2019 Audi RS5 Sportback Test Drive (The All-Weather Sports Sedan)

  • To some, the Audi RS5 Sportback is a consolation prize for not getting the RS4 Avant in the states. To others, it's a usable five-door rocket sled for all weather. The Drive's Mike Spinelli took the RS5 Sportback on a rainy-day test drive in the Catskills to check it out.

These can be amazing cars if optioned carefully.
Starting with visuals the Black Optics package is amazing for $1500.
The Carbon package seems like a waste at $5500 (4k more) just for a carbon lip and spoiler.
I would personally skip the upgraded leather and go for the Alcantara. It stays cooler in the summer and doesn't get hard in the winter and I've had it on both of my S4's with no regrets.
The next option really would be the Assistance package... It adds a small amount of weight and I've had it cut in on my B9 S4 several times that almost lead to 5 separate crashes, even when being extremely attentive. Radar cruise (when it doesn't drop anchor at 65mph for no reason) is nice, though.
A sport exhaust and adjustable suspension seems reasonable for $3350. I don't consider $20 worth of red paint on the brakes a feature.
Skip the carbon ceramic brakes unless you really need the 174 MPH top speed.
100% add the B&O sound system for $995
Skip the dynamic steering for better, more consistent feedback.
Skip the heated steering wheel because it's more slippery, is round (as opposed to flat-bottom) and is a generic wheel from the A4.
AudiCare for a thousand bucks... Hmm... Audi gives you one free service at 1 year/10k.
You'd have to bring it to them 4 additional times, each being $250 on average to make it back.
My B9 S4 (which does AudiCare but it was $500) averages $120 services (covered) and I can't imagine the RS5 costs twice as much (?).
Audi no longer covers tire rotation with AudiCare and instead nickle-and-dime $30 for the service (the $120 includes $30 for a rotation).
Audi used to cover an entire brake set replacement which made it a no-brainer on my 2014 B8.5 S4 @$800.
They no longer explicitly cover brakes other than inspections.
Also having to go through 5 total services means buying it with a lease is a waste of money.
So I'm at $80,995 with the Dynamic package or $81,345 with the driver assistance... $84,695 with both.
So that's a full 15-20 grand less than the model shown with minimal compromises. I think this is a MUCH better car at 81k than it is at 100k.

It's awesome where you're from you get to have all these options to select and cut back from, here in Aus we tend to get slapped with the premium models with everything included as standard apart from the obvious carbon options or ceramics. That's why cars here are so damn expensive, we're just forced to pay for all the options.

    • @Lucas-kj5kv
      @Lucas-kj5kv 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@benfl9636 Mainly its just because of protectionism.
Up until this decade, Australia had a domestic car production industry, despite being far too small a market to economically sustain one. To keep it going, as well as direct subsidies to Ford, GM and Toyota (the three foreign-owned domestic automakers), the government imposed hefty import tariffs and restrictions.
One of the most significant was an almost-total ban on second-hand car imports, which means that Australians are reliant on domestic second-hand cars rather than being able to import from other major right-hand-drive markets like the UK and Japan. Another important one is the hefty luxury car tax - 33% on cars worth over about $75,000.
Now that the domestic car production industry has (rightly) closed, there is no purpose whatsoever to these measures, but they still keep going due to a combination of inertia and vested interests in the car dealing industry.

Spot on review. As an RS5 Sportback owner I would suggest getting a base car on the 19” wheels (better ride and lower unsprung weight). Dynamic package is the only must have option. The B&O does not sound that great and the different appearance packages are a waste of money IMO. You can have one for under $80k versus $90k+ like this one. Yes the C63 is a few tics quicker and the M3 is a bit sharper, but neither is as practical or comfortable, and RS5 has AWD so it is a no-brainer if you live where where it snows.

Make a car that's this fun for 40 grand and I'll be impressed, otherwise fuck off I'll but a certified with like 10k on the clock.

I strongly disagree with "Dynamic mode"! It's still feels pretty soft (mushy) in that mode. Please don't complain about a mode that some may prefer. I wish they would add an "R" mode. This is supposed to be a "performance car", but you mentioned keeping it under the limits to be enjoyable. Well, the suspension is a lot of it. You can't control the weight unless the suspension is fairly stiff. Roll bars, shocks, and springs can only do so much when its tuned for comfort.

The QV would not cope well. If you live in a warm climate get the QV. The RS5 is solid well built luxury cruiser that can be a sports car when you want it. Think Classical music with side of classic rock. The QV is a rough demon that is always on high alert. Think death metal guitar solo.
If you want drift around a racetrack then get the QV. If you want to drive in the real world in all weather get the Audi.

That's correct like most other cars from any brand they brake in some way or another. Honda and Toyota are not excluded. I bet many of cars problems are user fault.
AUDI/VW at this point have nailed down the V6 and 4CIL, and maybe most of the DSGs in terms of reliability .
There's the DQ200 7DSG dry clutch /mechatronic fiasco, which I have in my A3 (8v), and I am fixing myself becuase dealers want 1.5k usd to change mechatronic and another for 1usd for clutch. I am not happy about this but besides that at arround 70kmiles has been awesome its a 2013 A3 (8v gen) and looks and drives easily like a new A3.

FiatDuster common misconception if you look at the numbers for desirable German cars from say 90-2014 they lose their value at a fine rate and sometimes go up only really luxurious models like say a 7 series bmw will lose value fast due to aging technology and lost comfort in comparison to new cars. M3s and rs4s and s4s retain their value do to the desirable motors decent reliability on some models and the refined feel of German sports cars. They don’t lose what made them special(the v8 in a small sedan in the s4 or rs4s case)
