    Composing a study like this must be like writing a piece of music or a poem - you keep going over it and over it until all the rough edges are worn away and true beauty emerges.

    Was curious so I plugged this into current Stockfish. It took it >2 minutes on my 8-core computer realize this position wasn't draw-ish! I think it's incredible that we can get a crisp explanation in 14 minutes of a position that the strongest chess program spends over a trillion clock cycles to solve.

      it turns out in positions like this stockfish 11 (classical) finds the solution quicker and it doesnt have nnue and benefits from the faster search speed. Still on a 16 core processer takes over a minute

    • @hector9586
      @hector9586 3 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      That's the difference a more experienced player, they will take hours to just solve it, without looking at hints, usually puzzles you never move anything until you solve it, it's the whole point of puzzles it helps calculation, visualization and sometimes tactics refinement. If you are doing puzzles pick something above your level and do not move until you find the solution.

    • @Tzesar
      @Tzesar 3 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      the thing is you prolly wont ever solve the real difficult ones and even easier ones are prolly on GM level. but thats not the idea behind those composed studies. the idea is to get more creative and fill your brain with those unusual patterns so you get used to find more creative ways to play and find tactics even in the most dry wastelands of endgames . you want to take 5-20 mins on each study and then check the solution

    • @hector9586
      @hector9586 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Forgot to mention, when doing critical lines, combine your ideas and then calculate it, you might see a pawn move before the queen, or viceversa, puzzles like these are really hard to do and will take you hours, even days but having hints kinda ruins it.

    Interesting fact: Stockfish (in lichess) finds the solution. But when I change the initial position with the black pawn in a4 instead of a5 (which leads to a forced checkmate in 12 instead of 13), Stockfish doesn't find the solution until I show it the move Bc7.

    • @tahabhar173
      @tahabhar173 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very intersesting ! but i think with those types of studies, classical chess engines won't find the solution unless the pgn of the solution of that particular study is pasted or coded within the engine. So I think the engine was just taught the solution with the pawn on a5. It's like the very famous study that Tal solved (Plaskett's Puzzle).

      @@hellopleychess3190 it's too specific. I want a guide to studying chess itself. right now it really feels like there's nothing i can do to improve and chess is just too complex for me to learn without a some kind of guide. Right now, it's like asking me to become an engineer without ever going to school. There's loads of books and videos I can easily access for free... but as an average person, can I really utilize these things well at all on my own? I need someone who has already gone through it to help me get through it. otherwise ill be spending like 5 years just to get to 1500 elo while someone else who had actual guidance might get way further in exponentially shorter.
      I'm not excessively passionate about chess to become amazing at it, nor am I a genius who lacks the need for certain types of practice. I don't pick up on complex things without a good way to learn them.
      And i'm not saying that i'm searching for some get good quick type thing as it doesn't exist, but what i am looking for is some kind of path, and it really doesn't feel like there's a single youtube channel that has one, so i guess me next option is to start looking at books and hoping they aren't as useless as these videos in setting principles for improvement rather than whatever this is

    Hey this is the best chess video I have seen. I do not think that chess studies necessarily follow your rule about what constitutes a study, but with your train of logic in mind I feel I have gained knowledge to assess studies which is an invaluable grain of mind to have added to my thought process. I can see how saying studies should follow one conclusive pattern of logic is inherently valuable.
    I do not know how to justify this appreciation further but suffice it to say I feel like a good critique has been spelled out for me to a great degree and I like that. You have provided me a concrete thinking skill I feel I can use for myself without your advice whatsoever that I wouldn't have come to myself nearly as quickly.
    Sincerely thank you! You have give me a very minor but improving and positive character quality as a person.

    • @austincarter6958
      @austincarter6958 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think what I mean to say is that I can see your questioning process here and how it finds results and i have learned from it and i appreciate that sincerely thanks.

    • @austincarter6958
      @austincarter6958 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also the game itself especially when you speed through it is kind of thought provoking
      Be5 looks like a straight up computer calculated brilliancy to me
      Like yes according to sound logic it is the only coherently forcing, winning move
      But is it an engine move? Did a human find it. It takes processing to figure this out for sure.not just to ascertain the answers to the questions, but also I feel like concluding that there is only the one correct move is a real win in and of itself. Depending on how much time is factored in a human could probably just intuitively play that, I would never in a million years though find I had just the right situation of king pawn and Bishop to wage an attention strategy of zugzwanging your opponent this is the work of sheer wizards to me.
      I have taken it for a purely human game but the players it sounds like are nobody's this could have been like stockfish leela maximum depth cheater vs like a strong GM for all I know, or stockfish vs leela, or two players from 1989 in an otherwise uneventful tournament. It is a good game.
      Like you need to go through 1 move justifications then 2 move justifications then 3
      This is a deep game dude I have thought about it a lot.

    • @austincarter6958
      @austincarter6958 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’m sure I’m being oblivious, but Danya didn’t cover it in the video - after Qd6+ Kg8 gxh7 Kh8 why isn’t Be7 winning?

    Great video (except for the title - a chess study isn't studying chess). Would love to see more content on compositions like this one.

    So another word? The very first solution, which is the best solution. You choose not to do, and you go through this alone, foolishness. Queen takes night, then Bishop moves. Bishop moves to make check. Take the quein come long-drawn-out. Scenario to make no sense.
