Coating a cake with royal icing (2nd layer)

Applying the second layer of royal icing on a rich fruit cake covered with marzipan

Can you crumb coat with whipped cream, and immediately put royal icing on as the first layer? This is for a Birthday Cake. Just want to know if it can work.

Sonia Joubert royal Icing and whipped cream do not work together. Royal Icing can’t be mixed with any cream based on water or fat that is the reason why cakes are firstly covered with Marzipan or fondant prior covering with royal icing
