Feeding 1.4 Billion: Inside China's largest dairy farm

  • According to the China Dairy Data Report released by the Dairy Association of China, from 1949 to 2018, China's total raw milk production increased from 220,000 tons to 31.77 million tons, posting a 145-fold increase. Milk and dairy product consumption quadrupled among urban residents from 1995 to 2010 and nearly increased sixfold among rural ones, making the country the fastest-growing market in milk consumption. About 100,000 mu (6,667 hectares) of alfalfa await this year's last harvest in Bengbu City, east China's Anhui Province. Known as the king of pastures, alfalfa is rich in nutrients and works as a good animal feed. #FarmingChina #PRC70 #70YearsThriving#

I’m a filmmaker who has spent a lot of time with the dairy farmers in central Pennsylvania, and wonder if Chinese dairy farmers are going through similar battles where they can’t make enough money to survive because 2% and 1% milk are being pushed harder, resulting in less local farms and more mass productions such as this one. I’ve learned so much over the past year and things are not looking good for the little guys :/

Considering more than 90% of China's population is lactose intolerant, do they add another step by adding lactase to break down the lactose sugars? Otherwise there will be a lot of toilet runs over there.
The lab tests done there are just to ensure the milk produced fulfill the mill standards criteria (mainly for milk factories).
There are other important tests for the farm side, to test for bacterial infection (especially mastitis) and ensure the cows are healthy.
At that huge scale operation, hopefully the antibiotics and drugs use is properly monitored by a qualified on-site veterinarian.

    • @jamesw4459
      @jamesw4459 ปีที่แล้ว

No, they don't. Having congenital lactose intolerance doesn't mean we can't drink milk. It's not an allergy. Most of the East Asian young generation have been drinking milk incessantly (partially forced by our parents and the government) since the late 80s (in Hong Kong and Japan since the 50s or earlier) so our body might have grown to be adjusted to lactose. (i. e. we retain the ability to produce SOME lactase after we wean because we continue to drink milk from a young age, even though we may not be born with it.) Even a large number of those who are lactose intolerant, are asymptomatic to only have mild symptoms, which means they don't really feel anything if they drink certain amount of milk.
The milk that adds lactase/breaks down lactose are called 舒化奶 and belongs to a different category. Its market is limited to elder population but even elderlies I know who had never drunk milk in their youth won't buy them. Chinese don't consider it "real milk". They are too sweet (due to the process of lactose broken into glucose) and people don't like it.
At the end of the day, we are only intolerant (actually, nowadays it should be "sensitive" rather than "intolerant" because we certainly can tolerate) to lactose, not milk itself. So the majority of us can still drink 500ml at one time and not feel anything. However, there are always some people who are more intolerant than others, so those who really, really can't drink milk (those who will "release gas" and those who will have "toilet runs" as you call it) will buy the above-mentioned lactose-free 舒化奶 or soy milk.
I am not sure about oversea Asian communities though. Because in Asian countries there have been governmental efforts and brainwashings to make the population able to drink milk. (Many kids who don't like the smell of milk are forced to drink it at school in school lunch or something. Parents are convinced that milk is super nutritious/healthy and will make us grow tall and strong so they feed us dairy in the diet, etc. etc.)
In short, if we really aren't able to drink milk, we wouldn't have invented milk tea.

Personally i think this is a disaster waiting to happen. Why will any govt approve such a gigantic dairy farm of over 30,000 cows all located in one place? Why not spread the farms in small numbers of 1,000 - 3,000 cows in different locations all over the city? Where is the large grass land area for them to roam, or are they going to be 'anchored down' in one place for the rest of their lives? What kind of 'healthy meat or milk' are you really going to get from this type of business model?
If an outbreak of viruses/animal livestock diseases were to occur here on this farm it will be very difficult to control. I am really sorry for those who think they will be eating 'wholesome' meat and milk products from this dairy farm.

Dairy farming is a subhuman industry. The treatment of cows and calves is horrendous. I do not know how people who are connected with the dairy industry sleep at night. They separate the baby from its mother to steal its milk, how do these people justify their actions. They provide a product which is not fit for human consumption in the first place. Milk is not meant for humans, it is meant for baby cows. Milk can have blood and pus in it. It is unhealthy, most of the world has lactose intolerance for a reason, because we are not suppose to consume it.

Pork, beef and mutton are basically breed by grains. With high grain production, these meat production will not be low. China's annual output of grain is the world's first, 650 million tons, while the United States is the world's second, 500 million tons. But China's population is more than four times that of the United States, its per capita grain production is about a quarter of that of the United States, So its meat is more expensive than that of the United States

The milk from cows grazing fresh grasses AND ALSO allowed to at least stay with and nurse their calves (milk sharing) is the best. Unfortunately, in the commercial world where profit is everything and animal rights are deemed lowest of low trash and hodgepodge (e.g. factory farming and dolphinariums), this is NEVER the case because calves are traumatically separated from their mothers with whom they have such a strong bond with and both mothers and calves alike are tortured until they are killed.

China is known for leap frog developed worlds in adopting new technologies. However, this video seems to suggest that in dairy production the country is fell behind those in Australia and US which push for regenerative agriculture or permculture.

Well china is historically a milk drinking country. So they dont have these kimd of industry. They are soy milk drinking country. Only recently they have promoted dairy products. So it's natural they are behind in modern dairy farms.
