Going to be my first trip down the yampa next week so just live watching videos of how people run stuff and we’re the big holes are out there to stay away from so right left right is the run

Have fun. Water levels should be fun next week. I would have pushed through the right lateral above Maytag with hindsight being 20/20.

Holy backstroke batman. Learn correct ferry angles, it will help you move around the river more efficiently. The rapid is Warm Springs, Maytag is the big hole you rowed into at the bottom.

I didn't want to get pushed into the meat (main current) waves leading up to Maytag, so I hugged the right side. My boat was heavy AF, so any set up took time to execute. In the future I'd push forward on that lateral before maytag. (lesson learned) I also had to pick up 2 kids and the wife on the beach below.

45 degree ferry angle. Backstrokes at 180 degree are not very efficient. Just not sure why you made the big move river left at the end which put you directly into the hole. You had the right line river right after the first hole. Plus ship your oars when getting out, they could hit something in the water and come out or get damaged. Cheers.

@@juanverde7444 yes I know how ferry angles work. I'm honestly not sure what happened after I got spun by the lateral. I wanted to spin the boat left to right but that couldn't work because of flow. I should have done a full 360 to get back in position to avoid maytag, but alas the river keeps flowing and I didn't flip. I couldn't get any purchase and wasn't expecting to get thrown so hard left. Again, I'd row forward on that if I did it again...I needed more momentum.

    I've rowed this many a time........classic.......
At that level, I'd go RDTM......right down the middle.

I'm always open to invites :-) It was my 1st time. I will be pushing the next time I row it.

@@Zachandersson One time I got sideways approaching that rock at the very bottom. One of my passengers was a very beautiful young woman in a red bikini........My final thought was " I can't flip the boat with Natasha on board". So I found the super human strength to straighten the raft out ........and went straight over the top of the rock (there was a four foot drop at that river level).
You did okay for a "first time"!!! ;)

Just another unwieldy bag of gas falling downstream.

@@Zachandersson there is nothing wrong with back ferrying but your angles were way off. And lose the oar rites, you will never learn to row using those things.

@@stephensmith5856 I’ll work on that this weekend in the North Platte. Thanks for the tips.
So are pins and clips a no-go too?

@@Zachandersson as you pointed out, I am a drift boat guy. So open locks for me. Your oars are your antennae into the water and I personally like to be able to feather the blades. Have you ever read "The Big Drops"? Warm Springs is a chapter in there and it is an excellent history of that drop.

@@stephensmith5856 yes I've read the book multiple times. It's a yearly read when applying for permits to get psyched up . I fully admit I was scared rowing this section of river. I lost my angle in the river, but thankfully kept the black side down. I'm always open to learning more...
