This is one of my favorite games as a kid. I played it to death; 100% completion. The music is so good. It's pretty easy to get this for an emulator today.
when i was a kid i stayed up for wat i think was about 35 hours playing this game at my grandmas (stuck on the part where you have to collect friends for end game fight?) or something like that. Mom picked me up to take me home but we stopped at Walgreens on the way. I remember being so braindead and half asleep that everything felt like a dream as I walked around. I remember this every time I hear the name Tomba. I never did beat the game, never could find all the characters that needed to be found.
Thanks to Tomba I found your channel ThorHighHels, and for that I'm grateful. Tomba is one of my favourite all-time video games. Thanks for giving it the love it deserves (l)
I like this game's graphical style. Like how the backgrounds look and how the sprites don't look out of place despite me not being into the character designs. I do remember seeing ads for this guy (and Grandia) in my Gran Turismo 2 strategy guide.
I must say, this is easily one of my all-time favourite videos of yours, even if I hold the game in a much higher regard (though I couldn't explain quite why as detailed as you have on just the level design alone). I think Tombi! - as we call it in the real world - is one of the forgotten pioneers of the PS1, the console that had a huge library of games that encouraged backtracking in some form or another. Were it not for its craziness, I'd find the amount of exploration to be perfect, whereas other games such as Spyro or Crash that had such mechanics failed to go very far with them. It's a game I find hard to give up on despite how incoherent it is and how many tasks you come across in a single screen, and you're expected to track them all mentally, but it has a charm that makes me want to solve it. It stops being a trial because you're always learning new stuff, even if that's only going to add to the list of stuff you need to remember. It's also a unique piece for nostalgia; because the game didn't have a publisher and the devs had to distribute the game themselves, few people managed to get their hands on a copy. The most some people have seen of it was from the demo, which is arguably one of the most in-demand PS1 demo discs in the collector's market. So that will definitely help. I could go on but you've other comments to read and more burps to record, so I'll end by saying good job again! You've warmed up this cold, dead husk of a heart. ^^
ThorHighHeels your pc98 and songs make me have that japanese-y thriller/jazzy itch, could you do a vídeo reccomending these kind of media, either movies, music, more games?
I swear I saw a live performance of the intro music from a jamaican street music team and realized the Beginning forest steel drum sections were sampled from a different song. I cant find any links anymore and Its driving me craaaazyyy
You know what... I like that you use dark souls music right before mentioning dark souls. It's kind of like you prepped our minds for the conversation. I'm sure I've thought deeper on that than I should have, but it's a nice touch. Great video as always. Always wanted to play the Tomba games.
Very interesting game! certainly one of those games that if you only look at the cover art , you would most likely skip it. I really appreciated how the level design is connected, just like dark souls (loved the addition of the firelink shrine theme). I particularly consider this kind of design one of the best options if not the best, everything makes sense, you really feel like you can literally walk around the world, buuut as you said, some times it may fail in the sense that the world most of the time will feel like it was made to fit for you character and his limitations, ending up breaking the immersion.
I played Tomba long after it release on PSP and had a blast. The only game that gave me kinda same expirience of adventury metroidvania in wierd world is Wuppo on steam
I really love this game, but I would not believe that anyone would finish it for the first time without looking up in guides or walkthroughs. Either that or random luck with guessing. Cause this game is extremely unobvious in all ways. Ways to solve quests are not obvious, places to find quests are not obvious, places where bosses are hiding are extremely not obvious. So all you have to do is walk around the huge-ass world just hoping that you might bump into something new or useful. It's a huge problem for me cause I don't like not knowing what I'm doing. It might be far or difficult but I want to know what exactly this quest involves. I don't say this problem is common in the entire game, but most quests in mid-game make no sense in terms of how you were supposed to guess it. I can give examples if someone thinks I'm just being overdramatic. And it's a big deal for me cause I find this game unique and nicely done in terms of controls, music and gameplay.
Yeah I agree. My old review went into this primarily. It starts off fine, but by the time you need to look for the pig bags & doors the game becomes really tedious. Even with fast travel options, there's still a lot of those "how was I supposed to know that!?" moments.
This one of the 1st games evert that really made u pay attention to detail. I thought I was going to play a simple 2d side scroller n beat it in a couple hours oh helllllllll no wasn’t happening lol only other game had this effect on me was Brave Fencer Musachi
I hated this game at 1st then came back to it giving it a bit more patience I learn to enjoy how creative & intuitive it was. It made you pay attention to detail. Yeah plenty of fetch quest & puzzles but once you solved them the world would change n more items made traveling even better. Wouldn’t mind s remaster of this game with cel shaded graphics
I was thinking of Rome Total War for some reason and went "nah fuck that lol" in my head but I will probably cover this game at some point. Capcom jumping through hoops trying to hopelessly pander to western audiences will never not be entertaining to me.
This game is so good. But secretly evil. It lures you in and then at some point, you will look at a walktrough. All those fetch quests, my god they will eat your soul. You will just run to the last boss and leave with an empty incomplete feeling forever. And then some asshole makes a youtube video and you want to jump back in only remembering the good parts and comfiness. To be fair, this game could have been a metroidvania classic but it just gets way too big.
I agree completely. It get's super tedious near the end, even if you have plenty of fast travel options. I go into that in my OG review a bunch, but forgot to highlight why I actually liked this game in the first place lol. So that's pretty much why I made this.

I wish this game got more recognition
What about Tomba 2? Aka "I'd prefer it if you'd just be quiet".
Thanks to Tomba I found your channel ThorHighHels, and for that I'm grateful. Tomba is one of my favourite all-time video games. Thanks for giving it the love it deserves (l)
One of my top ten favourite games of all times, i played it when i was like 14
Going through your older stuff. I'm surprised how it missed it.
And I gotta play this.
Yes!!! Tomba!!!! Love this hidden gem
I remember when this came out and playing it at the store and being blown away
I like this game's graphical style. Like how the backgrounds look and how the sprites don't look out of place despite me not being into the character designs. I do remember seeing ads for this guy (and Grandia) in my Gran Turismo 2 strategy guide.

Interesting. I had a burnt CD of this game, and never owned a legit copy. Don't think I've ever seen one either now that I think about it :\
I absolutely love Tomba. Thank you for making this video!
Beautiful as always! You gotta have that Dali village theme, amazing
I love FF9's soundtrack so much dude.
ThorHighHeels your pc98 and songs make me have that japanese-y thriller/jazzy itch, could you do a vídeo reccomending these kind of media, either movies, music, more games?
Why is the opening cinematic for Tomba so well animated???
Pig magic?
Because it’s from Japan :D

Huh, didn't know this game had metroidvania and RPG elements to it. I might just download this on my Vita now.
I love Tombi! Never finished it though 😅

This looks super familiar, maybe I played this when I was a toddler? I don't know
Maybe I did, but I don't remember getting far
I played this game so many times when I was a kid, I really enojyed it.
The blood stains were on point
Every time there is a new Sexy Stages video, I become the happiest of boys. Thank you.

Wuppo is giving Paper Mario vibes. I kinda wanna check it out.
