For the skills part "you have to change what you are doing"; for the relationship part "you almost have to change who you are". Briiliant! Horses are so incredibly intuitive unless they have shut off parts in order to survive; opening back up is like watching a flower bloom. So exciting to learn about all this and see horse people who are way smarter than I explain how to create the space needed. Big sigh of appreciation. Thank you for sharing your journey.
Just imagine if we'd be able to assess people like that (relaxed, anxious, shut down) and know how to interacting with them... how much more beautiful the world would be. Beautiful video as always. Thank you.
You can. The thing about psychology is it is applicable to most creatures. Let's say you walk into your local bar and you see someone you don't know. They're alone and look a little anxious and out of place. You can typically glean a few things: 1) They're new to the bar. 2) They might be new to the town (just moved). 3) They're meeting a friend(s) and are early. Now let's say a half hour passes and they're still alone. Chances are now: 1) They're new to the bar. 2) They're new to the town. So maybe you leave and visit again a week later. That person is there again. And they're still alone and still looking a bit anxious. Chances are now: 1) They're new to town. You then have total power to go up to them and introduce yourself, say you've seen them around and maybe try to start a conversation. Now, the question is really: Would you? Chances are you wouldn't. Most people won't. Instead of considering something as simple as, "Oh I haven't seen that person around. They must be new to town.", most people will assume, "Oh that person is alone. They must be weird."
Ended up learning some of this stuff from my horse during "outside the box" rehab. Once I realized that I was just going to make him comfortable and he was never going to be rideable...This kind of magic started to happen. He should be dead, but he can walk, trot and canter...Plus knows his yoga poses. I did not know that anyone was exploring this type of connection and am excited to have found your videos.
Warwick is my favorite of the sorry for the nomenclature, "natural horsemen". I have spent time at Monty's farm in CA and Dennis's farm in CA and watched tons of videos on youtube but once I found Warwick, I tell all of my horsey friends about his videos. Granted, I learn from every horseman and trainer I have been lucky enough to meet or train under! Thank you, Warwick, for breaking down the 3 types of horses and your video recommendations! My current show horse is an extremely well trained and capable show horse. Some days he is perfect, and some days I want to turn him into dog meat!!!! He has, what we refer to, ADHD. We go along the show ring or doing a pattern, and everything is perfect until he sees or hears something that startles him. Thank the heavens he does not bolt! But, he breaks his gait and brings his haunches away from the scare or he sidesteps and ends up in the middle of the ring or way off pattern. I think he is the 3rd type of horse and I plan to do the groundwork with him this winter to try to solve these issues once and for all. Thank you, thank you, thank you for everything you give most generously to us on youtube!!!!
I once tried to feed this horse a carrot and he pricked his ears forward while extending his neck, but also rocking his weight back and taking a step back at the exact same time. Horse is very special to me and we keep in contact with the owners incase they ever sell him.
I see an evolution in how you go about things over the years which is very similar to what I saw in Klaus Hempfling years ago, only you keep on explaining things in a very clear and logic way, where as he a kind of lost the connection with the people he was trying to teach about horses in the process of getting more and more connected with the horses themselves. I like your way so much better (y) .

I totally took notes. I'm going to write that Lau Tzu quote on a plaque and hang it on my wall to remind myself to live in the present. I'm going to work more on the relationship/relaxation part with my horse. Thank you so much, I needed to hear this today. Not just for working with my horse, but for myself.

having trouble finding the videos specified.... my previous horse came shut down, my current rescue doesn't seem to fall into any of the categories ....he is very personable, interested and willing but does have some baggage that appears as flinging his tongue around but he wants very much to connect.
I have a question about this, what if you are 100% sure that your horse is not scared of something and you have let her “say no” a few times, but they are just not wanting to do something? (Like being really stubborn) my mare is like that with the vet or dentist for example, but also in a lot of little things.

Arabiansarelife - I adore Arabians too. My lovely boy was quite scary when I first tried to lunge him, then I discovered Warwick, and his amazing vids. My advice is to work on connection, done even ask for anything but their attention, then take things slowly.

She is 3 years old and super confident from what I can tell, not scared of anything, very curios, and even if she does get nervous calms down very quickly. She likes attention, being groomed, being touched everywhere. She seems quite unsensitive to pressure and tends to run people over. She is very smart and respectful during the "circle exercise", so yielding her hind quarters and moving her shoulders away, but I cannot get her to hook on and it's probably not the case, but it seems like she just doesn't care. She seems comfortable running around on her own and gets distracted by everything. I have hooked on other horses and never had a problem before. You put a lot of videos on youtube about anxious or nervous horses, are there videos about confident/distracted horses in your online library?
You mention the video "creating the tool of focus with a horse this is really wound up" in this video. I was unable to find it so could you tell me where to find it?
When I first started working with my horse her whole body would shiver. She wasn’t handled much before I got her. It was just so weird to see that. After I worked with her a bit the shivering stopped. Do you know why a horse would shiver like that?
My horse shivered twice after 2 separate traumatizing events. In one case, the door of the horse trailer busted open as we were going down the interstate, his one hind foot slipped out. It all ended well with no injuries but we ALL shivered and thanked God it didn't end in tragedy that time. The other time he put his head in a tight place, panicked when he realized he was stuck and ended up slicing his jawbone open. (There's only a tiny scar now) I think he was shivering from the pain that time.
She would just shiver when I had he tied. Who knows what happened to her before I got her. I know she wasn’t fed properly but I don’t know what else. She hasn’t shivered since I worked with her. She’s very affectionate and sweet.
