Thanks a lot for your lovely lesson, I have been learned about primary & secondary pumping in a chilled water system.

Nice discussion about wasted energy due to low return water temperature @51:40
also explaining chiller loading as a function of return water temperature for a given setpoint supply temperature is very good and illusturative

Then why bother with the common pipe? Take it out and take out the secondary pump, the system is always balanced?

Sun Shine I know it’s been a year since you post this but I think I might know the reason. This layout is usually used when you are coupling 2 or more heat or cooling sources to a system and it’s meant to promote optimum efficiency The primary loop is separate to the secondary loop and is designed for the primary flow rate to meet the secondary flow rate with the correct temperature demand on the flow in order to achieve a perfect return temperature so that the boiler flue temperature will condensate all while the boilers firming at half rate. The primary loop being utilised as a low temperature loss header that keeps the boiler operating efficiently. Hope that explains that

To main a minimum flow rate of chillers i.e in primary circuit ,what ever may be the demand in secondary flow ,assume the demand of secondary flow is much lesser than minimum flow of chiller ,but chiller has to work atleast at minimum flow rate ,so excess water will go into common pipe.and other reason is that to operate the two circuit differently
