I once heard photography described as "painting with light" and I think this is a pretty cool demonstration of that effect as you're making such drastic changes with each of your adjustments!
Awesome, thank you! The word Photography literally means 'drawing with light', which derives from the Greek photo, meaning light and graph, meaning to draw.
Your comment about learning to a master a light was spot on. Every time I watch a video, there is something I learn or need to be reminded about. My work is very sloppy and that shows in the results.
I feel like this can cover 50 percent of my lighting needs when it comes to portraiture. Peter thank you so much. Hope I can join one of your workshops the next time you're in the states.
Peter this was a 2 for 1 video. First was watching you work your magic with Meika and light. Then there were the wide shots. The images on the walls and the rabbit head appeared to be an audience watching the session. You said you “never stop playing” and that fun, relaxed vibe comes through in the videos. Thanks!
I just love Meika's confidence and determination, she is going places. Great video, I've learned a lot about lighting and all things photography from you and I am forever grateful, Happy Holidays
Really useful video. Those little changes making all that difference. I need to get back in the studio and try some of these. Great shots of Meika too. Thank you.
very good video. ive been really busy with family over the month leading up to Christmas and now afterwards and havent been able to play around with my gear. i hope to emulate some of this soon!
Terrific Tutorial Peter, very timely, I am playing with highly contrasty bw portraits and silhouettes. Meika has an incredibly intense gaze. Her eyes are stunningly powerful. I love her style!
Excellent demonstration and entertaining too. Typically I have avoided photographing people but that could change. I'm going with experimenting with what I saw here.
This video was amazing. I think I learned quite a bit in just 10 minutes. Absolutely stunning images. I personally loved the contrasty profile shots. Over the shoulder shots. And the last few you put up. But as always, they were all amazing. Weldone guys. 👏🏻
Once more a great hands on tutorial, using one photo shoot to illustrate how small details in position of light and/or model have very subtle or big creative consequences on the final aspect of the portrait of that lovely model. In theory the rules seem simple, but in their practical use they become a very complex mix and challenge to get to the optimal result. I LOVE your Art Work, your teaching and your very natural, respectful and most empathic interaction with your models Peter. A fan from Belgium.
Many thanks for this new backstage video. @M: Many thanks for sharing and for posing in this video . I'm very happy to know that you're successful. @P: Many thanks for demonstrating lighting when it comes from the side, that I think is my favorite one, because the silhouette, in vertical, is outlined a lot. I hope it’s not appropriate to say that my eyes are always tented to do vertical scanning. I (obviously) like a lot the cover image, and also the images at 2:02 and 2:10 with the eye like a drop of water.
Just the kind of stuff I want to work on when I get my studio setup next year. Simple, clear, relaxed paced instruction that is a joy to follow. Thanks, Peter ! P.S. Which studio light are you using here? Keep well. Ciao
love the cheeky thumbnail.. beautiful video! love all that edu! tis the art of modeling! ha! U hot that 1 ! Rembranty light! & the portrait artist is still living by those rules, Today! imagine! glad U said that! a total bomb shell aspect! super vid!
Beautiful and awesome set altogether. My favs were at 7m 54s (side view but slight back arch, head tilt back and yet turned toward cam), 8m 18s (first one with arms above head and leaning a bit), 8m 20s (arms up but a more alluring look on her face), 9m 38s (kind of near deceptively cute) and then topped by 10m 11s (another arms up and slight lean but this one is with the more "wild" hair). Loved what you did with the lighting and how quickly you were able to do so--although I still find some of that difficult it is at least highly understandable when I see people aptly demonstrating as they go along.
Great video and very very educational, your bag of tricks is bottomless hehehe. Off topic:] I was going through some old Normal magazines and found your work in Issue 8 23 th May 2016. A series called Nébuleuse with the famous make up artist Damien Laturaze (big fan) who did also the make up for Emily in Paris (even bigger fan) in 2020. BEAUTIFUL shots Peter, maybe you can show some of your older work cause I really enjoyed that. Anyways, thanks (double) for sharing !
Another great tutorial. Quick tip about the BW in green channel. Not sure if this works in C1 but in LR/ACR I experimented a bit. Started with the channel mixer in Photoshop (mono, 100%G, rest zero) and exported that as a LUT which I then based a new camera profile on. I THINK it is the same response in the RAW file but not sure since I have never used Phocus that much. Might be worth checking out though...
Hi Peter. Looking forward to attending your workshop in Sydney next year! I'm just trying to fit out my studio at the moment and wondering where you got your V flats from. I gather they are just thicker foam board but noticed they stand pretty well on their own unlike the thinner ones. Have you taped them together? I was considering just buying some cheap doors from bunnings, painting them and mounting on a roller frame but don't think they would be as versatile. Thanks!
Thanks heaps Callam, looking forward to it too. I got the foam boards from Foamex www.foamex.com.au/ and then painted one side black (with matte acrylic, not spray paint) and then taped them together
Meika is such a cutie and sweety. I really like your sessions with her❣And of course a great demonstration of your skills in lighting. Thx for sharing this with us!
have you considered shooting with a leica q2 monochrom or a m10 monochrom if you are aiming for black and white results or is the medium format a bigger advantage over a monochrome full frame sensor?
Gosh, I looked up the definition of cute and there was a picture of Meika! Her face is getting a bit more definition as she gets a bit older and it just blows me away. Anytime she wants to shoot in America have her call me!
I’ve learned so much from you Peter, enough to actually make a go of this, thank you! But I can’t afford your D2 at a couple thousand. Can I get away with a 400 watt alternative, like a Godox? - David

The amount of knowledge and tips you provide in a 10min video is brilliant! Worth every minute! :D

Sorry to repeat my self, again and again….you sir are a wizard, master of light
Thanks heaps
Amazing what one light can do.
For those of us with less space & lower budgets, can a smaller diffuser/different shape still get something similar?
Yes one light is the best. Smaller light will still do a similar effect but will just be a little more contrasty

no I don't want the same looking monochrome imageres as everyone else using licea monochrome, I have my own look
Great vid

Por que nunca haces las fotos en vertical? Por calidad de la lente en apaisado o cual es el motivo. Gracias
Porque mis ojos ven en paisaje y siempre puedo recortar una imagen de paisaje en vertical.

For my taste the light direction was from to low. The nose-shadow up or straight always irritates me. just my 2 cents. Respect to you Peter
