The "way better than anything on Game of Thrones" joke about an off-screen battle is even funnier now but also more tragic... Galavant's final battle was IMO better than the Inconvenient Evening on GoT where you couldn't see anything onscreen anyway.
Of course, there was a lot of representative institutions that existed in the middle ages that was swept away or atrophied with the rise of absolute monarchies. Emerging democracies looked to these old institutions for templates of how they should organize during the revolutions of the 18th and 19th centuries, rather than coming up with them whole cloth or looking solely to Ancient Rome or Athens. Though the representative democracy of the commons of course was always dominated by elites among the commoners as the song suggests. ;)

When it comes to Athenian democracy every citizen had a vote, depending on the era that would be every rich man able to buy his own armor (early hoplite era) or later on every man since they grew more crucial to row the triremes against the Persians and against Sparta. The caveat (not the poor ones) fits well with the early US where only landowning man could vote and matters were more often decided with direct voting. The US is a democratic republic and shares combines elements from both.

As much shade that gets thrown at them, and as imperfect as they were, they were very careful to work within the reality of their day but still build a foundation that could grow to encompass all of humanity. They even built in mechanisms to change the fundamental basis of government if necessary, while restraining authoritarianism on one hand, and the tyranny of the majority on the other. You don't blame a seed for not looking like the tree it will become, and you don't fault a tree for not being perfect as a seed.
