This is also super accurate, I’ve done both d1 college and the European route, both were good for me but both also had its own drawbacks. That being said, being in Europe was almost a totally different animal. It’s regarded differently to coaches and even if it’s a low division, Europe is taken more seriously. But take that with a grain of salt. I enjoyed both situations.
Hamid Babaali I was wondering, by what European level do you compare D1 college soccer? I live in the Netherlands and if you want to become a pro over here the chances are very small.
R TM I’ve personally played most recently in the Baltic’s with first and second division teams. Even there it’s really difficult to go pro. That being said it’s also really hard to play D1 college soccer. But even lower divisions like in Germany and whatnot are competitive,
The UPSL is huge for younger guys. To continue playing competitive after HS 5-10 years ago you HAD to go to college. My club team had 6-7 guys who didn’t want to go to school but accepting half ride scholarships to schools was the best thing to keep playing a competitive game. Now the UPSL is growing. Kids can work and continue to play or go to community college and not get too far into debt just to continue to play. The UPSL is cool. I hope to see that league grow
I'm amazed that people think they can come to Europe at 17 or 18 to become a pro. Most of the players over here have been in elite academy set-ups from before their teens. I had a trial with the Nottingham Forest academy aged 12 and got signed by the Sheffield United academy aged 14 and I was considered a late-comer. The academy system will expose players to a higher level of competition at a younger age than you would get in the US. It's hard to come over at 18 and catch up with 6 or 7 years of the kind of work that is going on in the pro academies here. I've definitely seen some player do it, but it's rare. A lot of the decent American and Canadian players I played with had quite an 'immature' game in comparison to European players - they were talented but I think the lack of elite competition and coaching made them think they were better than they actually were. Then they got England and found the level was a lot higher so they would have to adapt their game rapidly or be unable to compete - or in some cases, they just didn't have the technical level - the touch, the feel for the ball, the striking consistency. American players hardly ever lack work-rate and are usually some of the best conditioned athletes but my impression was that mentally they weren't developed enough. A European player is doing a lot more work in their head, body position, head swivelling to see team-mates, fast reactions, technique etc. I really think that if US players would develop more technically at a young age, the talent pool and sports culture in the US is enough to create a powerful football team.
Matt is spot on! That first decision of either going to college or overseas is probably the hardest thing to choose. Because both of them require big sacrifices. Hopefully once I graduate things will still progress in the right direction
Hey Matt for the continuous Q&A: have you spent a lot of time mastering the mental side of your game? Did you ever have problems with the mental side of the game in terms of confidence, consistency, or just enjoyment with the higher level you go?
@@nas1055 nobody but yourself. I used to know nothing about the game. I spent hours watching Barcelona and real Madrid and breaking down film. Now I've gotten a couple offers from different teams. You either want it or you dony
the first thing you should have is enjoyment and fulfilment when playing. Once you have that down, everything will come naturally, just make sure that you enjoy playing first. The higher you go, the more difficult it becomes no doubt. However, if you enjoy it every aspect of the game, you will unconciously become better.
That's an interesting question. It's something that doesn't receive anywhere near enough attention. I remember joining the academy set-up at Sheffield United in England. I actually played in the same youth side as the current captain. I found there was quite a culture of bullying and hazing even as a young teenager - 13/14 and to be honest some of the coaches really damaged my confidence. I remember one of my coaches saying to me 'You came in here as a 10/10, now you're a 3/10.' At the time that really destroyed my confidence and my love for the game. It's only now that I'm a teacher myself that I realise the level of stupidity of that particular coach. If a student comes into my class on a grade A and he drops to a grade D, what does that say about me as a teacher? I saw a few of my team-mates go on to have pro careers and to be honest, I think virtually all of them had confidence issues that came from being judged, critiqued and hazed too harshly at a young age. I wonder how many of them might have had even better careers had they been able to play with full-confidence. It's such a fine-line between people understanding that they need to up their game to a new level and having their confidence damaged.
I played up to reserves for an EPL team then came back to the US for the youth national team and stayed for college. College route is way more difficult because you have less time to train, and the quality of coaching just isn't there. When I was 16, I was on par with the internationals for the u18 teams in Europe, my teammates were all called up to their respective countries as was I for the US. I didn't get an ounce better mentally/tactically in college, I still progressed physically and skill wise but after graduation I denied attending the combine and entered the workforce. In Europe i would train with the reserves and be around the first team, in college we were the first team, we had no one to model ourselves after. We all peaked; some went to the MLS, but college killed our development... We even had a Herman Trophy finalist deny the MLS, it just wasn't worth it. If you get the opportunity, go to Europe and never look back, but be ready to deal with major depression and home sickness, i was desperate to come home.
Well said. There's a huge gap between pro level in Europa and US high school. It's even bigger than the gap between being a pro club academy player in Europa. The step from European academy team to the pro team is big. You need a lot of skills and luck because there are many guy out there chasing this few pro spots... If you aren't already training in their youth teams at the age of 14/15 you are probably not that interesting to pro clubs anymore because you missed to many opportunities of high level competition to prove yourself in the battle... I've seen this happening to many great youth players here in Germany with my own eyes...
This is not meant to be a negative post. As a coach it is always annoying to see an attacking player not accept playing Fullback on the higher levels. I am really happy you decided to discuss this concept Matt. I was in the exact same situation last year and actually made the decision to come here to Europe because of my EU passport and solid connections, but it took a lot of deep thinking and discussions with people that support me. I am now here in Italy and am very happy with my decision. It’s also worth noting, though, that you can come to Europe for a year and see how things go and be careful to not sign a contract with a full salary to use it as a gap year to go back to college afterwards. That is looking like what my path will be, but I actually just uploaded a full day in the life vlog if you are interested in learning more about what it is like for me here in Europe! Here it is: th-cam.com/video/6xNACH9SPSI/w-d-xo.html Matt, I love the content, as I always do.
Hi man me and my brother played second tier in Turkey for over ten years We are moving to USA I was wondering how can we get start to coaching we both have UEFA lA diplomas
Matt, I got cut from the high school team this year. I joined a different sport entirely to try and gain strength, speed, endurance, etc. I don’t have the time to play for a club atm as I’m taking difficult classes in high school. What do you recommend for me to do on the weekdays and weekends so I can still improve my skills on the ball. How do I try to fit that in.
Lol imagine getting cut from high school and preceding to stop playing soccer altogether in order to “improve”. You need to play club in order to get anywhere in soccer; and if you truly cared about your development in the sport, you make it work with your school schedule.
You need to make it work with high school. Wake up earlier or stay later to train and train harder. Play the sport, either in pick ups, 7v7 teams or with friends. If you got cut, then you got cut for a reason. Look at the players that play your position, you need to put work them and be better but don’t stop playing the sport
Tommy Eris hey blockhead, I didn’t say that I ‘quit’ for another sport. I merely said I joined it for the year at my school because they do a lot of running and weightlifting which will help my physical aspect of the game. I appreciate the advice, but before you try to give some ‘constructive’ criticism, get a grasp of the message first. Think if it’s an appropriate response to what the question is. Nevertheless, thanks
i lovd ur vids and i wish if u could make make more adive vides ciuse i wanna be a pro and i now i am good enough but i need more adive for the extra bosst
To become a pro abroad what would you say is better try to play in a semi pro or 2 league here in the u.s. but you dont know yet if you could get to those stages or playing college
Is taking a gap year the best choice for those players that don't have college offers and didn't have a great senior year, soccer wise. Or should they go to to college and try out as a walk-on. I personally am taking a year off and working to save up for school and working to get better at soccer.
I swear to god I was just searching for a video about this yesterday and couldn’t find an answer, I’m also at the same situation but I’m kind of lost between going US or Europe to make my dream come true . Hopefully now I can make a better decision
What if you play abroad first and then when you’re 20-22 you realize that abroad isn’t working too well. Can you then go back to the US be a walk on into a college and compete in the draft? At that age is it possible to go attend college for the first time?
The problem is that I've never played over in the UK, so I don't really have experience about the system over there to give advice about. I give advice, suggestions, and create videos around what I know and have experienced.
Hey mate, what is it like at college? I’m living in Australia and might have the opportunity to go over soon, I’m a good student and know a good bit about my football, what’s the social life like? Is there more to it than just study and football?
Hey Matt, I’m in a difficult situation right now. I have a connection in Europe and my family can financially afford the expenses, but I feel like I’m not at that level of play. When I contacted my connection over in Europe, they said I should go over there and develop there with their academies for an year then try to go pro rather than taking the college route for development because I’m already 17 and cannot afford to lose another 4 years. Please suggest something. Would be really helpful.
Both. You can do both because the NPSL/USL2 season is during the offseason of collegiate soccer. I played with USL2 teams during my junior and senior seasons at college.
Become Elite That would have worked in recent years past, but now it's a little bit tougher of a decision since NPSL will be having a spring season starting early 2020
I was just wondering I'm from Ireland and I'm 16, I play a good standard of semi-pro football here, the problem is I know no academy's in Ireland or England won't sign me, do you think going over to the states to play NCAA Div 1 Soccer when I'm finished High School here in Ireland is a good Idea and will it help me get noticed by professional clubs here in America? 👍🏻

@@luciushunt2882 well I have been on two Academy teams in the past and I just joined a new one. I've played in the Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Association, for my local High School league on varsity, and the Super Y league.
Highschool is ok just make sure to have your highlights recorded.
I want to be a pro soccer player and that’s all I focus on but your saying I should go to college to go pro which is what I thought u should do so u can get into the mls draft then get scouted to epl from there
Thanks for the setup appreciate the videos and the content you do I want to go pro but I want to play in my home country mexico but if europe came up I would go
How many mls drafted players play in usl? How does mls draft work
Kevin Ramacha same
Bro your so awesome
Hi Matt, When you were at collage, how did you get recognition and grow contacts?
Thanks Matt. Keep up the great work.
Thanks for suggesting OPSM. Their combines are very important for Canada.
Here it is: th-cam.com/video/6xNACH9SPSI/w-d-xo.html
Matt, I love the content, as I always do.
Hi man me and my brother played second tier in Turkey for over ten years We are moving to USA I was wondering how can we get start to coaching we both have UEFA lA diplomas
Can u do a video about injury prevention for muscles strains in muscle like quadricep and hamstrings etc. And what to do if we get those injuries?
hey Matt, quick question - how did you save up money to go abroad when you left college, and what are ways that I can use to get money to go abroad?
Connar Mackay yo bro i just posted a video on how I’m playing semi-professional at age 16 check it out if you interested 🕺
Most college athletes picked an easy major like communications
now when im watching this video is almost 1 year what heppend with him @¿'?
Go on you are the best
Have you ever met Tobin Heath? Saw providence park and thought of her
I'm totally discouraged
Is taking a gap year the best choice for those players that don't have college offers and didn't have a great senior year, soccer wise. Or should they go to to college and try out as a walk-on. I personally am taking a year off and working to save up for school and working to get better at soccer.
I swear to god I was just searching for a video about this yesterday and couldn’t find an answer, I’m also at the same situation but I’m kind of lost between going US or Europe to make my dream come true . Hopefully now I can make a better decision
What are you going to do ?
Me too I'm lost
Yo, number 1
Hey Matt, quick question, how do you deal with “bad” individual training sessions?
How can a high school student build connection? It would really help me out.... gr8 video btw 👍
Wow i didn’t know you were here
What is your biggest recent soccer related regret and based on that what advice would you give us?
Chicky Black yo bro i just posted a video on how I’m playing semi-professional at age 16 check it out if you interested 🕺
What if you play abroad first and then when you’re 20-22 you realize that abroad isn’t working too well. Can you then go back to the US be a walk on into a college and compete in the draft? At that age is it possible to go attend college for the first time?
Gianmarco Coletta yo bro i just posted a video on how I’m playing semi-professional at age 16 check it out if you interested 🕺
Hey how can you bring your soccer level if you drop and not near your real level
Hi Matt could you try and make a video for English based players. As The system is a bit different here in the uk.
The problem is that I've never played over in the UK, so I don't really have experience about the system over there to give advice about. I give advice, suggestions, and create videos around what I know and have experienced.
Can't you just go on trial for the youth teams at your local club?
Become Elite ok that’s understandable. Keep up the great content Matt, your truly an inspiration 💙
How old are you? Coz i might be able to help a lil
A D I’m 16, just finishing my last year of school.
What was the most important decision in ur life and best game played professionally
Hey matt , how can make it professional as a footballer in college level , with no connection.
Hey mate, what is it like at college? I’m living in Australia and might have the opportunity to go over soon, I’m a good student and know a good bit about my football, what’s the social life like? Is there more to it than just study and football?
YO bro you so inspiring thank you for all your advice you made me wanna start my own channel like you any tips on any thing ?
Hey Matt, I’m in a difficult situation right now. I have a connection in Europe and my family can financially afford the expenses, but I feel like I’m not at that level of play. When I contacted my connection over in Europe, they said I should go over there and develop there with their academies for an year then try to go pro rather than taking the college route for development because I’m already 17 and cannot afford to lose another 4 years. Please suggest something. Would be really helpful.
I’ve fall into the last bracket so I’m wondering that how can I join a league 2 team while be in college?
Where is Allen now? 2yrs later? Would love to know.
Hey Matt what about other countries like Mexico and central counties would that be a good idea on trying to go pro ?
Mauricio Hernandez yo bro i just posted a video on how I’m playing semi-professional at age 16 check it out if you interested 🕺
Can i play abroad without an EU passport? because I'm indian and i dont have an EU passport can u please answer this question.
Matt how do you prepare for a trial?
Are you guys forgetting about south america
true
Do you know any exercises for players in striker position or wing position, and if u have any could u show them?
For a young (18-20) wanting to go pro, would you recommend college or NPSL/USL2?
JDS yea that’s a good idea not only that but you’ll get a good education in college as well
It's a good idea but if you can try to enter trials for academies/teams. That will get you farther than d1
Lol that was decent alright Spanish Matt. Do more 😃
Hey Matt do you know if USL and college are at the same level or one is higher than the other
USL is higher. It’s Pro
