Fergie was right; it would be ridiculous to put a slug against such fast paced pass game playing high on the pitch. Barça had an incredible possession gamestyle, and you needed to be fast. In today’s football, no top team would take such player. Good enough for small league games, but benched against top european teams with high intensity and fast transitions

I will never forget him at United, Guy was a magician. lazy or not, an absolute wonderful player. He also contributed massively to my obsession with Bulgaria 😂. Magic Man will always be a legend.

People who call these players, not just in football, but in any walk of life, lazy, just don't understand the thought that goes into it. It's intelligence not laziness.

At Leverkusen and Tottenham nobody called him 'lazy'. He was simply known as the "Best player on the field" there.
If the fans or the media called him lazy when he was at Tottenham, there's no way in the world Manchester United would have signed him.
The 'lazy' tag came from fans that compared him to Ronaldo and Tevez who looked like motorbikes on the field, which was not a fair comparison because of the different styles.
Berba was was an ARTIST. He painted the most beautiful picture on the pitch and made playing as a FORWARD majestic,easy on the eyes, ART in motion. Like him or hate him BERBA will leave you saying WHOA! Berba the "beautiful" Assasin of football. The "James Bond" of Football. Gotta love the guy.
Zidane, Bergkamp and Berbatov are the greatest football artists to grace the game. Played with elegance and grace, they dont make them like this anymore.

Him alongside Van Nistelrooy at RM are the 2 only strikers i've see who can literally just walk casually on the pitch for an entire game and then the ball just "magically" ends up where they are standing, they hit it and score. Its MINDBLOWING. I remember watching Dimitar play in ManU and he'd just walk around while Rooney would kill himself running and chasing and then the ball would jjust pop infront of him after a series of bounces and he'd score. He was so calm and collected, scanned his surroundings very well. Excellent positioning, ball control and lots of flair. Dribbled perfectly with lots of tricks and flicks. Very good vision and passing ability.
He made everything looked easy…I remembered him playing for Spurs where he received a long ball pass, brought the ball down, tie his hair and carried on with the ball. What a legend.🔴

One of the greatest?? Outscored Everyone??? What? Only once he did score twenty goals in the Premier League, which is a very good record, but not outstanding at all. If you look at his whole career, he was just a good forward. Nothing bigger. Perhaps it was his laziness that prevented him from becoming a top player.

Actually if you watch his highlights for Bayer Leverkusen, he is everywhere. It's as time went on he became a lot more efficient in his play, and let's not forget he was Manchester United's top scorer one season.

I've a soft spot for Berba, but 11 of his 20 goals that season came in 3 games. He wasn't outputting enough week in week out for a team like United (at the time).

I started watching football around 2008-2009 and he is one of the effortlessly talented players I have ever seen. Just an exceptional talent.
Berbatov was the most fluid player I've ever seen didn't require speed, power or strength he was just ever present...

As an Arsenal fan, I was obviously, to put it kindly, aggrieved at the teams this man chose. As a fan of football and the glorious physical artistry potentially encapsulated inside it, I loved watching this chap play the game to his tune. I considered him Dimitar the Scimitar. Cutting so cleanly through the cluttered minds of others on the pitch.
Berba was class. Those seasons in Tottenham (06-08) were truly remarkable and his 10-11 season in United was just phenomenal even though he was again underutilized, finishing joint top scorer in the PL (half of Tevez' goals being from penalties but Berbatov's were from play). It was very unfortunate that Ronaldo was jealous of Berba's talent and he was the main man so Berba had to wait for Ronaldo to leave to get his time to shine. But then SAF got hung on a few bad performances (one comes to mind vs. City where he missed 2 times on an empty post) and that's the reason he left him out of the CL Final. SAF had a weird obsession with Owen & Chicharito - good players in their own right but nowhere near the class & elegance of Dimitar. Truth is he never quite got the chance to shine in United, just the playstyle of the team was quite different. It still puzzles me why Feguson broke the bank for Berba just to underutilize him. Almost like he just wanted to have him so rival clubs wouldn't. Remember that a lot of United fans were critisizing heavily on Berba and constantly calling him useless, lazy & a flop. Had many arguments with them but to this day there's a large portion of the United fanbase that never truly understood and appreciated Berba...he deserved better than the treatment he got in United. On top of that playing for a small country, trying to carry a national team that was below his level, constantly met with hate & envy at every corner. Misunderstood Genius if there ever was one on the football pitch.
Ferguson preferred rough football and British players. Ferguson was also very ignorant despite his managerial skills. The arrogance at Man Utd is pretty obvious. Welbeck even had sometimes the nod over Berbatov. It's ridiculous because Berbatov is by far Man Utd's best striker but got treated the worst by fans, teammates and staff. Ferguson was spiteful towards Berbatov I don't know even why he bought him considering how he always licked up players like Rooney, Ronaldo and Tevez who are all egoists and selfish on the pitch. Berbatov had the most amazing teamwork. Always creating chances for others or for himself. Something we won't see in today's age especially not with how Man Utd is doing right now yikes. Berbatov was much happier at Tottenham & Bayern Leverkusen he was loved, admired and appreciated to the maximum which he deserved at Old Trafford but didn't receive. Berbatov was like Nistelrooy plus Inzaghi put together in terms of excellence as a pure striker. Played like a magician either as a playmaking attacking midfielder or as a central forward. Absolute talent.
@Sigurjon96 Interesting, I thought only fellow Bulgarians thought this way as obviously we were a bit biased. In terms of other strikers - Rooney wasn't that selfish. But you could clearly see Tevez, Rinaldo, Nani & Anderson attitude towards Berbatov - blatantly not passing the ball to him when he was in good positions. Think he had a good understanding with Evra, Scholes, Giggs, Carrick, Park and perhaps Valencia. But he was playing as a supporting striker, not finisher most of the time which is obviously not his preferred role. He wasn't as clinical as Nistelroy but he brought so much more in terms of playmaking. Tottenham and Leverkusen the team was built around him, he was the main man. United he had to adapt his play to the team, not the other way around.

Even though Fergie was a serial winner, he has his downfall every now and then. You can't help but noticed, he likes his team solid and fast and most importantly aggressive. Although, one thing that's always causes him trouble. The artist of football. He never had his way against ball playing teams. Never learned to use one either. Henry, Messi & Co, once the City team got luxurious players like Silva and Nasri, Fergie can't cope. Even Mourinho played with artist and spanked Fergie. Remember the days when Deco used to run Chelsea's midfield. Unbeatable.
Deco was post Mourinho, he came under Scolari. He was largely a bit part player, very much past it at Chelsea in spite of being a wonderful player at Barca
He is a traditional manager who relies on strengths of each player as a team without asking them to be the artists, a solid collective team, somewhat reminds me of what Manchester City have become under Guardiola today. No artist, just a manager with his pawns. However, for strangest reasons, some of them volunteered to becomes ones (Remember CR7, Beckham, or even Cantona?). However, not everything would have gone well without the artist. 2003/2004 when Arsenal won it, for example.

Pep just needed rigidity at certain area of his team and certain area of the pitch. Fergie is in love with CR7 because he was his artist that he never had after Cantona. Becks was just a normal midfielder, just very efficient. As much as people praises Scholes and Giggs, but they are nothing special just a solid team player.

Always thought his career was underwhelming and could have been at least top 5 striker of all time, I don't think we will see a player of his height with such technique and skillset for generations.
Also he definitely wasn't sluggish, lazy perhaps but with the ball he was quick witted and could escape tight areas with his touch and flair.

His first touch is the best I've ever seen, his composure intimidated opponents, there's no other player past or present in his mould, beautiful to watch! Fergie was a brilliant manager, but he failed to create a system that would have gotten the best out of him, HOWEVER, he had Rooney, Tevez and Ronaldo in the ranks, all in their prime, he was drowning in talent. He was always a special player, his "kind" is always have a place in any football fans. Van Basten, Zidane, Baggio, Ronaldinho, Ozil, and many more. But sadly, the last part of the video is right. He was born a decade late. But even in his time, which is somehow not supposed to be a time for a player like him to stand out, he was still stood out. Remembered for being elegant, graceful and beautiful.

Yes, so he was. He was just walking through defences and shots uncatchable artistic goals or plays a perfectly timed pass which ends in a 100% goal. Never seen a so calmed football magician with a so precise shooting accuracy again. He places the ball exactly where it had the highest percentage of going in without that any keeper couldn't do anything more just watching the goal.^^ He was definitely the most unique player so far.^^

However i feel like there are a couple of missed opportunities in this video.
His career for the national team of Bulgaria was also noteworthy. After all he repeated the most goals ever scored for the Bulgarian national team. The only reason the record wasn't broken is that he retired from the national team in the peak of his career over disagreements with the way the national team and the Bulgarian Football Union (BFS in Bulgarian) were managed. After Berbatov retired, he tried running for the BFS presidency, but lost the vote marginally after some serious doubts of proceedural manipulations. As far as i know there is still an ongoing case in the Bulgarian court about what happened in that election.
As a Bulgarian I see Berbatov as someone who has continued his personal struggle with the mafia. Except this time it's the mafia in Bulgarian football. I mean look at our results. They have been abysmal for years and yet the president of BFS just refuses to leave. He has been in office since 2005, yet Bulgaria hasn't qualified in any international tournament since...2004. A very secure job position for somebody so unsuccessful. Really, there's no trace left of the golden generation of 94 and Berbatov was perhaps the last truly great Bulgarian football player, along with Stilliyan Petrov (who deserves a video of his own) and Martin Petrov.
I know you will laugh really hard but before he becomed a perennial meme, Valeri Bojinov was a really good prospect. I was to little during the bright period of his career but from i've read and heard there were big expectanions for him. Sorry for my english. This one hurt me. I always loved this player and could not understand why he was not getting playing time. He had that Zidane grace but was a little lacking on pace. Irrespective, way faster than an Ozil with more zeal and skill (pardon my rhyming). This lad was a genius!

Berbatov was never lazy, he was one of the best strikers ever. He gets disrespected by fans ("critics" like this one), teammates and coaches but he was magical on the pitch. Such a great striker. He had good work ethic and was fast people underestimate him all the time out of spite. One of the most talented and skillful players ever.
I do think people are envious of his gifts, but they should remember the first part of the video about countless keep ups

Anytime I played Fifa in 2000 I always started with weaker teams to promote them, Berba was always my first buy.

As a fellow Bulgarian who grew up watching him at Spurs and then United it makes me feel very, very proud... then sadness hits me, as the future of Bulgarian football doesn't seem too bright and we might not get to witness such a player emerge from Bulgaria any time soon..
Hopefully he’ll eventually be in charge and help Bulgarian football … he’s helped a lot of kids through his foundation, including Grigor Dimitrov of all people, I believe he has good intentions but the old guys won’t let him do anything :(
We probably would have lost the game anyway but tbh we actually could have really used both Berbatov and Scholes in that final. We tried to play counter attack football and we jus couldnt keep the ball at all. Scholes came on and suddenly we looked alright but still could have done with a striker to help link the play. One of Fergies worst moments as manager imo.

Loved watching this guy. Even in little moments that lead to nothing you could see his creative genius and the sense of fun in his game.
He had an impeccable ball control and positioning. He was reading the game. The qualities a #9 should have. And he would’ve been more successful if the coach had built the game around him. Now we are looking at how Pep Guardiola incorporated Erling Haaland in City. It took an effort but now Haaland is at 51 goals for this seasons and counting. City is on a verge of winning a treble… That’s why Pep Guardiola is the best coach of our time. Because he knows how to polish a diamond when he sees one.

it's not unfair to say that Berbatov had the best first touch in the world. I remember him plucking Scholes' pings out of the air when Scholes was aiming at someone beyond him but Berbatov casually brought them down like it was a pass meant for him
