A band not mentioned is CCR. To this day people are shocked to learn they weren`t from the south. And I might be crazy, but I often get a strong southern rock vibe from British band Wishbone Ash. You`ve got the twin guitar attack, some good grooves, and I swear I hear a southern drawl in the vocals at times.
I remember a British band called Taurus form early 80s? They had a fantastic song called Paper Chaser that I would call southern metal. Never heard a thing from them after that.
Saw Blackfoot open for FogHat in I believe 1980 - great gig! Nugent, Grand Funk Railroad and BTO could all be on a Southern Rock festival billing and fit right in. Also, one of the Tesla member grew up in a family of bikers. Going 10 miles in any direction from Sacramento and you're in rural territory. Southern Rock was and is very popular there.
Black Oak Arkansas were a really good Southern band that had a few interesting albums and even the 2 cock Rock albums they did (X-Rated and Ain't Life Grand) were a Ton of Fun and Melodic Raunchy Riffs kind of VH before VH!
I always thought "southern rock" should've really been called "rural rock." Once you get out of any city and into the country, the vibe is often the same, and that's why it's so easy for bands from anywhere to pick up on. The blues is universal, it just takes slightly different tints based on location...
@@toddschulz2807 Agree! The album is a gem, really awesome A pity that it's the only one they released. I suppose Frank Hannon has been too busy with Tesla.
How do we feel about the Drive-By Truckers? They're more influenced by punk and alternative rock than metal, but the guitars are often pretty loud and southern fried at times. Plus, they literally released a record called Southern Rock Opera. Such a great, underrated band.
They stayed at my apartment twice that I shared with 2 other guys as they played in my town. We partied until dawn the first time. The second time I had the sense to find another place to sleep as I had to work the next day. Nice guys, those Truckers. Kid Congo Powers of the Cramps and Gun Club also crashed in our spot. Eric Bachmann of the Archers of Loaf stayed there too when he was doing Crooked Fingers.
Pete, I think it’s great how you promote your channel and how you help Martin Popoff promote his books. I have a video on my channel promoting Martin’s Album by Album series.
Corrosion of Conformity - Deliverance is one of my favourite albums of all time. Great pick! I always heard it in Entombed (Sweden) from Wolverine Blues on. It's still death metal (or death n roll as it was called) but it has a nice flair of southern rock mixed in there. Obviously, Nicke Andersson would go on to form Hellacopters and Lucifer later on, which showcased his love for southern rock. Also a few of the late 90's hardcore bands had it mixed in their style. Every Time I Die(Buffalo) and Vision of Disorder(Long Island) come to mind. Kvelertak, from Norway, also add the southern rock vibe to their brand of metal
I’d love to see Pete and Martin do an episode focusing on Motörhead in the 2000’s. I almost forgot how many great albums they released in their final years and they seem to get overlooked.
@@1848revolt I'll take COC any day over Down. Much better discography and different styles, Pepper's influence to COC made them southern sounding, plus he's the only member of Down from COC. Many of us like COC with Mike Dean singing when they were a punk/hardcore band better than the Pepper era, except Deliverance which is a classic.
One comment to add to the Zakk discussion is that he’s been throwing chicken pickin soloing licks since Ozzy. I know Ozzy is well documented telling him numerous times to cut back on it but you still hear it a bunch across those albums.
Martin, thanks for helping me remember the Four Horsmen, a great rock/metal band whose albums I purchased brand new back in the day and are long gone. I have to re purchase now! High energy band. Great show both of you guys.
How come no quick tribute to Gordon Lightfoot? I know he's not heavy metal but a popular music icon. Hell, he even wrote a song called, Sea of Tranquility.
Because I know nothing about Gordon and have never listened to his music. I only do tributes to musicians who have made an impact on me. I’m sure there are plenty of other people more qualified to talk about Gordon than me.
As for comedic rock bands, Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show had some great tunes such as Cover Of The Rolling Stone, Freakers Ball, Get My Rocks Off, etc.
When Pete was leading up to talking about Tesla I thought he was going to say Junkyard. Another California band from that “hair metal era” who had a lot of blues/southern rock influences
Yeah those P&G and Book of Shadows are both linked together in my head as I got them at the same time. If I absolutely had to pick, I’d say BOS is better. I also consider the first BLS album Sonic Brew as part of a trilogy with those 2 albums. I don’t think Zakk’s done anything as great as those albums since. He’s made several really good albums but nothing tops those 3.
Completely agree with Pete on Tesla. Alot of what you said about them having a southern feel probably has to do with singer Jeff Keith being from Arkansas. Surprised that wasnt mentioned
ENDLESS BOOGIE - formed in 1997 in Brooklyn, New York. They describe their music as a rock band as "Kraut Southern Rock". First two albums are choc full of southern rock rhythms and riffing. Jammin with Top Dollar another southern infused feast.
Bad Company,Free,Nazareth,Humble Pie? Great show guys.I had forgotten about Corrosion of Conformity.Listened to them on my bike ride today and enjoyed it quite a bit….Deliverance album.Great stuff.
Copperhead is another one. Think they only released one album on A&M or something around 1992. They were to Blackfoot what GVF is to Zep or Crown Lands to Rush, but still really good stuff.
Slightly off topic, Pete, thank you for NOT ranting about Maiden and Soundgarden getting snubbed. I think the RNRHOF does this because the negative reaction keeps people talking. Anything keeps them talking so best to not talk about it at all.
Exactly. You can't claim they're illegitimate and meaningless, while in the same breath, get reliably worked up on the day the indctees are announced. I always encourage Pete to ignore the whole thing, but he's a good guy and prone to giving into people with their lame requests for him to rant about it.
Totally agree with Tesla. The vocals, someone the guitar parts, slide, etc....you can definitely hear some southern influence in their music. Be a Man, Little Suzi, The Way That it Is, and others for sure have that southern bluesy sound to them.
