I never knew this at ALL until just recently when my deaf friend told me. She said his wife was deaf as well and he treated her horribly. Is that true?
Not at all. To the contrary, they were quite fond of each other. She even supported his views because he advocated that deaf people must not be secluded and should be assimilated into the abled world, which although was a damaging suggestion, it came from a good place and kindness of heart. Earlier deaf used to be institutionalised and not allowed to participate among the abled. In fact Mabel was the very proof against this kind of institutionalised treatment because her father refused to do that to her and Mabel infact learnt to speak by recognizing the patterns of oral movements of the mouth. Bell was wrong only in his longsightedness and not in his intention
