i did actually post an update pic on the facebook & instagram pages a few day ago but will do another video on it
Mate, I got to say your videos are much more interesting than other lawnies I'm following :) Solid content, keep it coming..
Cheers mate appreciate it
Can't wait to see it all filled in 👌
Thanks mate, I'll be tuning into your channel later tonight 🤟
You should change the name of the channel to The Aussie Lawn Nursery 😉. I really enjoy this aspect of your channel. Keep it up.
hahaha Yeah I love conducting little experiments and bringing you guys along for the ride
👍👍👍

Awesome tips for planting buffalo runners
Looking forward to see how this project go’s
🍻
Cheers mate hows life up north ?
@@theaussielawn
bloody Hot🔥
Pool water temperature averages around 33 degrees just from the sun.
Normally I turn off the irrigation from Janurary to July as we normally get plenty of rain during rainy season,
Have had a bit of the buffalo die off from heat stress so just giving the zoysia and buffalo a good drink every 2nd day
I’ll be trying the that shovel trick for planting runners as I’ve normally only just laid the runners down with a bit of sand but they always dry out and die
Thanks for the tip👍
All our rain must of ended up down south.
@@WOODZY_ Wow how good does that pool water sound. Yeah we have had all your rain thats for sure although tbh here in Scone we have missed out on the flooding stuff which is ok with me. Yeah try the runner trick it will be much more reliable than the way your doing it atm
Really interesting video and I've learnt something from it.Cant wait to see this thing spread.Good job!! I'm still a buffalo lover tho, love my lawn.
Cheers Den , I’ll do some updates once it gets moving a little
Eagerly awaiting your Durban Grass thoughts and tips! I've planted it out Durban years ago and it has worked well in my lawn in western Brisbane despite seasonal low light and shading. It has even overtaken some of the couch to be the alpha breed in my lawn.
Hi mate, Yeah I have a soft spot for it too. Mine has greened up now after winter and starting to look good. I had it at my old house and loved it. Its great lawn in the right area
Great tips for planting the runners. I've been spreading my buffalo by pulling up an old runners then using my edger to create a groove to plant them in.
that will work great too mate i like that tip
Great vid BK 😉 That Durban Grass is everywhere further up north. I thought it would only grow in tropical climates. Not down where you are. Keen to see how it goes 🙌🏼
Cheers Dan are you sure you're not getting confused with Nth Qld Buffalo Aka Broad leaf carpet grass?
@@theaussielawn I thought carpet grass was also called Durban Grass 🤨
Probably mixed it up 😅🤷🏼♂️
@@danielslawncare na mate totally different grass altogether 😎
@@theaussielawn Hmm, I’ve definitely mixed something up 🤣
Great video. Thanks
Glad you liked it!
Looking forward to seeing the progress over this autumn and upcoming spring. We are expected to get a wetter than usual autumn here on the east coast so that should help. The Santa Ana is looking absolutely insane! That 8mm cut length seems the sweet spot. Always looking forward greatly to your weekend vids mate! Cheers from Brissy
Cheers mate yeah I think 8-10 is ideal for Santa It will be interesting to see the sweet spot for tiftuf too Ill get a better idea on that by end of next summer
Looking forward to seeing the outcome/coverage of Durban grass. Honestly never heard of it before. Thanks for your experimenting. Hoping for another Zoysia update before winter:)
If you are on Instagram jump over to my page there I posted a little update yesterday but will do a green update soon
I am from South Africa and I have LM in my front and back yard. I have found that this grass loves loose sandy soil and I have to water it every day during the hot parts of summer. It doesn't need loads of water but still needs some. It also loves a little lawn dressing. It hates being cut short!
I had it at my old house and I missed having a decent amount of it hence why I'm growing another lawn of it again now, How common is it in ZA? Its very rare here but I reckon it has potential to become popular with a little exposure
@@theaussielawn It is becoming more popular by the day, here in ZA. It is way more popular in the north eastern part of the country, where it is actually from, but it is picking up here in the Cape too. Everybody that sees my lawn, wants an LM lawn. It is just so lushes en soft under foot. In the late spring and summer, mine will spread into bare areas at around a cm a day! I can't wait to see yours flourish!!
I have a patch of this growing. It's actually a really nice grass. I started off with just a little patch and it spread pretty nicely. It creates a really good coverage with nice fine leaves. Kind of a middle-ground between Kikuyu and Couch. I haven't had any weeds popping up in that area either because I think it smothers the ground underneath it which is also a plus.
Yeah it’s pretty good grass in the right situation, I actually suspect it may have a natural chemical defence like endophytes to help fight off competition from other grasses etc. i had it at my old house I loved it .
Hence the name sweet smother grass.
@@theaussielawn Might be worth pointing out from what I've discovered - Make sure your blades are sharp when cutting this stuff and use a bladed edger if possible. This stuff will bruise and stress really easily and is a bit delicate. I was doing the edging with the line trimmer until a couple weeks ago and the durban really didn't like that. Sure it can tolerate it, but it will leave stress patches. Swapping out the trimmer head to a bladed one did the trick. Rotary scissors would be perfect for this stuff.
Basically you just want a nice clean cut without whacking the grass around too much
Lol, I do that same technique with my kikuyu lawn in directing it where I want it coz since I brought my house the last owner didn't look after the lawn and I didn't want to seed it also I find it more rewarding watching it fill in from my efforts.
Yeah that’s how I grew my Durban lawn at my old house. My whole front yard was planted this way from stock I got from a mates cattle station in Qld they had acres of it in their homestead grounds
@@theaussielawn its a bit of a head ache but I find it more rewarding then seeding or roll-on lawn.
you had me at hypoallergenic. my daughter reacts to grass so this is great information 🤘
Oh sweet as mate glad to be of help
Can we get an update on this grass? :D
I will do an update vid in the next few weeks its already greener than the buffalo next to it now
Cool to see another grass type. New front yard is coming along! How is the green looking? Seems like we haven't seen it in a while.
Yeah greens doing ok had to give it a little scalp 2 days ago as it got away from me with all the wet weather etc I’ll do some updates on it and the zoysia trial soon 🤙
Great video - I'm replacing my Buffalo with Tiff Tuff so could I do something similar to this - poison, low mow and a level with sand, then lay the tiff tuff on the dead buffalo runners? Looking forward to your updates
Hey Ian, yup as per my reply on the facey page 🤙
Great video brenz
Any chance of a update?
There will be one soon mate
@@theaussielawn ok sweet
Cheers 🍻
haha 40g per square meter with the granular. your hands must have internal scales connected to your brain. haha do as i say not as i do. I like ya style mate 😂😂😂. p.s i rate the plant doctor granular mini prill i bought some with with your code the other day.
Yeah I was like why did I even say that 🤦🏼♂️ 😂
My hands know the weight of a mars bar 😂 felt the same
🤣 classic
Great video mate, Love seeing different grass species being grown! Where did you get your Durban grass? I don't think it is readily available in Australia yeah?
Durban grass has been around for a while but it’s hard to find. I actually had a whole front yard of it at my old house that I grew from runners I sourced from a mates cattle station in Qld they have it in there house yard. There are a few growers on the east coast that have it but they want a fortune for it.
@@theaussielawn ah yeah and I guess they prob wouldn't sell less than 50sqm of it also. Anyways some torrential rains for 2 weeks straight really helps couch spread and grow like crazy. Proves that really nothing helps grass grow better that rain and sun.
How’s the tiftuf looking at the end 👍👍👍
Its going really well isn't it. Thats why I wanted to get it short straight up cause I knew it would handle it fine
Can someone advise me if this lawn grows well under trees as I have had no luck with buffalo turf.
Yes it grows really well under trees, It needs to be left long (50mm + ) and doesn't like lots of foot traffic
@@theaussielawn do you give quotes on laying lawns in Sydney and lay them
Hi
Please explain why you would want to replace Buffalo grass with Durban grass
Because I'm not a huge buffalo fan and I enjoyed having Durban at my previous home
@@theaussielawn thanks
Is this new grass dog wee tolerant???
Hope so mate everything else here has been so far 😬
I live in the Durban area and we call it Berea grass after the Berea area in Durban. It is by far the most common grass because it comes from nowhere. I planted Cynodon and it was overrun with Berea. At this stage I should say that we have more than a handful of dogs. We had a small are designed for the dogs to wee at night and the pee killed the grass. Also it has above ground runners so if and when the dogs start digging they rip up a whole lot of grass making a great spot for grave digging. Berea has ‘rest time’ in winter so we end up with dirt patches all over the lawn. To have a good looking lawn requires constant watering which is not good in our water short country and do NOT cut it too short. In summary I would not recommend Berea/LM/Durban grass if you have a crowd of dogs
Cant wait to see how this goes looks like a weed currently🤣 as for max they are good at siting and shaking hands for a few years then they dont care anymore my boy Odins 6years old now and has selective hearing now🤣🤣
Ohh nice you have a Rotty too? Max is entering the equivalent of the terrible 2's 😩🤦♂️
@@theaussielawn na odin is a staffy greyhound I think it's just a dog thing they all start getting selective hearing hes been told a few hundred times this year to stay out of the garden but yet still I find him siting in the sun in the garden...🙄

Haha on the ball today Chad 😜
Great video mate. Haven't seen Durban grass since i was last at the turf plots at Yallah tafe. Hope your having a great weekend.
Im glad to have a decent amount of it again. I had it as a front lawn at my old house yeah chill weekend for me hope you guys are well
