To this day, Zuko is still the best redemption story I have ever experienced in media. Its only flaw is that we don't get to spend more time with post-faceturn Zuko because he's only with the group for the last half of the last season. That and no Zuko-Toph episode

@@carlosdanielcalderonmontoy3723 Not a lot immediately come to mind, despite a lot of series trying to do it. As someone who has seen a bunch of anime, there are way more garbage """redemptions""" than good ones. Gun to my head, I'd say Dalinar from Stormlight Archive is a good one but that's different from Zuko where he starts as an antagonist and then becomes a good guy because with Dalinar we start as a good guy and then get shown the skeletons in his closet later.

Mm in anime/manga, there are actually some GREAT redemptions, Endeavor's redemption in Boku no Hero Academia is omg, amazing and fascinating, currently it is heading to its resolution. Hohenheim's redemption in Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood is BEAUTIFUL. Also, Hitotsubashi Nobu Nobu's redemption in Gintama is *great* as well. Oh, I had never thought about this one till today: Eva Heinemann's redemption in Monster, is a 10/10 as well. Naruto, has trash redemptions like Orochimaru's, Kabuto's, Obito's, but Zabuza's redemption is beautiful. Himura Kenshin's redemption in Rurouni Kenshin is just something else.
*And, the BEST redemption I have experienced, is on Vinland Saga.*
On Live Action series I can think of Jamie Lannister's redemption BUT that redemption was *totally ruined at the end, so no...* but Negan's redemption on TWD is so good.
I have read plenty of comics/graphic novels but I haven't found a redemption story yet. On videogames I can't remember any.
I am on page 311 of The Way of Kings so I don't know what's going on with Dalinar yet xD, and in books in general, I have only read The Silmarillion, Mistborn and Dune trilogy, I still have to read more.

So glad Merphy is doing Avatar! I especially love Aang's final dilemma - the conflict between (1) his personal values and what's good for his spiritual growth and (2) his duty as the avatar and what's good for the world. Wonder if she'll touch in this..

    • @Vanillastump
      @Vanillastump 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Tbh, Aang's final solution felt like an ass-pull to me. Energy bending could have been implied earlier. I feel like the last season was good, but rushed. Sokka MASTERS sword-fighting in 1 (maybe 2) days. Aang learns firebending, and a few episodes his firebending could stand up to Ozai. Azula's breakdown was a bit too fast too me. Plus, freaking everyone being a member of the White Lotus felt added on later. Piandao made it clear, but I don't remember Paku, Jeong Jeong or Bumi doing or saying anything involving the white lotus, or even Pai Sho. "We need more members of the White Lotus! Who are the oldest characters? Perfect."

Seeing someone pick this show up so long after it has been released, talking about it as their favorite show ever, is so satisfying. ATLA is definitely and objectively the best (completed) show that has ever been made. Seeing that it still lands with new audiences the same way it did all those years ago when it came out just re-affirms this point.
The first show I have ever watched that I thought might take the crown from ALTA is Arcane. It is only one season in, so it is hard to say whether or not the series will remain a contender throughout, much less end with taking the crown, but it has the potential so far. It has many of the same things that made ALTA stand above the rest; Complex characters and interpersonal relationships. The ability to weave every minute detail into the bigger picture. Masterful music and visuals to perfectly capture and enhance every story beat. Arcane season 1 is a cut above the rest and I really hope the complete story holds up to this incredibly high standard the way ALTA arguably not only held, but surpassed as the story progressed. I am definitely looking forward to what is in store.

Zuko needed to fail in his redemption arc in ba sing se to really understand what it is he truly wants. Finally having everything he worked so hard to get back after being banished made him realize how much he really didn’t want it & all those years away with Iroh showed him the good side of him that was there all along. His redemption arc is perfection. My favorite character aside from iroh ♥️

something incredible and unique is that the agni kai between azula and zuko doesnt feel triumphant. it feels tragic and sad. these two abused kids, so traumatized and hurt and influenced by their father that they ended up in this place where they never should have been. its the tragedy of azula, the climax of her unravelling. her mask breaks and all her scars are finally showing and its painful, your heart aches for the little girl that never got the chance to be happy. all she knows, all she was taught is anger and pain and it left her broken. its not a victory, its sad. zuko doesnt gloat over his victory, azula too in a way echoed the abuse his father gave him. instead of finally coming out on top and feeling satisfied, he pities her. he only fights to protect, not to perpetuate the cycle of abuse. i cant think of another show that would portray it like that and its so brilliant, i love it so much

Sanji and Zuko have the same backstory, of being a banished prince, despised by their father for having humanity and not accepting their inhumane ways,
who finds solace in their mother who both loses tragically leaving them feeling alone,
and it isn’t until they find a true father figure who teaches them everything they know, that they can finally be who they were meant to be.
    - as well both have “evil emotionless sisters” who are actually deeply affected by their upbringing. And consider themselves monsters.

Love avatar. It's still my favorite show to this day.
Is it crazy to say that zuko goes from a leading antagonist to the protagonist by the end of the show.
By s3 I'm rooting for him more than I am even rooting for aang.
In the day of black sun the most important and iconic part is his standoff with his father and him redirecting lightning.
In the series fanale the last agni kai between him and azula is a scene and fight I'm more exciting and emotionally attached to then aang vs ozai.
The last episode is titled: Sozens comit part 4: Avatar Aang.
I personally think it should be titled Firelord Zuko
As the episode really culminates in zukos coronation, and they say "All hail fire Lord Zuko"
Love the video, sorry for such a long comment. Don't have many people who I know who watched the show so nice to talk about it.

I just realized something about Katara that I did not see before. The strife and desire to become a greys master water-bender is so deeply connected with her Mom's sacrifice. Katara needs to learn water-bending, she has to become really really good at it because of her mom and because thatwvas the reason her mom died. Because of her bending, of that part of her. My perspective is that on a subconscious level she needs to excel in water-bending because her mom's sacrifice has to be worth it. I was kind of annoyed when she yelled at Aang for him being naturally better but I see it now with saddens because her emotion body tells her that she need to be really good really fast or her mom dying for her is for nothing. Or at lest this is something that I see, maybe I am streaming it a little. You guys can say ❤ PS Thanky Merphy for talking with such passion and love about the thing we are passionate about as well!

Just abt the only things that I can think of the Avatar crew could improve on the story is not having the episode great divide bc it ended up being kinda useless anyway. If they were going to have that episode make the conflict more nuanced instead of a petty conflict. At least make the story Aang makes up actually be true bc then it would be more in character with Aang.
The other thing is I like Aang’s final conflict I just think the solution could’ve come to him in a different way. It doesn’t really feel like he worked to find the Lion Turtle. Maybe if we saw more of his adventure or maybe he had gradually learned some abt the Lion Turtles then that could’ve helped the Lion Turtle giving him the answer feel more earned. I do like the answer he got it just kinda feels like it was more handed to him than earned.
Something else is that in the episode where they focus on a lot of character own side stories. The one with Aang wasn’t that great. I feel like they could’ve cut it or had it maybe be a more interesting or at least meaningful one at least to his character arc. His storyline isn’t a big issue of the show with this episode it just didn’t lead to much of any character development or anything. Also Aang’s dreams before their first attempt of fighting Ozai are fine but I think that plot line of Aang being stressed might’ve benefited from the dreams having a more serious tone. I understand showing that he’s stressed and scared which is good. It’s just the way they did it didn’t quite fit the tone of the dilemma especially with Zuko’s storyline in that episode being more interesting with figuring out the story. I get the dream plot line probably needed to stay funny bc it’s a kid show and it did at least lead to some funny memes.
This is something that’s really more a a nitpick. I just would’ve liked to see more chemistry with some of the end game couples. Aang and Katara did have moments together. There weren’t a lot of moments that it seemed Katara was into Aang. I feel like Zuko and Mei could’ve been developed more. I get Mei had a crush on Zuko since she was a kid and that’s cute. Most of the time we see them together they are either making out or arguing. I think that could’ve been developed more bc Zuko had more chemistry with both the earth kingdom girl and Katara

Bruh…. Aang’ s character journey gets downplayed so much, I think simply because there are so many brilliant characters, but like now as an adult rewatching this show aang’s journey and childish selfishness and love and empathy and all the little things that previously I saw as writing mistakes now make so much self to like flesh out this ‘child’ with so much pressure on his shoulders. It makes me so emotional cause at the end of the day this isn’t a story about the “Avatar” but a story about “The last airbender”.

The use of ‘hooking up’ is pretty sus. Honestiy, it made sense to me. I’m biased since I shipped the two since the first episode and there are way too many hints throughout the show that they care for each other but it’s a great symbolism to show the war is truly over. Katara said 4 prior episodes she’s unsure of her feelings because they’re in a war, symbolising how war can trouble even basic human features like love and now that the war is over, they can finally get together.

@@joeyjerry1586 To me Katara seemed like she was just trying to let him down easy, and while there some implications of Katara liking Aang back they would then imply that she only sees him as a friend or a little brother, so it really just gave kid has a crush on his babysitter vibes.
I agree that the symbolism is great the execution however was definitely lacking especially considering that in the last half of season three Katara and Aang have a few conflicts that don't really get resolved on screen leaving them in a weird position for them to end up together.

@@joeyjerry1586 I totally agree with you with seeing that love for each other numerous times, but ultimatley I think they're realtionship was a sibling one rather than romantic. I mean, Aang fell in love initally bc she's the first beautiful girl he saw probably ever, and he literally woke up to her. It was a crush.
Katara, tho, treats him with almost motherly affection, like she does Sokka. She treats him 100% like a lil bro, and even, as @Isla Sullivan points out, often lets him down easy. The romantic nature of their love seems a bit pushed, just to have that iconic shipping. I think their endearment to one another is totally valid, but ultimately should end up platonic. Like, I wouldn't ship Toph and Sokka for the same reasons, and I think you'd agree, Tokka (or whatever ship name) is weird. Even tho she crushes hard on him, like Aang does Katara, both Sokka and Katara treat them like little siblings. The friendship is beautiful, and affection doesn't have to beget sexuality.
That's why they should've just left it at most implied, if not totally up to the watcher. That's a great common ground, I think.

    • @PaulPower4
      @PaulPower4 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I ended up liking it a lot to be honest, it was a bit eye-rolly early on but it was clear that they had a lot in common and cared for each other deeply, and it became fun to see the various will-they-won't-they teases. I can see the reasoning for a more platonic or familial relationship, but maybe with the war over Katara finally had a chance to not have to be everyone's mother all the time.
It felt weird to me that there was never a satisfying resolution to the whole "let go of your earthly attachments" thing (I was expecting... I dunno, really? Maybe Aang to never truly master the Avatar State? Maybe a moral about "if you love someone, let them go and see if they return of their own free will?") but not gonna lie, a key point of tension going into the finale for me was whether things would work out between them. Hell, I took some advice from the show and did my best to "clear my chakras" before starting to watch the finale so that I could accept that whatever happened, happened, because I was far too wound up about it to be healthy.

Avatar the Last Airbender feels real and Legend of Korra doesn't. In fact I don't remember much of Legend of Korra. I would re-watch episode of Avatar all the time as for Korra it was one time watch. Avatar had one main villain and that was Fire Lord Ozai. Korra had two many villain each different season and you never knew when they would show up. Avatar Aang found his masters became life friends with them and learned the spiritual side of bending. The Last Airbender end at Book 3 Fire called Avatar Aang completing everyone story arcs.
As for Korra she use the element like battery ram never truly learns on how to use the elements. In fact she is master of Water Earth and Fire by the time she goes to Air Temple Island. She never get to find her own masters and is forced to train with the Order of the White Lotus. By the end of season 1 Korra is a master Avatar by age of 16 without mastering the spiritual side. Legend of Korra ends in season 5 with major cliff hanger. This why Avatar the Last Airbender will always be the better show.

Korra was originally supposed to be 1 season. That's why season 1 is it's own self contained story and villian. Then it got picked up and they brainstormed a series, but it wasn't well done. The characters were one-note, Korra wasn't well-liked, they added lore that hurt AtLA, and overall it wasn't a cohesive message or epic.

I´d say that the one thing Avata TLA does lack a lot in is in the relationship department.
The only character with good romantic relationships is Sokka. Her romance with Yue is beautiful and he grows a lor throgh that relationship.
And his romance with Suki is honestly so cute and dorky that of course you cant help to like them.
BUT. The other relationships are trash. The creators tunnel visioned to much on the Aang-Katara ship that they wanted when they weren´t really a very good match.
And of course who could forget Zuko and Mei. That shit was so bad.

8:43 To be honest, Sokka always reminded me of Usopp. They are both talented strategists but they're also the least powerful people in their group, with no amazing super power. Because of that they tend to have an inferiority complex. But their devotion towards their friends and standing up to their enemies even if they're scared and outmatched is what makes them such complex and endearing characters.

If you like Sokka you can't really hate Usopp, imo. Yes, they are different characters of course, and Sokka is innately more courageous compared to Usopp at their beginnings, but they both try to be so brave, strong, etc falling short, and growing arrogant, irritable, insecure, etc bc of that. The only major difference is that Usopp is even more flawed, in that he can't really be brave at his start, or at least, it's a huge struggle to be, more so than Sokka. Which makes him even more relatable to me than Sokka, though I love them both.

I think Usopp has less of an ego than Sokka. In fact, he has a huge problem of self-confidence. He is a liar and while brave, he is weak. So he compensates by creating lies about himself. However he never believes them, even though he is sometimes better than what he thinks.
On the other hand, Sokka has more ego from the beginning, being the only warrior left in his tribe. His journey is more of humbling than becoming braver or stronger. He actually becomes stronger by rejecting his flawed vision of himself and opening his mind to the real world.
While both characters are funny and resourceful,I they play different roles in the story and the groups they belong.

    • @KaijuKes
      @KaijuKes 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I saw the similarities between these two during this video as well. There are a key few differences that negatively affected Usopp. He didn't have a Katara to mother him, he was completely alone. Not only alone family wise, but he didn't have the support of the village. He wasn't trusted to be a defender, he was looked down on for being the child of a pirate. Sokka was entrusted with the village. He has/had a loving father even if he left them. Sokka has the foundation of love and support, even if it was shaky due to the war. Usopp was left to find his own way all alone while being looked down upon by the village. It's no wonder he wanted attention and doesn't have the confidence to do anything. No one has ever had faith in him before (unless they were small children who are easily dismissed)

Also he is just funny and loves tea, a man after my own heart. Second favourte it Toph because despite being disabled, she is not weak, she is in fact the opposite. She is very strong and dependent on herself. She is so small and young and people see her as weak but she proves she is just the best. But also she does have weaknesses, like all of us.
When I watched Book 1 I enjoyed it. But in Book 2 we get introduced to Toph, have Zuko alone and Iroh's Tale and it made me go from liking the show to adoring it.

My personal favorite exchange in the whole show is the one where Azula says “I’m sorry it has to end this way, brother” and Zuko says “No you’re not”, and the actor reads it perfectly with just a touch of regret but total resolve.
And the reason I love that simple exchange is because if Azula really was the least bit sorry or sad, it wouldn’t be happening. If she was actually capable of that emotion, or of caring about her family, there wouldn’t be a fight.
The music during the fight is perfect to underscore it: this is not some noble epic duel for rulership of a nation, it is the death knell of a relationship that should be about love and support, but instead is about anger and selfishness.

    • @remo27

I think you forget something: "Let the family physician tend to little ZuZu..." in Azula's mind, Zuko isn't dead. She doesn't want him dead. She does care, in her own, twisted way. But that's the point: she never allows herself any emotional outlet. She's all rage or rationality. All the time. The only other emotion we ever see from her (aside from The Beach episode) is sadistic pleasure at other's suffering. Even her few laughs are cruel. The only halfway good thing she does is that she likes to pun. But in The Beach we do see there is another Azula. A socially awkward girl who can be jealous of her friends and has no clue at all about how to get others to like her. When she loses the two friends she sorta has, she becomes more isolated than ever. Add what she considers a betrayal by her father(literally the only person she looks up to) and then having her 'consolation prize' (being Firelord) snatched away from her at the last second, and its no wonder the poor thing has a mental breakdown.

Sokka's "helper"-complex is so interesting. Before he meets Aang, he's surrounded by children and old people - people who need protection. So his protector-ego is massively inflated and rightfully so. Then he meets Aang and EVERYTHING CHANGES. Now he's the weakest. The non-bender. And his ego takes hit after hit after hit.
So when he starts a relationshop with Suki, the only other non-bender to join Team Avatar (and a girl on top of that) of course his protector-complex kicks back in - and with full force too.
AND THEN in the last episode he literally has to save and protect TOPH of all people - motherf***ing Toph is the one person actually in need of his protection. AND MY MAN does he protect her. No wonder she falls for him.

ATLA is my favorite show of all time precisely because it’s an absolute masterclass in writing a series. A large chunk of that is owed to the characters (almost all of whom are impeccably written) and the world building, but the other aspect that stands out to me is how well the various plot threads tie into each other. Pretty much every twist you see over the back half of Book 3 is foreshadowed somewhere in a previous episode. It’s absolutely brilliant writing

Friendship consistently proves to be more powerful in securing victory and love and life than actual power.

    I love that you mentioned how Sokka learns to trust people and fight alongside them. One thing I really loved was the gradual evolution of his and Aang's relationship in this respect. At first, Sokka did not trust Aang whatsoever. Didn't trust him, saw him as a threat, thought he was childish and goofy, everything Sokka tried NOT to be... But over time they not only become friends, but also Sokka gains a lot of trust and respect for Aang. He sees that this "goofy kid" is an incredibly powerful bender and, what's more, a very good, genuine and surprisingly responsible person. He begins to trust him, deeply and completely. A great scene to illustrate just how much is when Zuko tries to join the group. When Aang asks the team what they think, Sokka doesn't trust Zuko - but he fully trusts Aang, and he basically says "hey, I trust you, if you think this is a good idea, then I'm with you." Just going from ep. 1 Sokka & Aang to this... melts my fricking heart ;-;

I would LOVE if you can do an analysis of Azula. She, in my opinion, is one of the best villians ever written. Desite being a truly evil person, her fall to madness at the end genuinely breaks my heart, every time. The fight between her and Zuko is one of the best scenes ever in the history if cinema/tv. Period.

One of my favorite things that doesn't get a lot of attention in discussion is Aang giving up a guaranteed victory against Ozai and risking his life to stop him without killing.
Whether or not you wanna debate how stupid the introduction was for energybending, it's so compelling to see a kid risk death to hold true to his nonviolent beliefs, especially when literally every single person around him is telling him to go for the throat.

It would've been cool if only _his_ life was at stake, but that wasn't the case. He was willing to put millions of innocent people at risk for his own beliefs/convictions, which is hardly commendable and is exactly why every Avatar advised him to kill.

@@thabokgwele5268 Or he saw a better way forward and it was worth the risk. He'd already fought Sozin for the entirety of the comet's power boost and the fleet was destroyed. If Ozai beat Aang, where would he have gone? He was in Earth Kingdom territory after they'd gotten control of their own city back, and after Aang had already beaten him in an extended fight.
But even if the risk was worse than that, finding a way forward without more bloodshed is worth it for everyone there. Zuko even said that they need to replace the Era of war and bloodshed with one of peace and kindness. Aang embodied that perfectly by finding a way to neutralize Ozai. Just like Zuko and Katara did with Azula.

@@Punkandcannonballer If you're absolutely sure that the Fire Nation still would've lost if Aang died, then I agree with you. Non-lethal force was the better option because it worked for everyone.

I understand your reflection of Toph. I had/have the same issues as someone with disabilities myself. Especially looking at acts of kindness as being looked down upon. It’s great to be reminded that this isn’t always the case. Love AtlA thank you for the videos!

I understand my ex more now, she identified and liked Toph a lot. She might have a genetic desease and is very self-sufficient/it's very important to her. The disability part I totally forgot, but it makes a lot of sense.

I think it’s worth mentioning the moment Zuko found out he’s also related to avatar Roku helped push for his redemption arc. It gave Zuko a clear view that he doesn’t have to choose the path set before his father. In fact, it was his father’s paradigm that burned his face just for speaking out of turn. It was the Avatar’s version of “I am your father” from Star Wars. And like Luke from Star Wars, Zuko is faced with a decision of which path he wants to follow, except this time he’s rejecting the ideals he thought he originally wanted and pursue the “light” instead.
