Exactly! There is something called conscience. But Indian Audience won't be able to accept it. They will somehow try to prove it wrong. Do u know why ?? There are many places where Men are degraded but no one will have the problem. The Biasness and Soft Corner towards Female which people have in their mind is very strong. That's the reason behind the anger and frustration of people towards the movie "Animal". U see, most of the people are going personal to stop people from watching the movie. This proves the anger which Vanga Sir has triggered in these people. And by looking at these Double Standard people, I feel, More and more this thing should happen. These people really need to be strong and mature.

30:00. I disagree that the audience is not mature. They know what theater experience should provide and what tv/ott can provide. Why would i spend 2k and watch "kadaisu vivasayi" in a theater when i can get the same experience in ott ? The stars understand this and hence only the kgf/ps/leo movies will be made for theater. An occasional por thozhil will become a hit in theater, but no way is this going to happen more, even if the movie is great. Good night, love today, kuzhangal, chitha can all be enjoyed in a 50 inch tv with family for a low cost. Hope now people understand why Kamal was pushing for dth in 2010 timeframe itself.

I don't agree with Mr. Rangan that moviemakers are completely exempt from social responsibility, and that the stories/characters should have no relevance outside of the film. Yes, freedom of expression is a right that should be protected; but obviously, that protection cannot and should not be extended to hate speech. If your movie is a barely disguised dogwhistle to sexists/racists and/or other antisocial elements, it deserves to be criticized as such.
If it's a dogwhistle, then the character won't be consistent to the world. Like plenty of "pious" heroes who casually revels in their sexism etc. and everyone around him eggs him on. Depends on the world, how characters react to them, etc.
Take Animal, regardless of what Vanga's intentions are, whatever the guy does is ultimately futile, his wife leaves him, he turns out to be progressively unhinged - except for his henchmen cousins and some enablers, nobody feels he's justified in doing what he does. His obsession/dad issues is comical, like nobody sees Ranbir pointing out how his dad holds his dick and thinks "wow, that's how you love your dad" - it's just creepy as heck.
But on the other hand, take other films where the hero gets it all, gets to give misogynistic/casteist lectures etc and be a "hero" and a "saviour" - we have had a gazillion films in this template. Here, there is no consistency to the world.
PS: Whether or not and how it influences society is a whole different debate, BTW.
@@sickleboi Thank you for a thoughtful response. I was triggered by Kabir Singh, and therefore haven't watched Animal. I do understand why you think "dog whistle" is the wrong term to use here. I use it because I've seen politicians employ "dog whistles" to awaken the worst instincts in people, by secretly validating their fascism/sexism/whatever, signaling in a way that gives them plausible deniability. Vanga is employing offensive fictional characters to stick a knife in all the women who found his previous movie objectionable. It's baiting, pure and simple; he sets a trap for "feminists", who will promptly be accused of "fake feminism" if they dare to criticize his movie; at the same time, it allows male audiences vicariously indulge in toxic masculine traits. Soon, you have (many) men enjoying the movie, and quickly dismissing genuine reactions of women. I truly believe the movie reinforces toxic masculine traits even while the moviemaker disingenuously protests his innocence(it looks like he employs background music in a way that glorifies problematic scenes - dog whistle?). I would have been content to simply detest the pro(?)taganists in his movies if I hadn't watched the director's interviews where he excuses relationship violence as "real passion", and (the one with BR) he avers that his "heroes" are not misogynists. The primary intent of this movie may have been feminist/critic-baiting, but the effect it's having - judging from all the men who are ridiculing women (including BR🙄)and dismissing genuine feelings as over-reaction - is that of a successful dog whistle.

15:47 ...I get your point there, but then my question is how r u differentiating a 'propoganda movie' made solely to establish a set of ideas on viewers and solely discarding every other views, Animal Being Character Driven 'Flawed Character Study' Is Understood In The 1st half But ....The Second Clearly Took A Detour From The Plot Of Revenge Drama To A Point Of Hammering The Critics Of The Filmmaker Based On His Earlier Films, It's His Vision Entirely But You Can't Trick A Viewer By Envisaging Numerous Rhetorical Views On Gender Jus Coz You Think It's Right, If Tht is Right, Then Why Complain Any Movie & Label It As A Propoganda Movie.
There's no absolute way - but some films are very obviously made for propaganda - like Kerala Story for eg. - nobody (except certain vested groups) in Kerala would even feel this bizzaro world is Kerala - and this is supposed to be a "based on a real story" - it's just a gaze of some people who have a vested interest or showing certain masses what they want to see and reinforce their perceptions.
If it's fiction - then it's a bit tricky, but for me it's whether the characters are consistent to the world. In case of Animal, felt Ranbir was consistent within that film and nobody sane would think that "wow what a guy" if he looks at what he does towards others and his wife and kids and his hilarious daddy issues. IDK and IDC what Vanga thinks of his character, I can only comment on what's shown on screen.
