    - I replaced the cable holding the handlebars by Dyneema rope with a sliding nut. There's a little bit of flex in the Dyneema which makes it very comfortable; less road bumps can be felt when steering.
    - Concerning your cleats: Have them adjusted by a bikefitter, and don't touch them afterwards. Moving them to the wrong position might give you room, but will lower your power output and might even cause you harm. I tested my Milan SL with ~130mm cranks. Feels like a children's bike but at least I can ride it with my size 50, hahaha. Stock is 155; I have 150mm in my GT.
    - The system with the visor: Pull left, pull right, pull left, pull right ;)
    - The little window in the hood is useful when in a heavy climb or when manoeuvering. It makes it possible to open the hood and still see a little bit right in front of you. Make sure you don't close the hood while the bars are still in the up position, as you might push out the window.
    - The elastic bands that hold the hood down is annoying to start with, but you get used to it really quick.
    - The steering on the Milan is veery relaxed, the most relaxed of all velomobiles. :-)
    - I can't compare to the Alpha7, but the DF XL accelerates much easier than the Milan. On flat road, the Milan GT is faster once at speed.

    Excellent video as always! I rode an earlier version of the Milan on the ROAM tour, and also thought it a bit tight. I'm a bit larger than you and don't think it would be good for longer rides. Mark who rode it on the tour, who is much closer to average size, seemed to be very happy with it. Evolution bikes is about 2300 miles from me, and currently is the only place I can test velos. Too bad you don't have a Katanga there, I would really like your opinion of it, since you're only nine cm shorter than me. I like the way it comes apart, for working on it.

    they need to be 2 - 3'' taller to allow a reasonable crank length like a 180 - 190mm , the front could taper down to more of a point aswel . I suspect they have guidelines on how pointy the front can be ,,unregulated you'd want it to taper to a fine point like a fighter jet

    • @TheVelomobileChannel
      @TheVelomobileChannel  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hello sir,
      I agree that short cranks may not fit to everyone. But I also have to remind you that you can’t directly compare upright bike crank lenght to recumbent crank lenght. The seating position and riding dynamics are completelly different. So the crank lenght you have on your upright bike might not be the most optimal for a recumbent. With recumbents you have to consider your knee angle and your hip angle. You don’t want your hip angle to get too small, it will feel uncomfortable. Also your knee angle should not be too small, it will hurt your knee. Shorter cranks will make your hip and knee angles larger. But too big angle (too short cranks) will have negative effect to your performance.
      Making the velomobile higher to allow longer cranks might actually make no sense at all. By making the body taller, you increase the frontal area which means more drag. Also the taller body will be heavier, and so will be the long cranks as well. So by using longer cranks you might get some extra torque, but that’s probably all you get. The taller velomobile body will be less efficient, and long cranks might hurt your knees.
      When using short cranks you can compensate the smaller torque by using smaller gears. Meaning you should optimize the gearing to your cranks. With shorter cranks your cadence tends to be higher, so that will compensate the slower speed of the smaller gearing.
      To find the optimal recumbent crank lenght for you, try this calculator: www.recumbents.com/wisil/misc/crank_angle.asp
      I’ve made a video about crank lengt earlier, explaining some of the things I’ve said here: th-cam.com/video/VBxNNH2XAZM/w-d-xo.html
      Fighter jets have sharp and pointy nose because they can travel supersonic speeds. But with velomobile speeds it’s little bit diffeent. Sharp and pointy nose will probably be the most efficient type of nose in wind tunnel testing. But in real world the wind is hardly ever blowing directly to front of the velomobile (0°). If the airflow is even few degrees off to one side, there will be turbulence ”behind” the sharp nose which will cause a lot of drag. Also riding that kind of velomobile with sharp and pointy nose in strong side wind might be pain in the ass. The wind would probably push it all over the place. Blunt nose is more efficient in real world conditions and easier to control, when the wind is never blowing directly (0°) from the front.
      Btw. Passenger airplanes don’t have sharp and pointy nose either 😉

      Thanks for such a detailed response you lads riding these recumbents are a good tech level always.
      i built my open wheel trike to exploit the leg press type seating position with 170mm cranks for strong low end acceleration /road legal go kart 😂 i'd definitely compromise an inch or two shell height for full length cranks i rarely exceed 30mph (roads mostly 30mph limit ) , i'm 5ft7 + 50kg with uk 7 feet size , i could still have a reasonably small shell with 170's. my legs are fast but weak i need the crank length 😂. Crank length is like engine displacement its worth more then gearing advantage if you have skinny whippet legs / a big rpm range but low torque.
      do a video where you set a 100meter sprint time literally nothing ever shows up in searches, i think a sub 15 sec should be possible. 👍🏻

      My guess is it is minimalist to save weight. Things like rubber clips, foam, wire and velcro are easy and cheap to obtain an replace. Owners of these machines tend to be handy with diy so these should be no problem for most. Keep it simple.

    Great review. Is it normal for velomobiles to have such short cranks? I’m running 175mm cranks on my road bike and wonder what it would feel like coming down to 145mm.

    • @TheVelomobileChannel
      @TheVelomobileChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Recumbents and velomobiles both benefit from shorter cranks. It’s easier for your knee and you are probably able to output little bit more power, because the knee angle doesn’t get too sharp. Also with short cranks your knee doesn’t rise so high in front of you which improves aerodynamics on open frame recumbents and also improves the view to the front of the bike. On velomobiles shorter cranks gives you more space inside the body, so that your feets or knees doesn’t hit the body.
      I’ve made a video explaining shorter cranks few years ago. You can find it on my channel.

    Hey Saukki - another great video! I have a question for you - what do you use for recording audio when you're in your velomobile? I'm really struggling to find a solution that has anything like usable quality. Thanks for any advice you can give on this, K.

    • @TheVelomobileChannel
      @TheVelomobileChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Lavalier mic close to your mouth and a audio recorder with manual input level control. I use my phone as a recorder and app which has hardware based input gain control. (Voice record pro -app). You have to manually set the input level so that your voice doesn’t clip. And because the mic is close to the audio source - your mouth, the velomobile noise won’t be so loud.

      It actually might just fit in a Mk7. But it's best to get a salesman to fit you into a Mk7 before you order. I know of a few riders that are at and even just over 190cm which ride in a Milan SL. Especially for shorter trips, it's not a bad idea - even with super tiny cranks the SL seems to be about 10% faster than my GT. If you fit comfortably, don't get a bike that's too big (unless you want to ride on the road with cars in NL, that is).
