I just bought a 550N on eBay, looking forward to trying it out. I bought it because the exterior design reminded me of my Penn 700 series from my teen years. I’ll probably snag (no pun intended )a Penn one of these days.

They were built to last...a reel tank (pun intended). Thanks for the comment!

A wonderful reel, honor it! And you're right, from this series 550 was the biggest, there were a 110, 220, 330, 440, 550 and also 221 and 331 with a higher gear ratio. This reel of yours would deserve an old high quality glas fibre rod 😉 I have a collection of old DAM Reels and fish with them more often than with any other reels I have. It's is just an undescribable feeling listening to the clacking of that anti reverse ... Caught many great fish with them 😉

Yes, very cool reels, I'm always on the look-out for nice vintage rods to pair with them. Very solid, well made reels. Thanks for commenting!!!

Actually the 270 Super from the late 50s was the biggest, it had the metal spool, where, to my understanding, the 550, have one of those, had the plastic spool. Both live up to the name, DAM Quick, or DAM Good as I refer to the quality of the things.

Oh wow thats an awesome looking reel
I love to look for old fishing gear , I search flea markets and yards sales
All the time for them I did a video a while back on a reel I found and cleaned up and used to fish , they seem to be of better quality than the plastic junk these days

They built them tough back then. There is a TH-cam channel where this model was 'pimped' by slotting the the rotor and powder coating it. One of these days when I get some free time I might attempt it.

I have three of these that I use for surf fishing. I put Gomexus Power Knobs on two of mine as one I bought with no knob which is why it was cheap. These reels are absolute tanks. The internal gearing is marine grade brass and stainless steel. These 270 Supers are popular reels for upgrading. I’ve seen several that were made completely sealed against water intrusion and dunking. Some even have new machined gearing and additional bearings to make them high speed. The reel is such a strong platform that it is perfect for upgrades. These reels can be a challenge to service as there are two rolled steel pins that have to be knocked out using a small pouch to enable disassembly. Getting them back in can also be a challenge. I wouldn’t want to throw lures all day with this reel because of its weight but it is perfect for using set rigs in the surf or pier fishing.

Yes they are tanks and great for beach/pier fishing. I plan to 'pimp' one some day. Cool reel for that. Thanks for commenting!

I just picked up a like new 440 for 5 bucks! Mine doesn’t click like yours though. Unless the 550s click.

You got a great deal! I have never used a 440 so I'm not familiar with the anti-reverse system on it.

Man. My Pop had 2 of those dam reels. They were copies of the Penn Greenies. I think he got his at Montgomery Wards. Bringing back the memories.

Absolutely, very good reel, turn the clicker off, little thing at base of the reel handle

😀 That little thing at base of reel is a real work of machine art. I have seen no other reel with the same level a design. It is a side turning lever with a ramp to engage/disengage the anti-reverse. And watching it move and click as you reel when it's engaged is pretty cool. Thanks for the comment.
