Mine just arrived. I ordered the 2060 with intentions of upgrading next year or something. That said, I am shocked at just how well it runs. Great fps, great thermals. No throttling at all. It benchmarks as well as the desktop version and even keeps up with more expensive 2080 max Q laptops. As crazy as it sounds, I consider the $2400 I spent for the 144hz, GSync monitir and 2060 a pretty good deal.

I also went for the 2060. I didn't have the money to splash on a top of the line laptop at this point, but needed to replace my Acer nVidia 710m laptop. I have an AMD build desktop as my main system, but need something portable for work, as well as other creativity tasks. Hopefully, I can upgrade in a year or two. Just need to wait for delivery!

I've had my Area 51m for almost a month now and i love it. i got the i9-9900k, RTX 2080, 32gb ram combo. i use it mostly like a desktop running an external Alienware ultrawide 34in 3440x1440 120hz G-sync monitor. i also use it to run a VR racing simulator setup with a Samsung odyssey VR headset and a steering wheel rig. it's a big upgrade from my old Alenware 17r2 laptop i was using to run the same sim racing setup that was bottle necked by the 5 year old CPU. i already have the Alienware graphics amplifier i was using with the old 17r2, so i can always stick a better graphics card in there in the future if i have to. or if future cards aren't available in the Dell GPU form factor. i'm stubborn and prefer laptops over desktops since i can use them to tune my car in the garage or on the front porch and other areas of the house. i probably could just keep using my old 17r2 to make tune changes on the car though. for me i didn't see the point in getting a non mobile desktop when this can do the job and be mobile, but i admit i probably won't want to take something this expensive when i travel either. lol.

I've been using Eurocom (Clevo) laptops for years. My current model is the Sky X4E2 with a 7700K that shipped with a GTX 1060 6GB card (I got the 330W power adapter rather than the standard 230 as I planned to OC and anticipated the possibility of upgrading the GPU in the future; I just really couldn't afford the 1070 at the time and didn't see much need for it at 1080p). After around 2 years I finally got to the point where I decided the time was right to upgrade the graphics now that games at 1080p are requiring more graphics horsepower (games like Assassin's Creed, Shadow of the Tomb Raider etc.) so I pulled the trigger on the GTX 1070 8GB card and I couldn't be happier. It's a night and day difference, overclocks well (I have yet to test the limits, but so far I've gotten a Fire Strike score of 16,571 for the system, 19,760 for the graphics with an OC of +124MHz on the core and +426MHz on the VRAM and I keep the CPU at a full 4.6GHz across all cores full-time and my temps top out around the low~mid 80'sC (it was lower with the 1060, but I used Kryonaut originally and when I did the upgrade I used IC Diamond 7; I've already ordered some Kryonaut paste from Amazon to re-do the CPU and GPU). The upgrade was fairly straightforward, just a few screws, a mini power cable, some thermal pads and the paste and the rig was ready to rock. I wish the industry would adopt MXM as a standard and actually maintain a single standard (i.e. the same design/pinout/power etc. for cross-device/cross-generation compatibility) and I'm sure that someday they will adopt some kind of standard, especially as GPUs and CPUs become more efficient/cooler and more and more gamers migrate to gaming laptops for the added portability/flexibility vs desktops. They've already done it with the CPUs now that you can get a desktop chip in a standard socket without the CPU being soldered on the board (my 7700K is even delidded), so I really do think it's only a matter of time before these OEMs say enough is enough and adopt a standard across the board to make upgrading these systems much easier, at least for the more powerful/high end desktop replacement gaming rigs (the thin and light models have obvious limitations that would prevent them from adopting such standards). I was hoping that with NVIDIA's dedication to the mobile market with Pascal, things would get better and it would translate to more options, more standards and more flexibility for high end laptops, but unfortunately with Turing they're back to the same old tune of 'no upgrades for you!' which is really unfortunate, because I'm certain I'm not the only one who would be willing to purchase a newer gen card for my laptop if that was an option, especially if the price was reasonable.

Cpu and gpu thermals more in depth would be nice. That’s the main issue with putting a desktop grade cpu and gpu inside a laptop. Kinda disappointed you guys didn’t point this out. That’s the main concern for potential buyers. I have a Helios 500 with 8750h. Running pubg for 4-5 hours my cpu temp only gets to around 70-72C @3.9ghz and gpu temp never passes 60C. Can you guys include some type of real life gaming scenario to see the the actual temperature?

They are, kinda. You have to know what you're doing, but it is possible to swap out the GPU, as many laptops use the same shape for the chip. CPU and RAM upgrades are the same as on a desktop.

11:00 that’s not true anymore. Some of the newer g-sync laptops let you disable it. The laptops never used a module like the desktops did. I think they could open up VRR for 144hz displays with a driver update, but they use it to let vendors have product segmentation.

    • @FakeGordonMahUng
      @FakeGordonMahUng 5 ปีที่แล้ว

the keyword is some. But very few do. I actually asked one vendor why not offer that in the BIOS like the competition and was told they felt consumers would get confused and then yell at them for forcing them to reboot it. In general, I stand by the statement though. Very few vendors offer the ability to switch from Gsync to Optimus that it's fair to say practically zero.

Here is my experience with the Area 51m and Dell customer service. I bought it from HIDEvolution on Amazon. They apparently tell us that "It is rare for a product that we have quality checked to fail so quickly, but it does happen from time to time." They are of no help either so far.
Update: I posted the same review on Dell's website and I received an email that my review is against their guidelines. So they cannot publish my review on their website. I did not use any vulgar language or gave any inaccurate information. Tactically, they sent me the email to which I cannot reply. I am going to call them up and ask which part of my review is against their guidelines. They simply don't want us to put negativity be reviews. If they moderating what reviews we are supposed to put, what's the point in having such an option? No wonder they only have positive reviews for this laptop on the Dell's website.

It is still in the first generation and I can see there are too many defects with this model. I am a doctoral candidate in mathematics education and bought this laptop a month ago thinking it will be perfect to render my video lectures, animation, and also might as well finish writing my thesis on it. I don't play a lot of games. The laptop was faulty from the day I received it. I had to reinstall Windows 10 to make it work. Now a week ago there are artifacts appearing on the laptop screen. I thought it is a driver's issue and updated it. It didn't help. I cannot even get into the windows desktop as all I can see a black screen and weird artifacts after login. I bought premium support from Alienware and contacted them via email. I told them how important this laptop for my academics but they didn't reply promptly. Their responses are days apart. They gave a set of tests to run to make sure it's not a big issue. They are just waiting time as after all those tests, it is apparent that I had a faulty GPU. I gave up and called the customer care and told them the issue and updated with run tests. Then they created a job order where I had to send the laptop to their repair center. I paid for premium support so there is a In-home repair service but they did not listen to this at all. They said there is no other option but to send the laptop to their facility. They promised me that end to end service time will be less than 5 business days. After four days, I received an email saying that there are some failed parts in the laptop and they don't have those parts right now, those parts MAY arrive in five business days. They have no idea how it is affecting my academics. I relied on this thinking it is a powerful computer. They are ignoring customers suffering because they will have to answer for packing defective parts. I searched Reddit and other forums only to be surprised that I am not the only victim here.
The bottom line is : buy this laptop at your own risk and don't rely on this for serious works. If you badly thinking to buy this laptop, I would wait for the next generation of this model so that they will have some time to understand customers sufferings and ensures not to pack defective parts.
Another update: I received an email saying that they may get a hold of new parts in another 4 days and if the laptop still has an issue after replacement, they are going to extend the repair time to another 10 business days. I spent more than three thousand dollars on this laptop thinking it will help with my doctoral projects. I had to spend more time in the repairing than actually work on my academics.
It has been 12 days and they still have no idea when the parts will be available. They just stopped replying my email.
This is completely my personal thoughts coming from my experiences and readings on online forums about the product.

I've not run any synthetic benchmarks, but I have run in-game benchmarks using the built-in benchmarking tools and my A51m 2060 has been crushing them. Shadow of the Tomb Raider on ultra with SMAA enabled is scoring 81 fps, for example. Hitman, Ultra SMAA is averaging 127 fps. Farcry 5, 96 fps on Ultra SMAA. The Division 2 on Ultra, 81 fps. All meeting or exceeding the 2060 benchmarks I've seen and destroying the other 2060 laptops like the Triton 500 (as I would expect from a "desktop" class laptop). I am new to benchmarking, though, so am I missing something? The whole reason I benchmarked it was to determine if I wanted to send it back. Shortly after i ordered the A51m, and while waiting for my order to ship, I saw rumors about heating issues and then saw a review for the Triton 500, which seemingly has similar specs but was much cheaper. Well, since getting the laptop, my fears have been squashed. I have no heating issues and this thing is a beast. I'm thinking about putting a video together since I haven't seen anyone do that yet.

'Upgradeable graphics/laptops have not been done before' ? What do you call the socket CPU and MXM socket GPU models that existed prior to the 10 series? When there was a standard MXM 3.0b reference board provided by Nvidia there were LOADS people putting Clevo and MSI GPUs in Dells for generation after generation, hardly ever the other way around. Dell/Alienware didn't like that and took more and more steps to lock down their systems and they lost a huge chunk of the enthusiast market. Frank Azor is making the right noises after years of the wrong noises defending poor quality garbage (his justification for generation after generation of soldered junk AW 15s/AW 17s for years was "the market doesn't want sockets" "the market doesn't upgrade") but it will take time for that sordid history to be forgotten and more than the hype around a single model for the real high end enthusiasts to trust them again. Trusting them to make the next generation graphics able to be user-retrofitted (and purchased for a reasonable price unlike Eurocom, MXM GPUs are available direct from China for usually half of what they ask) is only part of it.

Upgradability would be cool, if you didn't only have ONE supplier. Also, every desktop I've had has been "upgradeable" and besides adding more memory, or maybe an SSD, I just used them until I bought the next NEW desktop. I never upgraded anything. So I'm not sure if this feature is really all that cool for someone like me. If DELL absolutely committed to making reasonably priced upgrade kits, that kept the laptop useful for 5-10 years then maybe.

How about going with the 2070 vs the 2080? I mainly do video and photo editing, the last game i actually played on any of my laptops was the new CoD and it actually played on my G75VW, Core i7, 32GB RAM, 1TB Samsung SSD, 4TB HDD, 2GB GTX 660 on a 17.3" screen so i think a 2070 would be a huge jump.

With the 2080 RTX included is it possible in BF V/Metro to turn on DLSS? Nvidia specs says DLSS is only available in the 2080 at 1440p, not 1080p. This would suggest you’ll never be able to use it in the Area 51M when using the 2080, and therefore never benefit from the perf improvements.

I was looking forward to this video but am left rather dissatisfied by the review. The comparison in this video was pointless, and not helpful at all. How about an apples to apples comparison by comparing it to, for example, the Clevo p775tm with the 9900k/rtx 2080, or the HID Evolution offered Clevo p870tm-r with a 9900k/rtx2080 that has a vapor chamber heat sink, or at the very least the MSI GT-75 with the 8950HK and the rtx 2080. This video was very biased and not a true representation for what's out there. I have nothing against Alienware, but Clevo (aka, Sager, Evoc, etc.) has been using desktop components for years as opposed to Alienware's claim of being the "first or only" laptop that uses desktop and/or replaceable components!

Would we just wait until *every* single laptop is reviewed? I am sure we will be seeing Clevo and MSI and Acer and Asus big laptops too. But you start somewhere. This is one of several RTX laptops we have but the only RTX 2080.
