- Murren is a traditional Walser mountain village that captivates visitors with its breathtaking alpine beauty.
Perched at an elevation of 1,638 meters (5,374 feet) above sea level, Murren is a place where tranquility meets grandeur. Its lofty position ensures unobstructed views of the surrounding Swiss Alps.
Murren is one of the Jungfrau Region’s two car-free villages. You won’t find bustling traffic or noisy engines here. Instead, visitors arrive via aerial cableway or on foot from Lauterbrunnen or Stechelberg.
The village is a postcard-perfect scene with charming wooden chalets, adorned with flower boxes. These cozy abodes blend seamlessly into the natural landscape.
Murren gained international fame thanks to the James Bond film “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.” The futuristic revolving restaurant on the Schilthorn, known as “Piz Gloria”, became a key location in the movie. The Schilthorn itself, with its 360° panorama, offers views of the iconic Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau peaks, extending all the way to Mont Blanc and the Black Forest.
Whether it’s summer or winter, Murren enchants visitors. In winter, the region boasts 53 kilometers of ski and snowboard pistes, toboggan runs, and winter walking trails. Beyond the Lauterbrunnen valley, you’ll find additional ski areas in the Jungfrau region. In summer, explore 200 kilometers of walking trails, including themed walks like the North Face Trail and the Flower Panorama Trail. Families can enjoy playgrounds and picnic areas.
Take a funicular ride to Allmendhubel, situated just above the village at an altitude of 1,907 meters. From there, gaze out at the majestic peaks and immerse yourself in the alpine wonder.
In summary, Murren is a timeless alpine gem, where wooden chalets cling to the mountainside, and every vista is a masterpiece. It’s no wonder that visitors from around the world consider it one of the most beautiful mountain villages, a place where nature’s grandeur meets Swiss charm.
