Oh *man*. I'm a very big fan of Clash: AoC and Zenozoik as a whole, for the same reasons that you mention.
To see a video with *this* much effort in it on the game is phenomenal. There's lots of jokes in the writing -some of which land better for me than others- but things like recreating the Ritual and the Tchacks in a 3D animation to convey your score, is... quite astounding.
That's going the extra mile. The fact you took the time to remember the names of the mooks, like Ekeke and Tralkis, was already a hint to your love and enthousiasm to the world. And your partial snake creature is... it's really cool! Using the neck arm to hold a skull to mimic a face, while the snake head has a hand tattoo and the snake tail has bones tied to it to simulate a leg, that's genuinely strikingly bizarre. In a kind of uncanny valley.
All the enemies being recurring characters makes them feel like a Team Rocket of sorts. On a technical level, they're fun too: they've got their own movesets, like the Stances, which means that every encounter will have a different matchup. Every one will be different.
Auga the Beastmaster has a surprisingly quick elbow roll attack to his name, decent side swipes and a slow karate chop. Tarnas sports long range thanks to his hammer, plus high damage and the longest combo of all foes & a spin attack. Strofo's cartwheel dodge and spin-dash/triple slap plus her boomerang, Keratas' charge & bear hug grapples plus his LEAP that is only shared by Ekeke, Arsakarsa and Diogenes, Tsiu Kotopol's quite far-reaching belly push, etc.
All different behaviours, all different ways they can interact. Always keeps a new encounter fresh.
Same goes for all locations having exclusive enemies, like the Travelling Players, the Constructs & Shadows, and the Corwids of the Free. I suppose the swamps are an outlier here, those have more general wildlife.
But still. There's always new folks. Always new mix-ups and encounters.
Interesting that you describe the Mercenaries' monologues as "arguing with their shoulder angel"! I never perceived it as such but i see where you're coming from.
For me, it's just showing what kind of personality the mercenaries have. Not associated with our moral convictions of what is right or wrong, but their own code by which they traverse Zenozoik.
    - Arsakarsa and Keratas have accepted the world as a ruthless place where you do what you have to do in order to survive. People that fight against the current annoy them.
    - Tarnas takes it a step further. He actively believes in a sort of "Survival of the Fittest", that the world isn't just ruthless but that the world and its inhabitants are meant to always fight against each other... and for the strongest to come out on top.
I think he uses this philosophy as an excuse for being a bully, for when he loses the Ritual, he exclaims "This is an outrage!"
But since the One Law is almost like a rule of nature for the Zenos, like gravity and the tides, it's like he's getting angry at an animal for eating some fruits he wanted first. Dude respects nature when it's convenient for him.
    - Tralkis and Strofo are in it purely for the reward. For having power and influence, for seeing other people grovel before them and then telling them to go kak themselves.
Biggest jerkwads around. And some of the most dangerous.
    - Ekeke is in a similar boat, but more so because he seems like a downtrodden and wretched figure that yearns for recognition that his Mercenary peers get.
    - On the note of status and recognition, but also of the most moral Mercenaries, there is Verruk and Kroggo Longtooth. Kroggo indeed seems to be the most heroic in wanting order in Zenozoik, perhaps being a bit lovestruck for Gemini and using it in part as an excuse to fight. But he speaks with conviction and when losing the RItual, he gracefully says "As the Law commands".
Verruk speaks with the most grandiosity of a new age arriving for Zenozoik, exclaiming himself a hero in an overt, theatrical manner. He's in it from pride and self-interest, but... he seems less of a Gaston from Beauty & the Beast, and more like a general glory seeker that runs ahead of the game.
    - Tsiu Kotopol and Auga the Beastmaster stand out to me, because they have their own convictions on morality. Both tied to nature, like with Tarnas, but a bit more... genuine.
Auga outright rejects the idea of justice and fairness, and instead speaks of the pleasure of the hunt and the fight.
Dude speaks of a fondness for being the leader of the pack too, for being in a position of power. Which shows in his personal Cthenodont and a later encounter where a second wild Cthenodont is found alongside him and his mount, raising no fuss. Lends some credence to his name, to having a kind of special presence amidst the wildlife.
I don't know if this is proof that he *loves* his mount as such, but i'd like to think that he has solid enough of a mind to know that loyalty isn't made through force alone, but an understanding of the fellow life in the world.
Goes for hunters in general. To catch an animal, you need to think like an animal. To think like an animal, you need to learn the way they perceive and understand the world.
(Will admit, with Auga i may be looking too deep into it)
Tsiu Kotopol is an anthropophagist-- he eats sapient life. (with all the different creatures in Zenozoik, i can't really say "cannibalism"). Heck, he eats all sorts of life. You can see some dead dogs near his presumed lodging where he's first found, feeding the Kawkaws, plus a repurposed asset from Zeno Clash 2: The corwid hugging the wooden beam, dying in a fire. Roasted or not, Auga's keeping a corpse around.
But... when you hear him monologue, he speaks something like this:
"Today i eat the worm. One day, the worms will eat me. But today, i live, and thus i eat."
Essentially, Carpe Diem. Auga has already made peace with the fact he will on day die, but he's still here and kickin' to do what he likes in the here and now. He's close to being Corwid material, come to think of it.
Even when you return to him after being knocked out and are Nighttime Pseudo, he does say "Oh, come on, i didn't even get to put the stove on yet!" which implies annoyance... it feels less egregious than Tarnas getting angry that *random chance* isn't always on his side.
    - Finally there's Blahgg and Diogenes.
Blahgg is a thug, but actual murder isn't on his agenda. Dude may be the most miserable of all the Mercenaries, alongside Ekeke. The quote "He's no better than the rest of us", makes me think Blahgg thinks everybody in Zenozoik is already a jerkwad. Perhaps he's so egocentric he can't think in ways beyond self-servitude, and projects that onto everyone else.
I have no idea what's going on with Diogenes. He lives in a barrel and hits people with a pan.
Will turn this comment into two separate ones, because it's very big.

24:23 Just like a lot of the things I like about this channel, that being it’s unconventional (some may say ugly) appearance, AND how original it is, I REALLY wish the TH-cam algorithm would promote more of those smaller channels that ACTUALLY respect the intelligence of their viewers, NOT the TH-cam Kids-like slop we keep getting day after day.
I never even heard of this game until you talked about it here, but all in all, I really enjoyed the review (though I think for the intro, you could’ve added a little commentary of your own, like maybe a joke or something), and your channel deserves MUCH better on here.

I thought this was going to be another review of a bad game. The fact that it's a game from 2023, the issues with launching it and that it's a 10 year late sequal to a 15 year old series made me think that it's going to be another stinker, but I'm surprised how good it looks and sounds. Even if I'm not interested in playing it, it's at least good to know about it so I can recommend it to someone who might like it
Edit: I just realized that Xavier from Xavier: Renegade Angel would fit perfectly into this game lol

(comment nr. 2, posting again because it seems like my initial message got deleted upon posting. Apologies if you receive it twice)
Interesting that the scenarios that had more than three enemies were among the worst for you. I see the issue you have with it, yet even with them being so rare, it's not an issue i share.
You already mentioned that the enemies can hit each other, so in those fights, you can capitalize on that. Combat's not only about hitting, but also putting yourself in a favourable position. Retreating to make the enemies line up behind each other to avoid them swarming you, is still active engagement in combat. You think about where you want to go while considering the current situation.
Some may hock a rock, or in Strofo's and Kroggo Longtooth's case, a boomerang and a boulder respectively, but those can be turned around to your favour too with the blocking and immediately throwing them back. (except the boulder.)
Plus, using Defend at the right moment makes the enemy move slower for a bit (the reverse is true too) and fills up the Special Meter the quickest.
You mention in the video yourself that you hadn't adressed the Super Meter nor the Guard Meter. In the Guard Meter's cause, i want to use that as an argument against your view of the combat. In part, at least.
The animation canceling is undeniably a big part in making fights go quicker and you've got a solid point in that, to make the most of it, you have to learn the rhythm of your own movesets. You show off various sweet combos and nice chaining of moves in the video.
I feel that your skill is a bit more... high-level play compared to most. (Or perhaps higher engagement).
As you know, the Guard Meter reduces damage of a hit by 50% and makes Pseudo receive less damage. Refills on its own, is full by default. Like a Stamina meter.
Unlike most Souls-type games, the Meter emptying doesn't prevent you from performing any attacks. But attacking quickly in succession leaves you out of your more resilient default state.
    In essence:
Leaving behind your extra defense and getting in that rhythm of offense feels oh, oh so good.
But when you *do* get hit, you will feel it all the more.
Not just because of the damage, but because you are thrown off your rhythm.
That rhythm is not the default state most players find themselves in, i reckon.
When health gets lower, a player may get more defensive. Try to get back to the actual default state of having the Guard Meter back up. Break off their own combo and manouvering around to let the Guard Meter recharge-- just in case it does go rathbirds-up.
One player may choose to put their skills to the test in keeping the foe locked in a combo, while another person wants to be more careful. Evasive or defensive. Perhaps they'll charge up the Super Meter with well-timed blocks.
There's various ways to approach combat depending on who plays
I'm an enthousiast for the genre of character action games. Or hack-and-slash, or spectacle fighter, or whatever-the-genre-name-is-right-now.
A big part of the appeal in those types of games is the comboing. Finding yourself in a position where you already know the most efficient way of defeating enemies... and then being able to afford yourself to mess around with your enemies. Turn them from a threat, into a dance partner.
Or, if you want to be demeaning, a toy.
Like i said: One steps beyond "the most efficient way" and looks for the tools and moves that they like the most.
Clash is similar in this way to me. You can only use two Stances and three Specials at once, all different from one another, and it's up to the player to choose which ones they'll like most to want to stick with. There's a Steam forum where people have discussed their favourite "builds". It's fairly big.
Granted: The RPG stats and upgrades for them do muddle things a bit. Especially when you find some Stances and Specials late.
But! There *is* a NG+ mode. I haven't checked it out, don't know if it will solve your issues, but i do think it allows to start out with all your gear, stats and stances from the previous playthrough.
On that note of efficiency and RPG mechanics, there's another hack-and-slash/character action game that mixes these things. Darksiders 2.
Some time ago i had a chat with someone about how the numbers & stats, again, can muddle things up. Can make players pursue higher numbers instead of technical aptitude. Those that do like styling on enemies, may become annoyed by attacks killing enemies too quickly.
But on the other hand... there's nothing *forcing* us to engage with that either.
I want to experience a Darksiders 2 playthrough with deliberately underleveled weapons, to really force myself to make use of the weapon movesets, evasive manouvers & spells instead of tanking hits with the occasional nice combo. Having a Respec option at the demon merchant Vulgrim is nice too.
Clash could have definitely benefitted from a Respec option too. For both the figurines and the stats.
I don't know how many folks would share this perspective, but it is there. And like with the Stances themselves, it's one of the many ways in which players may want to go about playing it.
Amongst this genre, there is one game that is quite close to Clash: AoC and quite legendary for it. A PS2 game by name of God Hand.
Likewise, it has an emphasis on melee fighting, but instead of stances, you can only assign individual attacks to a Combo Chain, and individual inputs. There's a good amount of videos on it by now.
It's more technical and complex than Clash, but in terms of story, world and atmosphere, Clash is *miles* above it for me. Characters... depends on what you look for. Music's good in both, but Clash reaches closer to one's emotions.
TWO VERY BIG COMMENTS from me, but I hope they were interesting.
If you took the time to read all these through, thank you very much for doing so. Once more, i want to state that you went above and beyond in your video and i don't want to dismiss that. I hope you had fun making it and that it will help spread word and attention of Zenozoik, so that this beautiful bizarre and ugly world may return in cool new ways, time and again.
I thank you for this video.
