    IMO, the reason those pickups sound so good is that although they're humbuckers, they're low output, so the harmonics remain pristine and audible. They have an almost acoustic ring to them.

    So, I have an HB ST (strat) vintage style guitar. I swapped the Roswell pickups for a set of Fender Tex-Mex pickups I had on hand from a past project. There was no perceptible improvement. The Roswell pickups in my guitar were great - I assumed there would be a noticeable improvement when I put in brand name pickups that cost half what I spent on the guitar. Nope.

    Good honest assessment as always. I’m not a reverse headstock fan either. For what it’s worth, my most recent Squier vintage modified jazzmaster did not have any scuffing whatsoever and did not need to have the truss adjusted or any other adjustments made. Came set up great from the factory. These lower cost Chinese guitars are getting made better and better.

    I have this guitar in the sunburst. I had the frets dressed and also had a bone nut and a tort pick guard installed. I will have the tuners swapped out for GraphTech Ratios. The pickups are Filter-Tron style Alnico 2 humbuckers that sound great. All in all, a good guitar that can become excellent with a bit of work.

    I have the sunburst version of this guitar, without the belly cut. It had a few minor issues when I received it from Thomann, some parts were not fitted straight and sturdy (bridge, ferrules, one of the tuning keys). I fixed that without much trouble. Furthermore I shielded the control cavity and the pickup switch cavity, polished the frets and replaced the oversized pickup screws. But: the neck is great, the pickups sound great with a little crunch, the reversed headstock is not a problem at all, in my experience. I can really recommend this one. Pricewise, you can buy one just for the heck of it.

    Happy New Year!!!!!! those scuffs on both sides might b from some type of stand or block that it was resting on while being inspected or strung ....try taking a 'magic eraser' and gently with the eraser wet - see if u can absorb the scuffs off the guitar. I have had better luck with Wolf Guitars than HB ones ....the Wolf guitars seem to go thru a better quality inspection before being shipped out and their frets are always flawless. With the HB , how many guitars does that make now for your collection ( including bass and acoustic) ????...........try stringn up the HB with flat wound strings and see how the filtrons sing than...I did that with my Epiphone Swingmaster and has made a great difference, bending becomes irrelevant but vibrato takes on a new trick of the tale.... Enjoy your new guitar !!!!!!

    I have this HB and enjoy the tone and look. The pick guard was a sad sight and replaced with a 4 ply tortoise. I also put a bone nut and roller tree's on there for fun. The neck is nice and lacquer free for smooth playing. I would call it on the thin side with a flat radius. The frequencies, for me, give lower mid's pronounced a bit, with some high top end adding just a bit in there, creating a fullness humbucker flavor but with less output than my other humbucker guitars.

      @@60CycleHumcast Depends on what time it is from, The one you have is the newer one, The MS-60 i have, i bought around 3-4 years ago and the guitars back then only came with wilkinsons, Roswell wasn't a thing on the HB guitars or basses backthen.
      Roswell is pretty new to what comes being a stock thing in HB's today, Might be a good thing tho, The wilkinsons in my ms-60 is quite noisy compared to other singlecoils, i don't know if that noise problem is as present on the Roswell ones.
      Also to note, The price of the HB doesnt matter to much, The standard series comes with no name pickups, The Vintage models and etc. comes with now roswell, just to keep in mind.

    From Leo: I like the guitar, and I think the pickups sound like they will work, even if that lack some of the note to note clarity of a true FilterTron. A true FilterTron does not have a very high output so it is a trade off. The minor finish flaws are pretty small for anything in that price. I agree, the reverse headstock is silly. It is like designing a stereo with the knobs on back or a computer with the keyboard behind the screen. If the neck pocket is sized to accept a standard replacement Strat neck, you could replace the neck with a Mighty Mite replacement and still be ok for the money.

    I've got my own 'El Cabron' which I made myself about 5 years ago. It's a beautiful guitar if I say so myself. When I was building it I decided that I was going to make it to high end specs regarding hardware etc.......but......like a twat I spent not far off £250 for a set of TV Jones Classic pickups. I didn't know any better at the time and fell for the hype.
    I have since then learnt a lot about pickups and most of the time I wind my own sets for my 9 guitars.
    A few months ago I stumbled upon Roswell pickups and as I don't have the components to wind my own Filtertron type pickups, I decided to have a punt at their FLT pickups for about £23 each 😮!!
    All I can say is wow !! They kick my TV Joneses to the ground. I was super impressed with their smooth alnico 2 Filtertron-a-like. I checked them against my TV's with my multimeter and they're close on the DC resistance, and close on the inductance. I am 99% that they're wound with 42AWG wire - IMO the best wire to use on Filtertrons. They also came in nice little cloth tie bags and there was also a nice touch of a pick with an alien head (Roswell UFO stuff).
    For under £50 I couldn't be happier. So much so, that my TV Joneses are now for sale and never again will I spend the kind of money that I did on the TV Jones.
    I'm now curious as to what other delights Roswell have for sale, and I might just rip out my other expensive pickups that I bought in the past and swap them for Roswells, then sell my expensive ones to get back the money I stupidly spent thinking I was getting something special.
    Roswell pickups are very good. Don't fall into the trap of snobbery, placebo, and utter bollocks that I fell into. You do not have to spend hundreds of pounds to get a good set of pickups. Roswell FLT's cost less than a fifth that I paid for my TV Jones Classics and they're much better, it's ridiculous !!👍

    • @nazmoking3171
      @nazmoking3171 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The reason for this might be the fact that most cheaper guitars use ceramic magnet pick ups and they tend to have a darker sound than the Alnicos.

    • @60CycleHumcast
      @60CycleHumcast  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nazmoking3171 it also might just be a quality control thing, i've noticed with duncan designed pickups some will sound really good and some wont, with a higher end pickup someone will be doing quality control to make sure each pickup sounds the way it should before its shipped. Magnets to make a difference though.

    • @kimhansen6384
      @kimhansen6384 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have had quite som experience with cheaper pickups for Tele. They were all overwound, which translates to higher output and less treble. Some of them
      were Alnicos, but that didn´t help at all. I think they think people wants high output.

    Question: if you were stuck on a desert island in the middle of the German countryside and had to choose between that and the MS-60, which would you pick?

    • @60CycleHumcast
      @60CycleHumcast  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have the ms-60 with the tremolo and its a fun guitar but also quirky in the way fender offsets can tend to be quirky. The pickups are low output and bright. the te-90 is a more traditional all around players guitar.

  • @puddytat62
    @puddytat62 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It's kinda like watching Ryan Fitzpatrick try out a new guitar... Eerily similar looking not to mention name!
    Good that you picked a D chord as the first chord to play. I find that nut adjustment is woefully awful on alot of cheap guitars and the G string tends to be a bit high off the frets. So when playing a D the G string gets stretched or pushed down too far and makes the D chord somewhat sour sounding. This sounded fine. Well for a couple hundred bucks I think you are good to go.
    I did see a recent video of a HB vs a PRS and I think even the PRS guy was a bit shocked at the price difference and playability and sound being quite marginal. Both the guys were top players so that does help but for the weekend musician doing weddings or events I cannot believe you would need the $3500 PRS. For a club or bar that really makes little sense. To me anyways.
    The reason why American guitars are so expensive is partly the labour ... PRS is known for taking weeks to make a neck never mind a whole guitar... and that employee has to be paid. As well some wood and the finish can be expensive. On an electric I frankly don't think that is nearly as important as an acoustic which solely relies on the quality of the wood and structure to create tone.
    As far as Thomann having stuff in stock... Uggh that is so frustrating. The stuff is virtually never in stock and if it is you better order that very second because it will be gone in days.

    • @60CycleHumcast

      standard parts like the bridge or tuners could certainly be swapped, i have a feeling you would need to cut a new pickguard to replace that though. I haven't messed with a squier standard tele but id say the build quality is similar to the squier contemporary tele i have. It really comes down the the pickups in that scenario, do you want the twang/punch of classic tele pickups or the chime/crunch of the filterton style pickups of the harley benton? thats not a decision i can make for you.
