Brazilian Bossa Nova is the genre. Has that very pleasing jazz sound. I believe this was Astrud’s first recording or her first hit. But she went on to have a long career singing this style and there are many YT videos of her if interested. Edited to add -hearing Dominica describe Astrud’s voice as delicate I think is perfect. It really is delicate and really draws in the listener.
Please listen to the studio version. Astrud's husband Joao Gilberto sang the first part in Portuguese, but he did not know English and Astrud did. So, they enlisted her to sing the second half of the song and the song and Astrud became international stars. For your own pleasure, listen to Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd's song Desafinado to listen to more of that classic early 60's Bossa Nova sound.
The way Getz modulates his tone to match her delicate vocal is just sublime. A truly talented jazz musician on his own who really proves he understands how to create magic as part of an ensemble. Do yourself a favor and listen to the original version from the 1964 album "Getz/Gilberto". Enjoyed your reaction!
First I wanted to thank you for reacting to a live version of this song. I became familiar with it back in the 1960s. But I only heard the studio recording played on the radio. It's a real treat to see them live. Great reaction. Take care...
Remember this song it's 1964, l was 10 year's old and you can imagine what adolescents like me and my friend's were saying about this sultry song,🎵 🎶 a simpler time we were so innocent not like today! 💃🕺we thought the girl from lpanema was being naughty😮,, Peace 😊✌️ your 70 year old forever Young Hippie Gary 🕺Ah!💃 Great Reaction👍
I definitely remember this lovely music on the transistor radio quite regularly. Beautiful voice from her and the music from Getz absolutely wonderful. I was only 5 when this was released but still remember it...🎤🎶👍
Thanks for doing this! One of the most beautiful songs ever. I can hear it on a loop over and over. Fantastic. Oh, and great channel too! I watch it all.... ❤❤❤
Beautiful! I was eight years old and life was exciting. We had the Cold War and military threats and government corruption and various other things that were not conducive to a good life but as children, we did not see it. We would go and play outside all day and do at least one dangerous thing each day. When we met people, they would smile and say, 'hello' because they did not have phones that were more important than their fellow man. Louis summed it up with his song, 'Wonderful World'. That is how I remember it and I remember The Girl From Ipanema like it was yesterday. Thank you for doing this one.
Nice to see the video of her, but do try to listen to the studio version when you have a moment. Also, if you like Stan Getz, check out his Sweet Rain album.
I was 2 years old when this song came out I had three older siblings so I’ve heard it a few times over the years, was great to see a live performance .
Lovely song and lovely singer-she’s so demure and adorable-demureness is a lost quality, shame, it’s very attractive~Melanie in Mississippi Y’all should review Dave Brubeck’s “Take Five”, or almost anything from Julie London-one of my favorites is “Oh Daddy”. Or Fran Jeffries singing “Meglio Stasera” from The Pink Panther. I really love that cool swinging early 60s milieu.
A song for the ages. If you have the opportunity listen to the version by Antonio Carlos Jobim (who along with poet Vinicius de Moraes wrote The Girl From Ipanema) sung in the original Brazilian Portuguese (the most beautiful language in the world in my opinion). If this gets you intrigued about Brazilian music then my suggestion is to explore further. . I've dived in deep into this country's music and all I can say it has enriched my life hugely.
While doing Brazilian music another excellent example is the movie Black Orpheus , from that same time period . There are a bunch of really good samba and bassa nova songs in it , One name which I remember is Manha de Carnaval
Happy you finally got to this song. One problem, you need to listen to the original recording which is sung in both English and Portuguese with Carlos Jobim.
Wonderful performance of a lovely song. Perfectly complementary 'voices' in a gorgeous duet. More tranquil than silence. The very definition of timeless. IIRC Astrud appeared on UK TV, singing this and other songs, a few times. Best Wishes. ☮ I skimmed her Wikipedia page. If true, Stan Getz was not a good person to her.
I was in high school when this came out, and teenagers being oh so mature, we revised the lyrics in many ways to entertain ourselves. The song just begged to be messed with.
Doesnt this just make you think of lying on a beach somewhere in the sun with a long gin and tonic and a cool onshore breeze. Meanwhile its been minus 8 for three straight days in Scotland!!
Hi, another great song in this vein is Fran Jeffries’ “Meglio Stasera” from the Pink Panther. Or her singing “Sex And The Single Girl” from the movie of the same name. It starred a young and adorable Natalie Wood. Or Dave Brubeck “Take Five”. Or anything from Julie London, such as “Oh Daddy” or “You’d Be So Nice To Come Home To”. Or any 😅song from Frank Sinatra from the soundtrack from the movie “Pal Joey”, such as “There’s A Small Hotel” or the movie soundtrack version of “Lady Is A Tramp”. Or my favorite from the film soundtrack “I Didn’t Know What Time It Was”. Watch the movie “Pal Joey” if you can, it’s Sinatra at his Rat Pack best, with Rita Hayworth and Kim Novak. I love the cool slang in the movie, such as Frank calling women “dame” or “mouse” , or when a character misspeaks and starts to correct herself, her colleague says “Let it lay”, ie “leave well enough alone”-you have to hear it in context to hear the humor. “The Pink Panther” with Peter Sellers, David Niven, Claudia Cardinale is really good too. I love the early swinging Sixties, before mod and then hippie. I love this early 60s era of cool swinging style.I love the irony and sophistication and the adult-ness of the period, before earnest sincerity took over as a style.
Radio and music was more diverse in 1964, the number one hit was the Beatles I want to hold your hand, Beautiful songs like the girl from Ipanema were played right next to I get around by the Beach Boys followed by Hello Dolly by Louis Armstrong. Half of the top 40 were Motown songs.
Bosa Nova in Black and White copyright next listen to Beguine the Beguine by Cole Porter performed by Artie Shaw then Tango Tango by Piazolla . Music died once they invented colour TV.
Love this song. One of my favorites is by Diana Krall, Live in Rio, where she gets that audience to sing the original in Portuguese. It's wonderful. th-cam.com/video/usH4nVyy9A4/w-d-xo.html
Never fails, whenever I hear this genre I always feel underdressed. 😂😂😂
Rightfully so.

She was lovely and her singing so delicate. Really beautiful music.
Yes. I’m glad you’re introducing this gem to others. The song has been in my memory bank for …many….years.
A wonderful, sweet song with the amazing Stan Getz. As John Coltrane once said, and I paraphrase, "we'd all sound like Stan Getz if we could".
Please listen to the studio version. Astrud's husband Joao Gilberto sang the first part in Portuguese, but he did not know English and Astrud did. This song and performance delivers a few moments of pure peace !
One of my all-time favorite songs.

Ditto
Astrid Gilberto first language was Portuguese, she had to learn the English lyrics phonetically, but she can really can sing
I definitely remember this lovely music on the transistor radio quite regularly. Beautiful voice from her and the music from Getz absolutely wonderful. I was only 5 when this was released but still remember it...🎤🎶👍
Always loved this song! Thanks for sharing it.
Iconic jazz vocal performance

Classic song!!❤❤❤
Stan Getz, the top of the sax players.
Nice to see the video of her, but do try to listen to the studio version when you have a moment.

Getz was a monster on tenor, right up there with Coltrane, Rollins, Hawkins, and Webster.
Nice Jazz 🎺🎼

One of my favourites!!!😁😁🇬🇧
This kicked off a big Bosa Nova boom in the US when it came out.
While doing Brazilian music another excellent example is the movie Black Orpheus , from that same time period . There are a bunch of really good samba and bassa nova songs in it , One name which I remember is Manha de Carnaval
You should do Sukiyaki by Kyu Sakamoto...!!! It was the first non-english song to hit #1 in the U.S....!
💯great great song 🎶🎵
For sure...
It was very popular back then.
I have heard other versions, but it is great to hear the original.
Happy you finally got to this song. One problem, you need to listen to the original recording which is sung in both English and Portuguese with Carlos Jobim.
Ya the studio is much better. Sounds like no show prep.
Not to be a Debbie Downer but the girl who inspired this song passed away recently
👍👍

Best Wishes. ☮

When I was a little kid I always thought this was Dusty Springfield !? I wish Dusty would have covered this song she would have done and amazing job !
If you like this you need to check out the singer Sade. She has very much of this feel in some of her music. 🙂
I was in high school when this came out, and teenagers being oh so mature, we revised the lyrics in many ways to entertain ourselves. The song just begged to be messed with.
can you react to another bossa nova band sergio mendes and brasil 66 they had a few hits !
Check out Aguas de Marco, Elis Regina and Tom Jobim- magic. Also, Joao Gilberto and Luiz Bonfa for straight Bossa Nova, incredible...
Doesnt this just make you think of lying on a beach somewhere in the sun with a long gin and tonic and a cool onshore breeze. Meanwhile its been minus 8 for three straight days in Scotland!!

The girl from Ipanema is real.
Recorded also by Frank Sinatra.
