The clogging of different holes and the consequences of each was a subject I was having a hard time grasping. Most videos I watched did not explain it thoroughly... Thank you for being so detailed yet easy to understand!
I completed 2 ground schools…Sportys and Pilot Institute….only after this video do I feel confident of explaining myself in a check ride scenario. Thank you again. I keep saying it over ‘and over…but… really, I’ve learned so much from your videos.
@munchkin8742 could you give a review on both sporty and pilot institute. I am thinking of getting one of those two and would like your advice on which I should get
@@Manualv12sonly Hey there….first let me tell you I’m a non traditional student and got into the game late at 57. Now that I’m retired, I can do what I really want….and that is flying. So, being older the learning curve is a bit different. I started with PI and they are very detailed. The lessons are good….but the videos are Greg instructing you verbally with some animations. After getting through about halfway, I just felt something was missing. I expected more about how to actually fly the aircraft (and that issue was subsequently corrected when he came out with a supplemental Cessna 172 operations video). Each module has a very nice test bank, so you can repeat yourself as much as you want if you feel you need it. I’ll tell you right now…VOR was weird and I did not get it at all ….found some great videos online…including Free Pilot Training and these got me on track. Only after I got the concept did PI’s videos shine…..now that I understand what he was getting at. And only after you understand will you know what I’m talking about. I think Josh from FPT gets it right…instructors don’t really know how to teach it, so….there is a bit of a struggle but you get through it. Anyhoo….PI is very comprehensive, he states he does not teach to “the test” and he wants you to understand concepts. That being said, he does go over some of the tricky (poorly worded FAA questions he’s run across) just so you get a feel for what they are looking for. That was helpful, cause, wow…I’ve never encountered so many poorly worded questions on an exam. I was gunning for 100 and got 95, and the 3 questions I missed ( think I recall the ones from the exam) and I had to sit and think about what they were asking and go over and over what they wanted. But I can’t complain. That being said, if I just used PI I don’t think I would have done as well. I would have passed, but I don’t think I would have got the 95 score. I would say, I would have gotten in the mid 80s. Sportys was interesting. The videos felt more interactive and they mix it up with some actual cockpit scenarios. That was much more like my lessons with the CFI. There is an intuitive quality I like about Sportys that I did not feel with PI. Sportys is a shorter course. They cover the same concepts, but Sportys seems to pare it down to essential points only and each video has a bullet point narrative that covers each section. Their test questions were very easy…too easy. It is very easy to score 100 on a section where the video is 10-15 minutes and you do the test right away. So….there is false sense of security if you just rely on their test bank for the written exam. If I just used Sporty’s, I would have passed, but it might have been a bit uglier on the score….maybe high 70’s low 80’s. Best thing about Sporty’s is the test bank. You can run all kinds of scenarios, like all the questions (about 500), just the ones you previously missed, or by topic. So….that was super helpful when cramming right before the exam, cause, we all do want to pass after all! I would have liked if PI could do the same with their test bank….but you have to go to each module and/or section and redo the quizzes. So where does that leave us? Both programs run specials, so look out for Sun and Fun deals (April), so you can save a few $ and Airventure also has a lot of deals (same thing for Foreflight….I got a super duper deal talking to them at Airventure and just really get into it with the sales people and be eager to learn and they offered some deep discounts for my subscription and gave me free Cloud Ahoy access for 6 months). I supplemented both ground schools with Free Pilot Training and some of the others on YT. Josh Campbell is so good….if he opened a ground school I’d take his courses in a hot second. He’s an awesome teacher and he gets to concepts down concisely and follows it up with a video. I think that’s where he hits it out of the park. PI and Sportys have unlimited access, which is great as I re-study for the oral exam…cause you will forget some stuff and you never know what the DPE might ask. To knock it out, you’re going to want the Gleim FAA Knowledge test book. I used that as a test before the test to ensure I was ready. Either ground school give you the certificate needed to schedule the exam and you earn WINGs credit on the FAA site. That will help you lower cost of insurance…some providers offer a discount if you are part of that program. Be sure to use the free FAA materials such as the testing supplement….that is what they use for reference material on the exam, make sure you know that material….you will see it! I wish I could say one was better over the other. Wish I could say you only need one of them. It is going to depend on your learning style, how fast you grasp concepts, and how your path is being laid out. If going commercial or ATP, then PI for sure. I picked up their FOMO offer and got the instrument course since I’m definitely interested in continuing just for my own growth and development. If you’re just wanting to fulfill a dream, then I can think Sporty’s supplemented with all the stuff on YT would be sufficient. Hope this was helpful? If I didn’t answer something you specifically wanted, let me know. Call name Snoopy at 8D4 Sparta Michigan.
Prepping for my check ride and felt like I understood this system, but not so much about ‘what happens if…..’. As usual, your explanations and illustrations are tremendously helpful, thank you !!!
I watched this very helpful video during my primary training and it was great! Did I remember almost 2 years later? Fast forward to this week when I experienced my first ASI error on T/O roll out of nowhere. No sooner than I started rolling down the RWY in my 1947 Ercoupe (read OLD STYLE pitot/static tube) my airspeed jumped from Zero to 60 then 80 then 100 before I had rolled even 200 feet or so. RTO then went back and requested a high speed taxi. Same result. Avionics shop struggled for hours to figure out what was happening. Pitot/Static tube was clear (no clogs). Error #3 in this video says if SP gets clogged then ASI will indicate faster speed than actual. But I didn't have a clogged SP so what gives? ALAS...a massive Static Pressure LEAK in the Static line behind the panel. SO I am thinking this should be somewhat noted (Clogged SP and/or Static line leak cause the same error). Perhaps this is obvious to most but given that a super reputable Avionics shop couldn't figure it out for a while tells me this is not super common. Hope this helps.
Before this video, I couldn't memorize what happened if each instrument was blocked, and now I don't even have to memorize because I understand how everything works from this video in such simple and easy terms! thank you!!

Thanks for the explanation. If I may ask a question, how about if only the drain hole is clogged? Would the airspeed indiciated be faster than the actual one?
Can you explain to me how this system works on pipers with the pitot static mast? Apparently they have two static ports(bottom and rear holes, one of them acting as a static drain, completely separate from the pitot hole) and no drain hole for the ram air.
I actually don’t know how they drain. All I know is that the pitot and static ports are on the same device. I’m assuming it doesn’t need a drain or it drains some other way. I’ll have to do more research

If you used the alternate air inside of the cabin, what kind of change will occur? Are all three instruments going to show higher or lower? Is our cabin has a lower pressure than the actual ambient pressure outside?
Sorry, I just saw this question for some reason. The airspeed indicator and altimeter will show an increase. The VSI will initially increase then it will stabilize
Two Boeing 757's went down in 1996 because of this little gadget being blocked. One in Peru, the other in the Dominican Republic. Both flights were at night. No one survived either crash.
Static ports open directly to the outside of fuselage. When aircraft is flying, there will be air flowing outside of static port. How does this not cause a vacuum effect inside the static port. Due to the Bernoulli Effect, as the speed of air flowing outside of fuselage increases, the pressure inside static port should decrease. This means, on same altitude, depending on my aircrafts speed, I will read different values on my altimeter. What prevents this ?
I apologize, I don’t fully understand the question. If you are asking what I think you are, I believe the backup systems need to be able to be read with a loss of avionics. I would need to get into the books on that one though.
@@patjohn775 no, because GPS does not record the actual airflow over the wings, which means that if you're traveling 80 knots northbound and there's a 10 knot northwind then you're indicated AirSpeed and therefore the airspeed the wings are experiencing is 90 knots. I'm just beginning. What does breaking the glass do?
It allows the ambient air pressure into the system so it can measure the difference
Two Boeing 757's went down in 1996 because of this little gadget being blocked. One in Peru, the other in the Dominican Republic. Both flights were at night.
No one survived either crash.
That’s crazy to think about
Doesn’t the ASI act as a reverse altimeter if the static port is blocked
very good
Thanks!
So the only thing that could cause slow indicated airspeed would be a partially blocked pitot tube? correct?
Yes, unless it gets blocked while you are on the ground or something
We found the issue. The Pitot system has an essive leak rate. Replaced the Pitot tube and connections points
What happens if just the drain is clogged but the ram air inlet and static ports are open? How would this affect instruments?
You’re speed will be slightly off, but it should still work
