I just told my wife I want to make a portable paint booth in the garage I’m turning into the workshop… she asked “like a permanent one” and I said no like hospital curtained off rooms… enter TH-cam search and found this. Great job. Great ideas think alike I guess! Nice to meet you man!
More great ideas. This would also work well for a photography setup. I could hang different canvases or materials and put the lights outside of the curtains to create super even lighting. It's also a really nice backdrop system! You're awesome! Thanks again for sharing the knowledge.
I wish you were able to make more videos because anytime a new project or a video of what your doing. I get excited anytime I see a new video posted. I loved watching what you create. just amazing!!
ABSOLUTELY LOVE your DIY Paint booth. Watching your video gave me an idea to create a mobile paint booth in a box. The idea is in my head....NOW to get it out of my head to visually manifest. TFS your video.
Open the track... With a circle you have to hang and remove the cloth, if you opened it on one side like a spiral you could run a line to the corner of the garage and leave the cloth attached and store it with a cord. Easy storage and shorter setup/take down time.
Brian Prusa question: I’ve always wanted to try spray finishing but one thing has always puzzled me (& kept me from trying it). What do you do with the spray gun in between coats while they dry? Do you have to tear it down & completely clean between each coat?
Doug C I only clean completely once done with project. I’ll keep filling and spraying for 2-5 days depending on what I’m spraying (usually lacquer or shellac). I’ve never cleaned during finishing a project.
@@dougc78 Doug, I have the Rockler sprayer you see being used in this video. If you buy an extra container you see attached below the spray gun you can unscrew your paint cup, screw on the cap and take that extra cup you bought filled with soapy water screw that on and spray into a bucket . It cleans out the spray gun pretty dang well. With that said I can break down this spray gun and clean it faster than I can a paint roller.
This was PERFECT!!! Thank you Thank you!! UPDATE: I just bought the Rockler Ceiling System w/ hooks and the corner pieces. I gave you a shout out on your video!!
Mind blown. I was literally about to contract someone to build something similar to this in my new garage. I hate a mess when sawing and painting. This was right on time for me to watch.
I didn't know this existed!!! Thanks for showing us this! Don't get me wrong... I like Rockler's stuff, I find it pricey... yes it's good... but pricey... However, in this case I have to admit I like this system because it goes beyond a single tasks of being a paint booth, the overhead cable and hose management, hangers for stuff like lights, and other things is a really good idea so it serves multiple purposes and helps out in the shop. I like that.
Thanks for the idea(s) Glen. You explain the steps clear and concisely. I'm planning on something similar in one side of my shop to paint car and motorcycle sheetmetal panels.
You can make a simple ventalation system yourself. In the hole wher you fell short with the tarp... Just make a tall rack with 3 or 4 box fans stacked one on top of the other and turn tham backwards so that the exhaust side faces in and use standard a/c filters in front to catch paint fumes. Wire them all together so that one switch will turn them all on.
Nice job! My only suggestion would be to get your exahaust system in place asap, as even though your tarps would contain the overspray, you could still be working in a cloud of paint, and the cloud would stay in the air and seep out around even the smallest openings around the tarps. Could contaminate the air in your shop and home, puts an extra burden on your respirator. Lungs are sensitive, and everything you inhale gets in the blood. Gets in through the skin too. Catches up to you in the long run. But good work👍 Stay safe !!!
You are always right on the same issues I have!! I hate painting with a brush but am intimidated by the sprayer. I know I need to stain and paint things outside my dirty wood shop too. Tks man. Love my moveable wall. It has made taking pictures fun.
Nice! The last time I sprayed a custom closet I had the plastic drapes taped to the rails of the garage door. As well as you, overspray was somewhat of an issue but I managed by having a fan sucking it out of the way. It didn't fix it but it was manageable enough to finish. I may have to look into this as well. Looks great!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Great video! You could try attaching some type of rope system. Like the ones used on roman shades, and you could just pull it up and out of the way. You mentioned that you have 10' ceiling...that should be more than enough space.
Great video, Glen! If you had a bit more ceiling space, you could keep the tarps rolled up at the ceiling. The garage door would still close, thought it might help if you trimmed the extra tarp off the bottom. It would keep that part of the track clogged up, so you couldn't slide lights around from the middle track to the back near the garage door opener, but it would keep the tarps ready for very quick rollout.
Hello I'm one of your viewers, I'm so very happy and proud to see a young brother that is so talented as your self. I writing you because I need a little help with a project design. Basically is a wall shelf that is transform into a picture mural (flat against the wall) when not in use. You see my wife has pillows that she uses for decorating the bed during the day. but at night we need store them Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Ikea makes a similar system that isnt as HD but would work for the tarp and is much cheaper its called VIDGA. 55" rail is like $7 corners are $4. I know because I was thinking of doing something similar but mine would be just one straight wall across so Im thinking I might modify some of those cheap roll up blinds and replace the blind with 5mil visqueen that way I can roll it up out of the way for storage.
Hem the bottom edge up using something super simple. Could sew in velcro or just put in some wide and sloppy hand stitching. Use white thread to hide it.
Depending on the size of the back yard, could build a paint shed for a multiple video series. Also i think i have a spare tarp that will fit the gap. If i do ill send it to ya
Quick easy air cleaner... 20 inch box fan... 20 inch furnace filter... Just slap the filter on the back of the fan, blow the air away from you and your project. You can put several of them in your booth right behind your project as you are spraying and have them pulling the air away from you.
I agree! It is the only way I do it. If the weather is right I just open the garage door about 15 inches & let the filtered fan pull the fumes & overspray right out. I put my project on a removable rotating top I made for a hydraulic table I got at Harbor Freight. This old girl can't be crawling around on that ladder every time! BUT if I was young & strong, I might put up a spray booth like his! Great video!
You can cut those tarps down to any size you want and sew the seams. Use a nylon thread and a jean needle. Measure your cut and then add the hem which folds inside itself. So for a 1.5" hem, add 2.5". Fold the hem and iron it. Then sew. This is more similar to working with wood and a saw than you might think.
@@DIYCreators we got some heavy duty tarps like this, and we laid them out and marked off our cut every few feet then I just took my big scissors to the tarp and it was cut in no time. The fold and iron was tedious but with a helper to feed it, took about 10mins to do a 15ft hem. Sewing was the easiest part and took 5mins. The whole thing took about 40mins including remembering how to set up a sewing machine. I really like your track setup although there are a lot of bought parts I would fabricate myself. I would like to make a small booth like this and hang moving blankets behind the tarp so that I can heat the space. Often finishing is complicated by climate. A heated shop is a nonexistant luxury in the expensive northwest.
For the section under the garage door motor, you can buy a full sized door zipper kit for plastic sheathing/paint booths at the big box stores. They were about 10 bucks each last time I checked.
a bailing wire and bondo solution to over-spray is a box fan with an air filter attached to the back to recirculate the air in your spray booth. not perfect but it at least keeps the crap to a more manageable level. in your half booth setup you could get a small flexible duct kit and run it under the tarp to filter over-spray away from the work area onto some painters cloth to catch anything tacky that makes it through the filter. another idea you could do is something that someone in my neighborhood has. he made a custom panel that he can close his garage door onto with vents on the outside. I assume he has some sort of vacuum system to blow out fumes and dust. I only know it exists because he left it in place for a few days. shows that it wasn't permanent and didn't have to be broken down after a days work in the shop.
I have watched a few videos on creating a spray booth. Mi am thinking of getting rare earth magnets to attach tarp to garage door track. You have an awesome workshop
Man ... great channel. You gave me a lot to think about. If you were in my area, I would hire you to set up my garage... yours looks super organized.... thanks for the tips and ideas
I need to make this setup, been restoring a 1977 Yamaha IT250 and got everything ready for paint, however its late in the year and its never going to be above 60 so I can paint, today was a great day but then it turned out to be crazy humid and now everything I de-rusted has rust on it
I have a tacklife paint gun and I only use that because the surface finish. Because if I measure the time of cleaning the gun after, the faster painting time doesn’t compensate
If all your making is a paint booth and not hanging tools from it. Check out IKEA Vidga ceiling mount curtain track, it has the rounded 90deg corners. about half the cost of the Rockler unit.
