BF3 tube detects background neutrons 4…10 per minute. Quite useless, helps to understand physics.

this was a summary video what I have done because will forget after some months or a year. I have taken the setup apart as it occupied a desk and there are other physics experiments to try.

The BF3 neutron detectors have a very short shelf and service life. However they are true geiger tubes 3He detectors are much better but have a very tiny output in what is called proportional mode. You can make your own neutron detection geiger tube by adding triethyl or trimethyl borane to argon or neon. Shild the tube with a few mm of lead to exclude gamma.

Ok understood about He3 that the ionisation pulses are weaker. From boron comes alpha particle that makes stronger ionisation pulses.

Natural background at sea level was only 4…12 n/min. Smoke detector Am pill in contact with BF3 tube or Be window from an x-ray tube (or Li from CR2302 battery) gave only 1n/s which was too little to observe Al or Ag activation. Not worth to try. And Fusor which could give more n/s presently have no motivation to build. It was a steep learning curve about n physics and electronics.

Will try to take into account for future. it is the easy way to film.
