      @@DerMeinStar It's called TEACHING. Teaching involves a lot of talking in order to transfer ones knowledge from one brain to many other inquiring minds. Monkey see Monkey do is showing not teaching.
      I could show you how to plug something into the wall socket, but that still leaves you ignorant of the dangers doesn't it? But if I were to explain first what electricity is, how it reaches the power socket, explain what electrocution is and how it occurs. what it does to humans and animals when they get electrocuted then you'd know not to touch the prongs of the power cord when you plug it in, because it's very dangerous ans why. You'd know you'd be instantly zapped with high voltage electricity, which would cause the muscles in your hand to clamp shut not allowing you to let go of the cord at the same time stopping your heart and barbecuing your entire body to a crisp within seconds.

    I want to mention that the "none" interpolation is very useful for up-scaling pixel art, and sometimes down-scaling if the pixels are a square size of an exponent of 2 such as 4x4, 8x8, or 16x16 for one dot. It makes pixel art retain its pixelated look without any blurred or smoothed pixels when scaling by doubling or by some exponent of 2 times 100%.

    An image can be scaled to double its width and height without quality loss(each pixel prior to upscaling will be shown 4 times)... but it won't look as pretty and when you scale it down again you will lose quality.

    Just a bit of advice for the 'scale image' issue. The way you did it only scales the entire work and canvas. I wanted to learn how to just scale the one image layer. It would be helpful to viewers to explain ALL options, not just one. So the one way you kind of just threw aside was what I needed to know.

      you just squeezed 250,000 pixels into 324 pixels so you lost all your texture and details. Also if you went for 200x200 it would be better but still a huge amount less pixels. If you change the image to 16 bit you'll have a much better color flow. I would find an icon tutorial if you need an image that small with an icon creation program made for this stuff.

    Thank you so much for a great tutorial. Its simply great. There is only one thing that I am not quite sure and I'd extremely grateful for any help or clarification.:
    If I have understood correctly, Image Size is for the screen display while XY Resolution is for print purposes. If the still images are to be used in a broadcast video on a large 4K screen would an XY Resolution of 72 still be good enough and higher resolutions not have any effect on the screen display?
    Many thanks for your time and help
    Best wishes
    Fariborz

    • @syzygy4365
      @syzygy4365 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You would have to figure out the space between pixels. If I'm not mistaken XY for pixel images will always come out blurry unless some sort of AI is filling in the gaps, but if you have the scale size lined up with the dimensions you need it will easily scale up with not problem. (Square root as an example)

    I dont understand how scaling down an image causes it to lose quality

    • @DaviesMediaDesign
      @DaviesMediaDesign  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because you are removing pixels from the original image. By removing pixels, you're removing details, which reduces the quality.

    I scaled up the same image in GIMP with No Halo and with Paint, both 200% and 500% each. I can see no - zero - nothing ... difference.
    Also, on screen I don't see any difference between 72 ppi and 300ppi.

  • @johnwaaser201
    @johnwaaser201 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    But when I scale, I only want to scale one layer at a time. Usually I have one image and a lot of text, designing tee shirts. I can scale the text by using the text tool, not the scale tool, so I only scale the image, and so the simple scale tool works well for me!

    • @DaviesMediaDesign
      @DaviesMediaDesign  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In your case I would definitely use the scale tool! I just meant don't use the scale tool if you are trying to scale the entire composition. The scale tool is only for scaling layers, channel, or paths.

    Is there any advantage in scaling up or down in lots of small steps rather than just one large step?

    • @DaviesMediaDesign
      @DaviesMediaDesign  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No - in fact this will produce a much lower quality final product. Every time you transform your image (i.e. scale it up or down, or use any of the transform tools when working on a layer), you are having GIMP rearrange the pixels, which causes quality loss. It is better to have this action performed once, so that quality loss only occurs once, rather than compound quality loss through many transformation actions.
