    Excellent review, this is just the sort of information about a product that isn't available in a catalogue, so thank you for conducting an effective water-resistance test on this jacket and for sharing the unadulterated results. Cheers!

    This is so great because when I eventually see my friends again and they say what did you do during the pandemic, I can say; I bought a lot of watches. Watched a lot of EDC videos. And discovered that I’m not the only one obsessed with jackets!

    I got my Barbour Beaufort in November and I really love it. The first month I sometimes had some wax on my hands after touching it. Now not so much and I think I’ll treat it in a few months. I have the hood which is great for rain and I really like the look of it. Also the best thing about the Barbour are the handwarmers. They are fucking comfortable and at the perfect height. I really love these handwarmers. The weather is always shit in Denmark so I use them nonstop!

    • @TheIronSnail
      @TheIronSnail  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      YES TO THE HANDWARMERS!!! And ugh i have to get a Barbour now.

  • @blueband8114
    @blueband8114 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    If you get a Barbour get the heavier weight version, rather than a 6oz sylkoil. Mine is 8oz with a beeswax mix coating much better and hardier. The downside i find is the nylon sleeve linings, if you exert yourself wearing them, your arms get soaked in sweat.

    Halley Stevenson do actually make the waxed cotton for most of Barbours more expensive jackets. Generally they are regarded as THE company for that particular material. Companies worldwide use them for a reason. I hear what you’re saying about Barbours regarding monsoon weather, but they are pretty ubiquitous in the UK and we get ALOT of rain here 😥 and they cope pretty damn well, they just take a helluva long time to dry afterwards! Great video as always though dude, a good blend of info and entertainment.

    • @TheIronSnail
      @TheIronSnail  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good to know! Maybe it’s just the few examples I’ve seen made me think they weren’t the best! And fascinating with Halley Stevenson! I thought Barbour was all in house but maybe that’s the actual construction and not the fabrics

    • @lawrenceh7182
      @lawrenceh7182 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheIronSnail possibly. I know they used to be exclusively UK made until they were bought out and merged with Belstaff and do have stuff made in Romania as well now. I think the Belstaff side do produce solely in the UK still. Maybe the UK made Barbour stuff (more premium) are the jackets using HS fabric. As a jacket guy I’m sure you have heard of Manifattura Ceccarelli but if not they make awesome items. Originally used to produce Filsons European manufacturing until they started producing their own products. They make clothing of the highest quality and well worth a look. I think you’ll dig their designs if you haven’t seen them before. They have a yellow hooded parka that is similar to your Taylor Stitch but unlined and made in Italy as opposed to China and competitively priced if you shop around. Their mountain jacket is immense but quite pricey.

    It's wax is thornproofing, not waterproofing. Made for the brambles we have in the UK when walking in brush. American tin pants were made for the same resistance to mechanical damage. It is a modification of cotton to make it stronger and more durable. Not the fashion accessory that it is marketed as. They are super fashionable though. Great choice of garment. Nobody has tested the thornproofing. I wonder if it is on par with modern thornproof materials? 🤔 Maybe a video is due on this very subject 😆

    FYI, you can wax the zipper as well to help with the waterproofing.
    Can you actually buy wax to rewax this jacket? I've never purchased anything from TS simply because I don't see how they justify the price point on most of their items which are made in China when there's quite a few Made in the US competitors in the heritage workwear market offering similar goods at lower prices? For the $300 they want for this parka, yeah, I would have just gotten a Beadle which will outlast your grandkids and that you can rewax at will. That said, I never pulled the trigger on a Barbour myself because outside of England and maybe the Pacific Northwest where it's almost always at least misting on you, there's not really an environment where this jacket would be useful for long. Too hot and bulky for most non-winter months in the US and not waterproof enough for stormy days.

    • @TheIronSnail
      @TheIronSnail  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can rewax! I think you have to send it to Halley Stevenson if you want it professionally done but otherwise you can just buy a can of it from otterwax and go at it!
      The one thing I will give to Barbour is the storm cuffs, those show it’s just built really well but other than that this jacket feels like quality all around and I’m sure it’ll outlast me!
      I have run into a few quality control issues with TS but always had it resolved and they have a lifetime warranty + repairs so they aren’t too bad!
