    From this Canadian whisky fan to you, thanks for the enjoyable tour. I've learned so much about how my Scotch is made. Cheers

      Glad you enjoyed it! This was my very first distilling video, nice to see people are still finding it.

    Fantastic video and an insight as to how things progress. Looking forward to viewing more later.

    Thanks Jim and Brewbird for an excellent and informative video! Felt like I got a private tour inside a distillery and learned a ton! We need more pros/artisans like Jim creating magic! Can't wait till 2021 (?) to try some! ;)

      Ahh this is the very first distilling video I ever made. It's nice to see people going back to watch it.

    Great video, thank you for posting! At what point do the grains get removed? Before transferring to the wash stills?

    • @MissBrewbird
      @MissBrewbird  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. They get removed during the mashing/collection stage. The lauter tun has a false bottom to keep back the grains, while the wort is collected

    Tell me how the heating power changes during distillation depending on the selection of heads, hearts and tails. When distilling mash and low wines. Thank you

    • @MissBrewbird
      @MissBrewbird  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The heat is higher when distilling the wash since there is greater water content and the boiling point of water is higher, so we increase the temp throughout the distillation as the water to ethanol ratio in the pot is higher. For the spirit distillation, the temp is generally lower since it has more alcohol, and alcohol has a lower boiling point. Like the wash distillation, we will slowly increase the heat as the distillation progresses. The selection of heads, hearts, and tails is based on %abv.

      @@MissBrewbird Thanks for the answer. I have one more question why distillers have such a shape, I mean wider in comparison with height. What does this affect, in relation to high and narrow?

    • @MissBrewbird
      @MissBrewbird  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, sorry for the late reply. Narrower and taller stills favour the collection of higher abv distillate and certain flavour compounds (less heavy). Fatter, shorter stills favour the collection of lower abv distillate and greater collection of flavour compounds

    The scale of this is just mindblowing - example: 7:30 heads output is flowing faster than my bath tap open fullbore -it must be measured in litres per second, not my usual 50 drips per minute !

    • @gordslater
      @gordslater 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      also the teabag budget must be on a similar industrial scale

    And what is the heating power depending on the volume of the pot still

    • @MissBrewbird

      Sorry, I don't know the exact numbers for the heating power.

    Not a easy job! How do you compare to the brewery?

    • @MissBrewbird
      @MissBrewbird  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's actually very easy compared to a brewery. Everything is mostly automated so not much heavy lifting. In the brewery it is much messier, wetter, and you have to be much more careful about contamination.
