1980s was a beautiful time.I was born and raised in an urdu speaking family in Karachi. During my childhood i have noticed that my older brother was always listening to Jagjeet Singh gee and Madam Chitra singh and my dad was listening to Mehdi Hasan sahab. Honestly i enjoyed my brother's company more but when I came into my college life then i started to understand Mehdi Sahab's ghazals more and started spending more time to sit with my dad and listening to Mehdi Hasan Sahab's ghazals on PTV. To me both were my legends and I loved them equally.

I remember back then when I was in school, and I had just come back from tuition. I didn't know who this person was on Saregamapa... But I was hooked on to the voice and the tune.. I know who this person is today and I am still hooked on to this voice...Great Mehndi Sahab.... Emperor of Ghazals...
I have listened to many singing Khan shahab this Gazal but all I can say that they are not even 1% of him. I can challenge no one can recite even Ranjish Hi Sahi the way Khan Shahab do. My Grandpa used to say beta Mehdi Hassan k baad Gazal Gayki me sirf Kali deewar he.

But it is said that (According to Asha ji) when a Man suffering from lots of stress and pressure on brain that he gets thoughts of trying to suicide, listens Mehdi Hassan's Ghazal, That person becomes Calm and relaxed... Mehdi Hassan sahib was the pinnacle of ghazal gayaki. We are very fortunate to have had him leave so much musical treasure to savor in our lives. BTW, right next to Runa Laila (to her right) is Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan. He sang the beautiful "Jhoola Kinne Dala" in Muzaffar Ali's original film, Umrao Jaan.

It's, indeed, very difficult to rate the ghazals of the great Mehdi Hassan Saab as to which one is the Numero Uno because each one of them was so rich in content -- Labz, Sur, Taal and Loy. Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Saab was absolutely right in his assertion that no one could compete with the great Mehdi Hassan Saab in so far as his control over Sur is concerned! However, I consider the great Ahmed Faraz Saab's "Abke Hum Bichre To Sayad Kabhi Khawabon Mein Mile"( Qadrathejutt Version -- Pure Gold) to be the great Khan Saab's best ghazal ever because of its way of presentation, his lively interface with the audience and inimitable style of his rendition. In this ghazal, beautiful lyrics penned by the great Ahmed Faraz Saab was equally beautifully tuned into music by the great Mehdi Hassan Saab! What a killer performance It was! It was simply unforgettable! This ghazal has continued to be in my everyday menu for the last 40 years since 1978 when l first came into the contact of the great Khan Saab contact through his divine creations and will continue to be so till I bid adieu to this world. I am now an old man of 68 years of age. The great Mehdi Hassan Saab's divine voice is infusing a new lease of life and the will to live in me every day in and the day out! Beautiful silky voice still pitch-perfect at that age. And he knows, with the instinct and craft of the truly great singer, how to use only appropriate "adaas" that can roll out properly out of his throat at that age. You know its once in a life time moment when you have Jagjit Singh and Ghulam Ali in the audience, a young Sonu Nigam in the audience and the maestro Mehdi Hasan playing......the only two people missing are Ustad Nusrath Fateh ALi khan and Lata Mangeshkar. Such moments are etched in history. Gajendar Singh the producer of this show has always tried to bridge the gap between India and Pakistan through music, he deserves a Noble prize for peace if u ask me!

BTW, right next to Runa Laila (to her right) is Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan. He sang the beautiful "Jhoola Kinne Dala" in Muzaffar Ali's original film, Umrao Jaan.

It's, indeed, very difficult to rate the ghazals of the great Mehdi Hassan Saab as to which one is the Numero Uno because each one of them was so rich in content -- Labz, Sur, Taal and Loy. Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Saab was absolutely right in his assertion that no one could compete with the great Mehdi Hassan Saab in so far as his control over Sur is concerned! However, I consider the great Ahmed Faraz Saab's "Abke Hum Bichre To Sayad Kabhi Khawabon Mein Mile"( Qadrathejutt Version -- Pure Gold) to be the great Khan Saab's best ghazal ever because of its way of presentation, his lively interface with the audience and inimitable style of his rendition. In this ghazal, beautiful lyrics penned by the great Ahmed Faraz Saab was equally beautifully tuned into music by the great Mehdi Hassan Saab! What a killer performance It was! It was simply unforgettable! This ghazal has continued to be in my everyday menu for the last 40 years since 1978 when l first came into the contact of the great Khan Saab contact through his divine creations and will continue to be so till I bid adieu to this world. I am now an old man of 68 years of age. The great Mehdi Hassan Saab's divine voice is infusing a new lease of life and the will to live in me every day in and the day out! Perhaps, such a resourceful musician will ever be born again in this World!-- Amarendra Borah, Former Commissioner and Secretary, Finance Department, Govt Of Assam (India).

You know its once in a life time moment when you have Jagjit Singh and Ghulam Ali in the audience, a young Sonu Nigam in the audience and the maestro Mehdi Hasan playing......the only two people missing are Ustad Nusrath Fateh ALi khan and Lata Mangeshkar. Such moments are etched in history. Gajendar Singh the producer of this show has always tried to bridge the gap between India and Pakistan through music, he deserves a Noble prize for peace if u ask me!
They were incredible times. They will come again. We can't give up.
