Unfortunately, Jerry Lewis, in his attempt at humor, overstepped the bounds of civility and became downright insulting. Then again, maybe he thought he was in vaudeville...
People are grousing about something that was set up as a joke that the lady was already in on. She is heavy set, and she packages diet pills. She herself finds this dichotomy to be a source of amusement. As for his blurting out insults...There is a "rude" streak in a lot of comics...Don Rickles comes to mind...it is part of their persona. Part of his is that he "never grew up." He is a child in a man's body, and children say outrageous things. Were he a choirboy, he would not have been interesting. But when I think of all the marathons he held for Muscular Dystrophy, and his spokesmanship for that charity, By these actions, (and they are actions, not mere words) his maturity and concern for others emerges.
Back then, acceptable, humorous. Now, in the days of bullying and denying peole their humanity because of their appearance, NOT. I note that Bennet Serf made "inappropriate comments all the time. He started off by noting how "healthy" she was.
my favorrite game shoe evrn tho i wasnt arroundback then i love black and white movies as well as charming shows especialy this they all were brilliantand although Jerry Lewis humor may not have been to evryone's likinghe could never have been thanked enoughfor his har work and telethons no one ever did more ot even the socalled Walt Disney who was rumored to not like children all that much but loved the money much more BTW can anyone tell me why the host was called a moderator when host seems so easy and approriate Neverthless i loved then all wish i could see all the shows
Most of them either disrupted the game with their jokes (e.g. Victor Borge, Groucho Marx) or they were just incompetent players... However, quick-witted humorists like Steve Allen and Joey Bishop were great; they could play the game while still working in some relevant wisecracks, so I wouldn't say that all of the comics were bad!
I had forgotten how insulting Jerry Lewis could be doing his comedy 'schtick.' I actually felt sorry for that guest who packaged diet pills for Pfizer.
@@p.v.5142 In fact, Jerry Lewis was well known among his peers as smug, egotistical, self-centered, and very disparaging of women in general. This isn't to say that he wasn't one of the most talented people to ever come down the 'pike, which he was, but he was also a scumbag of the first order.
@@johnsarkissian5519 She had to know what she was getting into; a fat lady and diet pills? C'mon? She was a very good sport about it all and i think it comes off as one of the better segments of WML.
Bennett Cerf often pointed out competitors’ books like he did with the Fred Allen book. Class act.
Mr. Bennett paid rapt attention to how the audience responded to Walt Disney's signing in than when he first entered. Genius.
I sat on Walt Disney's knee when l was a little boy at Disney land jungle cruise
John made a mistake; JL asked, “ it wouldn’t have anything to do with physical therapy”. The answer was no. So JLWas right but John flipped a card.
Dorothy was SO smart!

Well said. It was still low and inappropriate of him.
@@leesher1845 true, but it was a different era, and the rules were so much different back then. Nothing like that would be tolerated now.

Jerry Lewis obviously has a chip on his shoulder

@@teresahooks3746 Typo,. Lol!
Never been a fan of Jerry Lewis
Jerry Lewis quip is probably best joke of ENTIRE SERIES RUN: "Does she take them?"
The comics were uniformly awful on this show.

You are 100 percent correct about Mr Lewis. Attention grabbing is his middle name
Cynthia Lyman Wow! That was incredibly rude!

I don’t think the lady was offended at all. Back then people could take a joke. It’s the 60s that changed it all.
