Hi Bob, I spoke to you briefly at Poolsbrook country park recently. Yes I had this same issue with my Fiat Ducato. Just did exactly as you have. Removed ECU sent to crashdata & refitted after reset. I also fitted a new battery before I turned the key again to prevent the low cranking voltage issue that causes it. I also believe manufacturer should replace or repair these as a warranty claim as they are clearly not stable. I know of no other vehicles that suffer airbag ECU faults due to low battery voltage. Thank heavens for crashdata. A great company. All the best Bob. Enjoy your uploads.
thanks Bob. Just to share an issue i had with you and your viewers, I had a glow plug warning issue on my van, not visible in the engine bay , which is same age as yours 69 plate. Relay is a nightmare to find. but it is there. Located on the passenger side of the van between chassie rail and outer wing (rhd) easiest way to get to it is , steering full lock to the right, remove enough bolts from the wheel arch liner to allow your arm through with a ratchet and 10mm socket. relay is located high up toward the headlight area, it is a bit awkward. Slide back the RED part of the multi pin connector. the plug will disengage from the loom. then the single nut can be undone. the relay will then be free. it is a sod to get to , but worth the effort. i had to fit a new relay to my van and the message dis appeared after start ups. From cold , there was no message , but once the engine was fully up to temp ,next restarts of the engine the message would appear after about 40 secs of engine running / restart and glow plug symbol would flash for about 20 secs. Relay is about £50 on ebay. I can offer part number if someone needs it , but the old relay is not to hand at the moment. I was just out of warranty as well. Prior to this , i had checked the fuses and they were good. Last thing i wanted to do was change a glow plug, as access is a pain, the relay was the next cost effective option.
I’ve a 10 year old Hymer Exis that I bought from new and today the warning light came on as well as a warning stating the air bag fault. It looks like I’ll be going down the same road as you so thanks for the heads up! Interesting there another blog by a chap who’s had the same problem but in his case the repair was over £200 and a new unit £300 so I’m glad I found your post. Thanks again.
Very helpful video Bob , If you forget to lock passenger door before you disconnect battery there is a little slot on the rear of the door that you can insert a flat head screwdriver in and lock it manually . There are a couple of videos on youtube showing how to do it
Saw this recently on Keith and Michelle’s channel Carefree Caravanning and Motorhoming. This is incredibly useful information. Thank you Bob, Keith and Michelle! 🚐
Not same issue but we had a persistent airbag warning light after an incident with a USB cable that became tangled in the steering column when we were going round a roundabout. Slight panic and an over zealous tug and turned out we had wrecked the steering module. It was safe to drive but It was a costly fix and we are super careful to route charging cables well away from the steering column now.
I wish that you had posted this two weeks ago. Same problem, module failure, but garage fitted a new unit (£500+ inc VAT) In hindsight should have at least insisted on retaining failed unit, so that I could either have it reset for possible future failure, or sold it on eBay to recover some of the cost!
Airbag light on my Peugeot Boxer this weekend, a quick search led me to your super helpful video, module on it's way to Crashdata today! Thanks so much for posting this video and all the information. Will also be fitting new battery!
Same thing happened on ours, it’s a known issue by fiat but they won’t acknowledge it needs a recall. We used northern auto tech to reset ours and they gave a full printout showing at the time the ecu failed the battery dropped to 11.2 voltage, the battery had been tested and it’s 98% efficient so dont rush out to change your batteries. We found the Votronic standby (trickle) charger had blown a fuse so whether this was in fact a voltage drop or a surge is debatable. Trickle charger working fine now, battery good and ecu still ok 🤞. Be interested to know if those with failed ecu also have alarm/trackers fitted, just a theory I have atm. Nice video Bob, that space is not meant for us chaps!
I had this in late 21 just before my MOT on a 2016 Hymercar Ayres Rock. I sent my unit to crashdata, and fitted a new starter battery but wasn't convinced it was that. It lasted till I sold the van in May 22.
thanks Bob thats a handy video..my auto-trail has the same error code.. it had a flat battery and was jump started by the dealer.. i will send it off for repair..
Bob this happened to my Fiat Ducato, and my friends Peugeot Boxer, Sent my module away to Crash Data Uk, back in a few days all working, done the job myself, £80 against a new module costing anywhere between £250 - £350, nice video thanks. Indecently a OBD reader will not find this fault.
Hi Bob, that was a fiddly job well done. Glad you got it all sorted out. This is a video to keep for future reference. Thank you for sharing, looking forward to your Scotland trip x Julie and Tony x
Another great vlog Bob! Just for reference, I had a passenger air bag way back in the mid 1970’s. She just wouldn’t shut up. I corrected the problem through the divorce method! 😇
Hi Bob, I had a low battery warning on my Land Rover. Turned out it was just my battery, although it was only 3 years old. Since then I’ve purchased a 12v digital read out. It plugs into a cigarette lighter socket, gives you 2 usb sockets and a constant read out of your battery voltage. Usually about 12.4 prior to start up and 13.9 during charging. Only a few pounds from Amazon but gives great piece of mind.
That was a useful video. I hope it doesn’t happen in our van, you made it look fiddly but doable, sadly I think it would be a garage job for me! Thanks for sharing.
Exactley the same problem as you, ECU is on its way to CrashData so hopefully will be resolved. It does seem like a design flaw as a lot of people have had the issue.
Hi Bob I have got the same problem out of the blue? our van is always plugged into mains with smart charger at home so cant believe its the Battery? , Only thing I can think of is I recently fitted swivel plate to passenger seat ? I have not got time to fix it like you did as away to France soon. just hoping its not going to be an issue ? Great helpful video as always👍
If a message Air Bag Warning comes up and it beeps, it's probably the same issue. You can press the mode button to silence the beeps but remember your air bags probably won't operate and it is an MOT failure. Best to get a garage to put a diagnostic checker on it.
Excellent video Bob. I had the Airbag light and followed your instructions to the letter. The module was turned round by Crash data in 3 days, fitted and error gone. They gave me an error code which was high voltage from the battery which made me think when plugged into mains don't, like I did, switch on the ignition to setup your Sat Nav etc ready for next day. If your battery charger happens to click in at 14.5 volts it will trigger and error. Low battery does same.
Yes had the same problem on my boxer took mine to main dealer as was still under warranty. Mechanic said when battery not holding full charge does something to module. Not sure they replaced it said they put in another earth to stop back feeding to module. Fingers crossed been fine ever since. Done approx 6k miles since problem. Said it was a common problem 🤷♂️
Hi Bob JENNY , IM a bit late watching your vlog on your airbag problem , just a thought if you watch carefree caravanning motorhome , they had similar problem, & keith also fitted new part himself , just a thought , take care
Had this fault in 2014 Boxer at start of February, used Northern Autotec but same process, so far so good after several weekends away. Not convinced by low or high voltage in battery, just poor quality units fitted by Stellantis. Reports i have seen while investigating fault say new units in past year have different manufacturer so should be less if a problem going forward
Thank you for the very good guide just had mine come on my neighbour had a reader and got code followed YOURE very clear instructions and now ready to send of ecu to the company you recommended
Had the problem on our Peugeot Boxer Elddis van fortunately was under warranty at the time had it sorted at Peugeot Llandudno a new unit was fitted also they fitted an extra earth to it ,thanks for the video if it happened again that’s the best and cheapest way to go happy travels always enjoy your videos 👍
Hi Bob, we had this happen on our 2016 Swift ducato while on hook up just before our euro trip last year, wasn't possible to get it fixed before we went away, (was told its perfectly safe to drive) so did our 3 week trip and sent it off to crash data on our return, unit was back with me within 2 days, fitted it and it's been fine now for almost 12 months, I think it could have been a power spike that broke it, because battery was and is fine still, hoping it lasts. 🤞🤞
It’s a pain, we had this problem last year. Local dealer couldn’t fix it, so eventually Fiat sorted it for us. Very expensive for what it is. Common problem apparently, and it could happen again. Thank you for the video.
Hi what did fiat do to solve the problem? Just had crash data reset the module on our fiat ducato but light came back on 2 weeks later our battery is fine
This happened to us this year. The first time we went to go out in it in March we got the beeping airbag warning. Luckily it was still in warranty so didn't cost us to fix it. It's a Fiat Ducato. The dealer told me that he had seen loads of these recently. He thought it was down to a bad batch of ECU's??
As you suggest it is a very common problem on most Peugeot Fiat cabs. Fiat and Peugeot do not recognise it as a warranty issue. Needs a class action to get them to recognise its a design fault.
Just left Portugal campsite and warning lights came up. Watched your video and read comments. Only thing I can think is that when we plugged in polarity was wrong way round. Quickly changed back but maybe damage was already done. Who knows? Thanks for video.
I believe it's low starter battery voltage when starting the engine that causes the issue. Most modern motorhome electrics deal with reversed polarity by simply reversing it correctly.
Failed on our 2013 Fiat Ducato on way to MoT. We had ‘AIRBAG FAILURE’ warning displayed. Waiting to get OBD check to see what code is. Fiat Commercial in Gloucester quoted around £750.
Sounds like what I paid to get my module changed the second time it happened. Have a look at my latest update - th-cam.com/video/QfR_4dUUi7A/w-d-xo.htmlsi=U0tQpy231QQoB5By
I’d come across the module when fitting some things but hadn’t realised it was the airbag one - the modules do seem very susceptible to voltage drops (which of course is expected) - I thought it seemed an odd place to locate it as if you split something could easily get in there. Thanks for sharing All the best, David 👍
hi mine has the same fault but never had any engine battery voltage drop as we have solar panel connected to it permanently as we keep it on storage unlike our old m/h the battery was always flat when we went to collect it so dont know what has given us the fault
hi bob .well never knew that & we have had 3 of these but just checking the history on the swift command APP & it shows a voltage drop in Calais waiting for the train home but the air bag warning didnt come on till 2 days later need to get it fixed for Spain in December @@BobEarnshawMoHo
Had the same issue in January with a 2019 van , battery tested fine. It failed again last week with the same fault. Not very good from a Fiat perspective. Off to Crashdata again to be relieved of another £84 😢
@@BobEarnshawMoHo I did yes. Advice from them was: Take your vehicle to an approved Fiat Professional garage to plug into diagnostics which will be chargeable. Depending on the code there may be some goodwill on their part. And then, only if you have had your vehicle serviced by an approved dealer from new will they consider not charging for repair or replacement. In the end you need to have paid Fiat extortionate prices for servicing to be considered for any goodwill.
Very fidley getting to it, but a great service from the crash data unit. Wonder how many have paid top whack for what seems like a common problem. Now they can youtube the error at least.
Great video Bob, We have a Fiat Ducato but as yet no problems with any airbag light. What would be the lowest - is it volts? - to let the battery go down to. I have an alarm and immobiliser and realise they will draw a bit of power, I tend to plug in the EHU to my plug socket in the garage about every three days for about six hours, is this good practice to keep the battery charged up please? I do also have solar panels, I think they might just be charging the leisure battery though. You can probably tell - this is quite new to us. Rgds Gary and Julie.
Had the same problem but mine was not repairable but sorted another one for less then half the price to what the dealer's was gonna charge crashdata had it back to me in 2 day's 👍👍
Hello Bob, I was viewing the comments on Travel Trolls video about the same issue you had with the airbag modular and saw your comment about the airbag light coming on again after crash data had reprogrammed the modular, I ask this because mine also came on at the weekend at it’s booked in with my mechanic on Thursday, luckily for me we purchased the van last year and took out a four year gold warranty so hopefully the cost for new and fitting will be covered 🤞🏻 This is annoying given that Fiat must surely be aware of this especially when it’s classed as an MOT failure and a serious safety issue if ignored if driven and the amount of people having the same problem. Look forward to your thoughts on this. Thanks, Mark.
I know, I rang Fiat yesterday morning and got a standard this is not a recall issue email. It's not good enough. Hopefully you get yours done under warranty.
Our airbag ecu failed sadly crash data could not fix but supplied a new unit and proxy aligned it to our old one. That was about 18 months ago and if I remember cost about £250. It is a really common failure that Fiat won't acknowledge.
hi bob .we have a swift 599 2019 with the same problem & the engine battery is ok & charging so dont know what has made the light come on . one thing if you take the earth lead off do you need to put the radio code back as no one has said so .george
thanks for that bob like i said never had any problems with engine battery . it was ok for 6 weeks in France then when we got home plug in E/H for a couple of days then setting off to m/h storage the light was on do you think it could have been a spike from our electric .george@@BobEarnshawMoHo
Hi Bob, Found your video interesting. My Fiat Ducato (2016) had the same fault immediately before the MOT was due!! Started with the Crash Data fix but it failed again while in Spain about a month later. Eventually persuaded Fiat to give me a new module even though it was out of warranty and was fitted by Fiat Professional main dealer but I had to pay labour charges. A very common fault and a good tip is let the module warm up before starting the engine. Hope yours will be OK. Al.
Fiat do acknowledge a fault with these modules and have upgraded them. My new one has a two year warranty. Contact Fiat Customer Service (Turin) if you have any further problems, hopefully you'll be OK. Any new module has to coded to your vehicle so a main dealer must fit it.
Hi Bob great video. Same happened to me so also went to Crash data. Reset done by them but disappointed as only lasted 7 weeks. Did you buy new one & from where? Thanks Paul 👍
Just had the same Airbag message and red light on dash myself, as we were setting off on holiday too. Battery voltage has never dropped as on trickle charge whenever vehicle not being used. Mine is a 2019 Fiat Ducato. It is rather disconcerting to be driving around Scotland with this warning light on knowing Airbags are non operational. Should be a recall on this safety critical fault.
@@BobEarnshawMoHo OK so I spoke to Fiat Customer Service UK today. They said I had to take the vehicle to an Authorised dealer for diagnosis and repair. A cost reimbursement request could then be submitted. So I spoke to the nearest authorised Fiat dealer who tells me I can take it down for a diagnosis at a cost of £125 plus VAT. The next available appointment is on the 26th June (6 weeks from now). They also warned that sourcing the parts from Fiat could involve a long wait as parts supply is terrible at present. And they said I would have to pay for the repair in full and take the reimbursement request up with Fiat myself. So I can see this taking months, costing a fortune, with endless hassle, fob offs and frustration. OK, so its off to Crash Data. Fiat should hang their head in shame (but almost certainly wont be bothered at all).
Three times I've sent my module to CrashData. Three times it's come back working. Despite keeping the vehicle on charge with an intelligent charger through the winter the airbag light is back on again. Batteries never drop below 13 volts. I'm at my wits end now.
Yes another one for the list, absolutely no reason all fine then on start up warning light came on. Does anyone know if this actually stops the airbags working? We were in France returning that day so had to drive all the way back with the added worry of faulty airbags :-)
Hello Bob, very interesting video. I have an identical issue. I have a 2015 Peugeot Boxer based motorhome, I had the same airbag warning as you described and had the nearest dealership to me, look at it. Robins And Day in Sale. They carried out the repair back in Feb 2023 at a cost of 169.00, today 20+ months later the fault has returned. I,m convinced it's due to the recent very cold snap and resulting battery voltage drop. I think like you I will return it to the same dealership, but this time request a brand new unit, for the sake of having a warranty. I have not contacted them yet for a quotation because it isn't going on any trips right now, so I can wait until it is milder weather. Regards Ian
@@BobEarnshawMoHo Yes I watched your vid, nearly 800 quid, they have a licence to print money. Maybe if I requested a new unit from the start, I could avoid the diagnostic tests ? Ill give them a call and find out. btw they say. By the way, they are known as Stellatlantis & You not Robins & Day
@@BobEarnshawMoHo you're probably right because if there is another contributary factor, then this will afftect the installation and performance of a new unit, perhaps in the near future. I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and pay. I'll come back and let you know what happens
Hi Bob, last update for the time being. They told me, because it is out of all warranty, they must do a full diagnostic, sad really wen we both know the issue. The earliest they can see me with a curtesy vehicle available is early Jan 25. A fee of 150.00 for diagnostics + 19.99 ins for hire vehicle, then whatever they choose to charge me ontop. I expect similar to your bill plus a little for inflation.
Hi Bob, we have this terrible squealing noise also. We are just looking into it and probably going down the same route as yourself, however we were wondering if when we do replace it and it’s finally in winter storage would we have to replace it again if our battery went down due to the elements?? Is there any way we can avoid this ie take our battery home during the winter and putting it on trickle charge etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated Have a lovely weekend and hope to meet one day Gordon Judi and the girls x
A squeeling noise could be a belt slipping, so best to get it checked. If you can't get a decent charge when in storage best to take the battery home and trickle charge it. Better still treat yourselves to some winters days out or camping!
Hello.A Ctec 12v smart charger.Take both your batteries vehicle & leisure home during winter storage. The Ctec charger can be used for both one at a time and left on.Once charged it goes into maintenance mode and tops up when req. I just leave one on for a couple of weeks then swap over.Keep a check on them with a multimeter standing voltage is 12.6v /12.7volts full charge 100% Hope this helps.Make sure the charger is a smart charger. Ctec have useful information on TH-cam.
The standard obd reader will only run diagnostic on engine management systems, the air bag Ecu and other Ecu use a separate pin in the obd port so make sure you get one that is capable of running a wider diagnostic to include air bag and anti lock brakes etc, they are of course more expensive
Hi Bob having seen a few Vlogs on this issue I did some research and found 9 companies in the uk that do the module resets, I called 6 of them and on average they do 15 units a week and in winter that can go up to 45, it’s not just batteries that cos it, putting jump pack on with the ignition turned on can spike the system. Should we think about getting the Motorhome manufacture’s to make representations to VOSA under safety recall as it is a safety issue. Catch you soon Dave, Julie and Toby the woof😮😮😊
Hi Bob thanks for this video, this is a problem I have just encountered, and have been trying to sort it out. Quite a few people seem to be having it and I think Fiat should recall the vehicles to deal with it, however I may follow your lead and replace the module, although it looks a bit fiddly. Thanks again.
@@BobEarnshawMoHoI had the same on a 2018 Ducato last year but luckily I had the Fiat extended warrant. Fist they changed the seat belt tensioner £750 and when that didn’t work they replaced the module £1000 all for free under warranty no questions asked. Now I have a solar panel in the front windscreen just for the starter battery during the winter months.
@Paul Vose I have a solar panel on my van, and it's always plugged in on the drive, so I'm now sure how it could be connected to a battery failure? I have a friend who has a diagnostic pc, it said drivers seat pretensioner, so we'll see what the dealer comes up with ?
@Bob Earnshaw yes, we haven't got the beeping noise on ours, just the little warning symbol, hoping they sort it quick, as its also due an M.O.T (I assume its a failure if the symbol stays on!) at the same time, and it's a week before our holiday starts !!!
Hi Bob, had ours sorted, it was the Module like yours, but it's been replaced with a new one as it was still under warranty, so free to me. Part was £227.57 & an hours labour at £45. So not as bad as I expected. Happy Travels...
I had the airbag warning light problem twice on my Bailey. The first time Crashdata were able to clear it, the second time they could not and I had to buy a reconditioned unit from them at around £300. Still cheaper than a main dealer. One point in favour of going the main dealer route is that they will guarantee the new unit whereas Crashdata will not. I think it is a disgrace how fallible these airbag units are.
@@BobEarnshawMoHo hi..I’m hoping not…I have tried again and it hasn’t come on…my intuition is telling me that it occurred just as I was activating the hydraulic self levelling and although the battery voltage was good; the self levelling can make the voltage drop to 11 odd volts temporarily….so I ran the engine and tried again…no alarm, until the morning I’ve plugged the MH in to mains….I’ll let you know how it goes.. If it is buggered I’m suspecting that it’s the same unit as your, 2017 Peugeot boxer…
We have sent ours to crash data and had it reset on 2 occasion and works fine for about 3 months then fwils again even after having a new battery and van kept charged up on electric during winter, not sure what do try next, airbag warning all the time
Looked a bit of a tricky job but very good service. On another note arrived at somers wood lunchtime on our way to Scotland.very nice lady who checked us in couldn't sing your praises enough. She said she has a nice gin with jenny and yourself when your here. Thanks bob for the videos if it wasn't for them I would have never known about this gem of a site.
We sent our airbag unit off to Crash data a year ago and the light came on again. Sent it off to them again and the light stayed off for a couple of weeks but came back on (Motorhome hasn’t even left our drive). Really don’t know what to do now, do I change the battery (which has been checked and is fine, or send back the unit to Crash data for a third time, or buy a new unit, or replace the unit and battery?) I feel the only winner here is Crash data.😢
You haven't seen the whole story. The air bag alarm came up again when we were on our way to the Orkneys. When we got back I got an upgraded battery and had the module replaced by Fiat Professional. Been OK since then. Touch wood.
@@BobEarnshawMoHo I did actually see your failed again too and have sent my unit off again but to another company this time. When it comes back, I will replace the battery before putting the unit back on. If that doesn’t work, I will probably have a meltdown before getting the unit replaced (as you did). 🤞 that’s not necessary.
All I can say is that ours has been OK since the upgraded battery and replacement unit. Also, I'm very careful when starting, leaving at least 20 seconds after switching ignition on, before starting.
hi again bob . so i am a bit confused you sent your ECU off to crashdata you fitted & the light went out but came on again so you went to a fiat garage ??.george
Four months later after sending it to crash data it failed again, so I got Fiat to fit a replacement unit, at least I'm getting a warranty. You need to be subscribed to keep updated! 😊
hi bob .my unit was knackered so had to buy a new one just short of £400 with 2 year warranty plus new battery dear do this motorhoming lark .george@@BobEarnshawMoHo
I've had the same problem with a Peugeot Boxer and also a Fiat Ducato base models. The Peugeot was fixed at Crash Data but they were unable to repair my module in the Fiat. I had to buy a new one from Fiat at great expense. I think this is a design fault and very common.
Ideally you want to check the Alternator output underload at about 2000rpm with Headlights on Heater blower on full blast Heated mirrors on etc! It doesn't matter but you had the Voltmeter Pos + Lead on the Earth.
@@BobEarnshawMoHo wedge the probes in the Battery and just rev up the Engine! Or use Crocodile clips. Dint have to go any where. Potentially you could fit a Volt meter gauge somewhere? Easy to do!
hi bob brilliant video ,,i have been dreading the air bag light ,,very common flt on motorhome fun ,,dont think I'm as worried now ,,as you have showed us what to do ,,,thanks
This is such a common fault on these vans. I suspect a design flaw. I had this error and my battery voltage had certainly never dropped below so I doubt low voltage is the cause. In fact the voltage when its in the post is 0V and that didn't break it.
Great job Bob ! I would have aches and pains after crawling on the van floor. It was bad enough putting up a new awning 😂😂 Glad you got the fault sorted before your Scotland trip 👍🏻🚐😃 Trev
Very helpfull Bob. I've heard about this issue bwfore, but good to get refresher. I really hope the error code truely enables CrashData to determine that a reset will sort it kr if the module is really defective and needs to be replaced. Thank you for thix very informative video!!
Hi Bob don’t know if you are aware but the Motorhome and Caravan club are offering another fuel card 3p off of diesel it’s called Coco+ (Uk Fuels). Thanks for videos👍
@@BobEarnshawMoHo I can't believe there hasn't been a recall for this. Every MoHo owner I speak to has had the same problem. Some have paid £750 which is bad enough - but required a 14 week wait for the part to come from Italy. Seems to be models from 2014 - 2020. If it wasn't a MOT failure - I would just leave it.
Just be aware Crash Data offer NO warranty with this £84 repair, I went down this road and 11 months later it was on again, persist in complaining to (in my case Peugeot) manufacturer and I got a new module for free.
You will need to install a new engine battery as well as the error will return on start up eventually given my personal experience. I ended up purchasing a new version module from fiat. Good luck with crash data if you have any problems. They're the most unpleasant company ive ever dealt with if you try to make a warrenty claim. Best avoided in my personal experience
Hate to be too negative about this but judging by the high number of failures it does seem this is a manufacturing default by Fiat etc. They don't seem to be very proactive in ensuring this doesn't happen so easily so people have to pay out to get it fixed themselves. Also sure Crashdata don't mind having to fix so many which is probably a fairly simple solution. Just good the fix price is quite reasonable.
@@BobEarnshawMoHo Yes quite sure the manufacturer's are quite aware of this problem but prefer to turn a blind eye to it and not open a floodgate of recalling.
This problem repeated itself 4 months later see this playlist for the full story - th-cam.com/play/PLUi3rqw12j2oFgoNsJB9ilX2m8J4i0s_F.html
@@BobEarnshawMoHo what did you do the second time?
You'll have to watch the next video in the playlist to find out.
Thank you.
Cheers Bob, mine has developed the same fault, getting it sorted in the next couple of weeks. Your video helps to confirm that it can be sorted
Thanks for sharing.
Just be aware I ended up getting my unit changed after all when it failed again. th-cam.com/video/QfR_4dUUi7A/w-d-xo.htmlsi=sy0-8GLUHELuahKX
Very helpful video Bob , If you forget to lock passenger door before you disconnect battery there is a little slot on the rear of the door that you can insert a flat head screwdriver in and lock it manually . There are a couple of videos on youtube showing how to do it
Great tip, thank you!
Saw this recently on Keith and Michelle’s channel Carefree Caravanning and Motorhoming. This is incredibly useful information. Thank you Bob, Keith and Michelle! 🚐
Yes, that's where I saw it first as well. Thanks.
I had the same problem on ours I took out and went to Crashdata in Liverpool great service
Carefree Caravanning first mentioned it abiut a month ago, that's where I first heard of it after it came on.
Airbag light on my Peugeot Boxer this weekend, a quick search led me to your super helpful video, module on it's way to Crashdata today! Thanks so much for posting this video and all the information. Will also be fitting new battery!
I hope it fixes for you.
We had this last year. They provide a greet service.
A decent diagnostic system like our garage had will show the fault, it won't clear it.
Thank you.
Great idea
That's interesting, by mistake I've switched the ignition on when plugged in. Maybe that's can be a cause rather than low voltage!
@@BobEarnshawMoHo they reported 14.6v caused the failure which is my initial charging volt before is settles down to 13.2 ish. Lesson learnt.
Fantastic, you may have just saved us over £500. Thank you for filming and sharing.
You're welcome. Hope you get it fixed.
Yes, that's how I leant about Crashdata.
Thanks, I suppose time wil tell. I don't believe my battery went flat at all.
Thank you for the very good guide just had mine come on my neighbour had a reader and got code followed YOURE very clear instructions and now ready to send of ecu to the company you recommended
Thank you
Thanks Bob! We will definitely keep this in mind as ours is a Peugeot Boxer cab. Great advice ❤x
Yes I saw that Peugeot were suggesting an earth strap.
The same problem first quoted £750 by fiat dealer, rang fiat assist they spoke to them and bill was £380 wish i'd have known about crashdater
@MyAsh1974 Update at beginning of this video in early September

Always worth checking the wiring connectors under the seats too.
Thanks, I did check them and they were OK.
Thanks Bob, I got the unit out and sent it to CrashData (from France) so hopefully they can fix this fault. Great video.
Let's hope they can.
I suppose that's possible.
Thanks for sharing
All the best, David 👍
The Module is a Sensor in itself and has to be central, same on all cars! Just got to make sure NO spillages as that will Scrap it!!
We have the same issue with our 2019 fiat ducato this appeared just before easter, we will have to check the warranty.
hi mine has the same fault but never had any engine battery voltage drop as we have solar panel connected to it permanently as we keep it on storage unlike our old m/h the battery was always flat when we went to collect it so dont know what has given us the fault
The voltage drop occurs when you start the engine quickly, without waiting 20 seconds for all the lights to go out on the dashboard.
hi bob .well never knew that & we have had 3 of these but just checking the history on the swift command APP & it shows a voltage drop in Calais waiting for the train home but the air bag warning didnt come on till 2 days later need to get it fixed for Spain in December @@BobEarnshawMoHo
Had the same issue in January with a 2019 van , battery tested fine. It failed again last week with the same fault. Not very good from a Fiat perspective. Off to Crashdata again to be relieved of another £84 😢
Have you tried Fiat customer service?
@@BobEarnshawMoHo I did yes.
Advice from them was: Take your vehicle to an approved Fiat Professional garage to plug into diagnostics which will be chargeable. Depending on the code there may be some goodwill on their part. And then, only if you have had your vehicle serviced by an approved dealer from new will they consider not charging for repair or replacement. In the end you need to have paid Fiat extortionate prices for servicing to be considered for any goodwill.
Doesn't sound like goodwill to me!
You really don't want the battery to go below 12.2V or so. I leave mine plugged in all the time, it keeps the battery in trickle charge.
@@BobEarnshawMoHo Thanks for the invaluable advice, I will do that. Thanks again.
Yep, now have the same fault on my 2016 ducato motorhome, so video very instructive thanks. Can you say how much to repair the unit please?
Think it was, £70. Best to check with Crashdata first.
Thanks for the informative and helpful vlog Bob.
You're welcome
Had the same problem but mine was not repairable but sorted another one for less then half the price to what the dealer's was gonna charge crashdata had it back to me in 2 day's 👍👍
Good to hear they can do that as well.
Hello Bob, I was viewing the comments on Travel Trolls video about the same issue you had with the airbag modular and saw your comment about the airbag light coming on again after crash data had reprogrammed the modular, I ask this because mine also came on at the weekend at it’s booked in with my mechanic on Thursday, luckily for me we purchased the van last year and took out a four year gold warranty so hopefully the cost for new and fitting will be covered 🤞🏻
This is annoying given that Fiat must surely be aware of this especially when it’s classed as an MOT failure and a serious safety issue if ignored if driven and the amount of people having the same problem.
Thanks, it's not just Fiat either.
Yes ours is a Peugeot but the airbag ecu is a fiat.
hi bob .we have a swift 599 2019 with the same problem & the engine battery is ok & charging so dont know what has made the light come on . one thing if you take the earth lead off do you need to put the radio code back as no one has said so .george
I didn't need to put the code in and the battery was disconnected fir several days.
thanks for that bob like i said never had any problems with engine battery . it was ok for 6 weeks in France then when we got home plug in E/H for a couple of days then setting off to m/h storage the light was on do you think it could have been a spike from our electric .george@@BobEarnshawMoHo
Not sure if you've seen my update on the module th-cam.com/video/QfR_4dUUi7A/w-d-xo.html
Not a bad saving if your willing to get your hands dirty, and a quick turnaround ! 😊
Yes, it's a bit fiddly, but worth it.
Our extended Auto Guard warranty covered our diagnostic, replacement & fitment of relay.
Excellent and helpful video thanks. Frustrating dealing with Crash Data Ltd though. Thanks again.
Very useful, can I ask if you keep your MH charging when at home, or not?
Yes, I leave it plugged in and on charge when at home, always have.
@@BobEarnshawMoHo thanks, I was told not to as damages the battery, with my limited knowledge couldn’t understand why it would 🤔
Nor me, what damages batteries is going flat.
Hi Bob,
Found your video interesting.
Al.
Thanks, interesting, almost like Fiat acknowledge the issue. If it happens again, I'll go to Fiat customer services.
I had a replacement fitted at my local Fiat Professional garage. There is a link in the video description for the full story.
I agree with you. It's a safety issue!
Well, since I had my unit replaced by Fiat Professional, it's been OK. I'm still being careful when starting up, but touch wood...
Hi Bob is it good enough to just take the neutral ground connection of battery ? Just a bit apprehensive 😅
Wouldn't do any harm to both off, but as long as the earth can't touch it's battery connection it's safe enough.
@@BobEarnshawMoHo thanks Bob I think I will have to remove the Airbag ECU and send it to crash data like you did . Did it work for you ?
It worked from April to the end of July, so I'm thinking of going to the Fiat Professional garage.
@@BobEarnshawMoHo can you let us know how that goes ..I am worried that this fault if it's recurring can lead to getting an MoT complications
I'll be updating everyone how it goes.
Regards Ian
Yes, I ended up with an expensive bill for a new unit.
@@BobEarnshawMoHo Yes I watched your vid, nearly 800 quid, they have a licence to print money. Maybe if I requested a new unit from the start, I could avoid the diagnostic tests ? Ill give them a call and find out. btw they say. By the way, they are known as Stellatlantis & You not Robins & Day
Yes the costs are pretty high. The dealer would probably still want to do the diagnostic tests.
Really useful thanks did you leave the battery disconnected while the ecu was away being fixed ?
Yes, didn't want to confuse anything!
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Have a lovely weekend and hope to meet one day
Gordon Judi and the girls x
A squeeling noise could be a belt slipping, so best to get it checked. If you can't get a decent charge when in storage best to take the battery home and trickle charge it. Better still treat yourselves to some winters days out or camping!
Hello.A Ctec 12v smart charger.Take both your batteries vehicle & leisure home during winter storage. The Ctec charger can be used for both one at a time and left on.Once charged it goes into maintenance mode and tops up when req.
I just leave one on for a couple of weeks then swap over.Keep a check on them with a multimeter standing voltage is
12.6v /12.7volts full charge 100%
Hope this helps.Make sure the charger is a smart charger.
Ctec have useful information on TH-cam.
Useful vlog for what seems to be a common problem.Might be worth getting an OPD reader.Basic versions are pretty cheap
Catch you soon
Dave, Julie and Toby the woof😮😮😊
I think I try and contact Which? magazine and see if we can get it raised.
Shared on the Bailey Forum Bob as Peugeot have the same problems. Ps great Vlog!
Thank you
Hi Bob thanks for this video, this is a problem I have just encountered, and have been trying to sort it out. Quite a few people seem to be having it and I think Fiat should recall the vehicles to deal with it, however I may follow your lead and replace the module, although it looks a bit fiddly. Thanks again.
I didn't replace the module, just had it's data reset.
Great info, Bob. we have a similar issue with ours, it's going in shortly to the dealers as we still have warranty, I'll let you know... 😮
It will be interesting to see what they do.
I had no idea how widespread this problem was until I made this video.
Mine popped up this morning. Do I need the error code or can't I just send it off to Crash Data to repair once I get the part number?
Crashdata will need the error code. You'll need a local garage with a reader. Check the Crashdata website first.
Very useful video, thanks Bob.
Thanks for watching
Great thanks Bob
Great video, very thorough, my warning light and beep has just come on…but went off again…typical..MOT tomorrow 🙄
Oh no, that's going to fail the MOT.
Fingers crossed for you then.
It passed the MOT so my suspicions were right, a small dip in the battery voltage and the air bag écu didn’t like it👌
That's good, hope it doesn't come back.
We have sent ours to crash data and had it reset on 2 occasion and works fine for about 3 months then fwils again even after having a new battery and van kept charged up on electric during winter, not sure what do try next, airbag warning all the time
I'm going to see if I can get mine replaced by Fiat, at least I would have a warranty.
Thank you, look forward to that then. 😀
It's a shame the dealers didn't offer this service via Crash Data.
Bob, has this been a long term fix? i.e. has the warning come back on after a short time?
Yes it came back when we were in Scotland, I've had it replaced since then at the main Fiat Dealer. There's a more recent video about that.
hi again bob . so i am a bit confused you sent your ECU off to crashdata you fitted & the light went out but came on again so you went to a fiat garage ??.george
Certainly is!
Interesting how you fixed it hopefully it'll last!

I've had the same problem with a Peugeot Boxer and also a Fiat Ducato base models. The Peugeot was fixed at Crash Data but they were unable to repair my module in the Fiat. I had to buy a new one from Fiat at great expense. I think this is a design fault and very common.
Yes, and it's just reoccurred on my van. Going to have a moan at Fiat tomorrow!
Ideally you want to check the Alternator output underload at about 2000rpm with Headlights on Heater blower on full blast Heated mirrors on etc! It doesn't matter but you had the Voltmeter Pos + Lead on the Earth.
Yes, I couldn't check that in the drive, perhaps I need to get something to monitor the voltage when I'm driving.
@@BobEarnshawMoHo wedge the probes in the Battery and just rev up the Engine! Or use Crocodile clips. Dint have to go any where. Potentially you could fit a Volt meter gauge somewhere? Easy to do!
In the owners manual it says to take it to your dealer and get your wallet out😢😢
Probably in the long run by the sounds of it.
hi bob brilliant video ,,i have been dreading the air bag light ,,very common flt on motorhome fun ,,dont think I'm as worried now ,,as you have showed us what to do ,,,thanks
Fortunately we've got the Bailey for the Scottish trip. I'll watch your awning video a little later. 😊
@@BobEarnshawMoHo Oh yes, you did mention that in the video. It’s off your mind now though 👍🏻
Thank you. This video was very helpful
My airbag light lit up, I think due to a voltage drop. It remained on for 2 or so weeks and many starts, but then the issue resolved itself.
Hopefully it won't reappear. My understanding is it can be caused by low voltages especially when starting the engine.
well done guys you did good thanks for the video.
Had it happen to me to on my ducto 2016
Very helpfull Bob. I've heard about this issue bwfore, but good to get refresher. I really hope the error code truely enables CrashData to determine that a reset will sort it kr if the module is really defective and needs to be replaced. Thank you for thix very informative video!!
I suspect that the only way they will know is if the reset doesn't work.
Superb thanks mate 👍
Glad it helped
Doesn’t matter if out of warranty if it’s a manufacturers fault according to the consumer lawyer I listen to on LBC on a Friday night

Hi Bob don’t know if you are aware but the Motorhome and Caravan club are offering another fuel card 3p off of diesel it’s called Coco+ (Uk Fuels). Thanks for videos👍
Yes, I tried the last CMC fuel card just before that closed down. I get 3% off fuel at Sainsbury's and 1% elsewhere by using by a UW cashback card.
Resetting them doesn't fix the problem. Had mine reset at Crashdata and it failed again some months later.
Yes, same happened to me four months later.
I had a long fruitless conversation with Fiat, they won't admit it's a safety issue.
Just be aware Crash Data offer NO warranty with this £84 repair, I went down this road and 11 months later it was on again, persist in complaining to (in my case Peugeot) manufacturer and I got a new module for free.
Thank you for the useful information
So presumably the module thinks the vehicle has been in a crash???
Crashdata say it it can be caused by a low battery. I think it fills the module's memory with rubbish data.
Sorry to hear that.
I tend to agree, if it's so common, there should be a recall on safety grounds.
@@BobEarnshawMoHo Yes quite sure the manufacturer's are quite aware of this problem but prefer to turn a blind eye to it and not open a floodgate of recalling.
When it happened to me I needed a whole new ECU
