What an incredibly and beautifully designed car. It’s a work of art that no other American auto maker could match during that time period and since. Awesome car.
This is a killer car - absolutely gorgeous in 1978, and thankfully someone preserved its originality right up to date so we can all lust over its beauty -
Gorgeous mint condition Toronado, same age as me. She definitely a super rare model/trim. I would've love to hear the engine. With those low miles, that motor is still an infant.
Absolutely gorgeous car. Elegant classy. Nothing like today's crap. I had I think it was a 82 olds 98 2 door and it was a boat with rear tire skirts and landau roof burgundy with pillow top seats. It was my grandma car she got brand new and left to. I loved driving that car it was a huge car and drove like I was on a cloud. Love to have another one day.
The XR‘s were originally intended to have power T-tops but they could never get them watertight enough to be viable so instead Oldsmobile included a moonroof as part of the package. Interestingly the prototype model with the power T-tops was featured in the dealer brochure even though it never made it into production.
The High Gear Economy Gauge above the Fuel Gauge was Unnecessary but Hilarious, You can watch the Fuel Gauge going down while you are driving. 8 MPG from the 200 HP 455 Big Block was smooth and quiet but by 1978 was choked by power robbing Exhaust and low Compression ratio dish style pistons.
I know this isn't the best generation of Toronado, but MAN, just LOOK at how gorgeous it is. It may look a little more like a customized Cadillac Eldorado of the day than what you think of when you picture a Toronado, but I would take this over the Eldorado of that era any day. It's got class in multiplicity like no other car from that time except maybe the boat tail Riviera from the previous generation. You saw Eldorados all over the place then. This car in contrast was a real treat to see once in a great while. That exclusivity factor made it feel like a more special car than the Eldorado. That rear window and the absence of quarter windows next to the B pillars make it SO unique too. I used to draw concept cars with insanely shaped windows like this. In case you didn't know, the way they made it was with a score line in the glass and then a heated wire would go into that channel and they would bend the glass while the channel was hot so it did that wrap around effect.
It actually was a very good car as far as reliability goes and comfort. Absolute supreme luxury. The problem, of course was the emissions and that slowed these big cars down as far as horsepower, but they truly were the pinnacle of luxury this year and in a couple of previous years.
what, !! no freakazoid jungle muzic pounding in the background? no loud mouth over-using absolutely every cliche adverb in the book? nice. subscribed. keep it up. where in OH? thank you.
I remember seeing those on the road when I was young. Very few were produced it's a shame there is not a narrative to go with this video. I'll bet most people have no idea this car was even produced. Also very very interesting this car had every option you could buy with the exception of one based on what I could see and it's very unusual that it would not have this and that is a tilt telescopic wheel it has only a tilt wheel and that almost looks like the wrong steering wheel I'm sure I am wrong it looks like it came off an Oldsmobile Cutlass but that was probably the base wheel without ordering the telescopic option
Wow! Back in the day I owned 4 of these. 1972....green with a hood that was a mile long. 74,76 and a 77 like this one without the wrap around rear window. A brougham. My favorite car! That's something considering I now own a S class.
i saw the exact color combo in armstong illinois close to same year as model year when a hawaiin group came to visit us. i thought i was in love with the hula girls until i saw this car.
The back window WAS awesome, entire side & rear designs , perfect, but, the front grille ruins effect by not making grille bars full height! And, I remember these as first higher 3rd (&4th) brake lights. I was so inspired @ time that I put two 3rd brake lights, left & right, inside my 1968 T-BIRDs rear window, operating as brake lights with my sequential taillights. JR
That's all this car was. Actually this was a poor man's Eldo. However this car is an exception from the aspect of being collectible at least among the cult Oldsmobile people personally I love it
@@bronxhistory2051 yes I realize the shell and the dash etc are different, but the basic undercarriage and basic suspension is what I'm referring to. They are sister cars.
I see them on your page nice I have one too a 76 white burgundy top and burgundy inside but my back window isn’t like this one I friggin wish it was tho
i love the first gen cars and the 79-85 cars. Man these cars have a look only a mother could love. Guy prob ordered it thinking it would be the next body style and was like.....fuxk this thing is ugly....put it in the garage get it away from me!!!!!! Unbelievable preservation here!!!
The Toronado from 71-78 was a hideously designed land barge - nothing goes together, randomly out of place styling that doesn't flow. Same thing with the Riviera and Eldorado from 73-76 - I never cared for them.
@ $1.80 /gl. gas you could still afford to drive this 6-8mpg city 12mpg hwy car the week before FB took/stole the office. Today, only 18 months later, fuel @ $8 /gl. It's gotta be hard to even give this car away. Beautiful car, I wish i could have had one.
this car is INSANELY gorgeous !! ... i want it !!
Hard to believe something that beautiful once roamed the roads!
What an incredibly and beautifully designed car. It’s a work of art that no other American auto maker could match during that time period and since. Awesome car.
LOVE the silver color. 70s hard edges, true old school cool
This is a killer car - absolutely gorgeous in 1978, and thankfully someone preserved its originality right up to date so we can all lust over its beauty -
Absolutely gorgeous.. they don't make luxury cars like that anymore. Wish they would bring those cars back.
Now THAT is a total and complete stunner, indeed!!!!!!!!
The rear glass is stunning and the rear bumper design is beautiful its plush seats are the best

Stunning! That back window is one complex piece of glass.
THIS CAR TRULY IS A THING OF AWESOME BEAUTY! 💥💥💥💥 UNBELIEVABLE!
And now....a moment of silence...😄 Very well done video, beautiful car....I like the pauses so you can appreciate it unlike some videos.
My favorite. My parents owned one. Same year. Fantastic car.

My Parents bought Toronados at this time through 91. Great cars. Especially this year.
Some people my age ( 50 ) still dream of Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini etc. I dream of things like this and always have.

That is the most gorgeous thing I have ever seen.

Gorgeous vehicle!
Straight off the showroom floor best one in the country👍👍👍👍👍👍🇺🇸 really nice
I would take this gem over a lamborghini or ferrari any day this car is absolutely stunning
Wow! Even the clock works:)
amazing !! huge car....
Thats a Stunner!!!!
My dad had a 74 midnight blue with a white top was a great highway car !
I could be mistaken, but I thought they were marketed as the XSR when they came out. I remember them and this roof was rare.
XST, I was remembering.
Nice car looks great
WOW!!!!! BEAUTIFUL!!!!!
Gorgeous! I wonder what it sold for?

Ahh, the bad old days, when a big block V8 was considered powerful when it made 140HP!
Ah more like 180 hp to 210 during this time.
Gorgeous! XS...excess?...Not every car on the road looked the same!!
78 was last of the “Tanks “
Is this gorgeous car still for sale? If it is,how much are you asking for it?
Is this beautiful tornado for sale I want to buy it
i had 2 a Burgandy '73 & a Baby Blue '75 which was shown the other day here about was is asking price just rough -
this is a very quiet video?
My dad used to say that Toronados were, “eldorados for engineer types”. Never truer than with this particular model. Nifty and ugly in a nice way.
👌🏅👋👋👋
No ?? Narration ??
OMG.
OMG
Sadly in 79 the Tornado basically became the rebadged Eldorado.
That's all this car was. Actually this was a poor man's Eldo.

@@bertram46 yes in that aspect your 100,% correct.
Tear out the 403 & throw in a 455 with dual exhausts.

Try elected to the office. And the Pres. isn't the cause of higher prices for fuel. Try not to be so bitter.
The Caprice / Impala coupes from that era where much better looking.
True, the XS was rare & this is an incredible example but boy was it hideous, not beautiful like the standard opera windowed Tornado
