People hike up steep trails up there for hours at a time at that altitude. We camped at 13,500 once for about 14 hours on another high pass. It took several hours for mild altitude sickness to set in (headache, vomiting).
Variometer, tells the current Rate of Climb of the aircraft, goes from high to low tone High being +ve low tone being -ve climb rate the higher the faster +ve the lower the faster the -ve
