    Thank you. This was all super helpful. I took a class and they just went over basic safety like you went over in the first 30 seconds, but they didn’t even show us how to operate the gun. I even asked when we went up to shoot and qualify for conceal carry and it’s like they didn’t understand me when I asked how to operate the gun (like the slide for example). They just did everything for me and didn’t explain.

      I also took a first time class and it was sorely lacking. The instructor read back from the book. He did demo a variety of side arms and we got hands on but there was no practical instruction. For example, there are easy and safe ways to handle the slide so round chambers and ejects every time. He also failed to mention never to slam slide on empty mag. He failed to mention to never flip the cylinder closed in a revolver. What I got out of the class was experience handling controls with other people present and the extreme need for safety.

    This is a fantastic video series for beginners! Thanks for making these! I'm going to show these to my wife and other friends who are beginners. Quick and easy to understand very basic information. I sometimes forget that some people don't know these skills. You should also do a video on the AR15, a bolt gun, and pump shotgun. I think those are all common platforms people should also learn.

    Nice job...should add a bit about the round in the chamber; new shooters seem to forget this. Also might add a bit more about what it means to have your finger off the trigger...that means finger out of the trigger guard (the Army standard is that you cannot see any part of the index finger from the weak side of the gun...a little extreme but new shooters get it). Great series!

    I started Revolver shooting 3 years ago and what helped me the most oddly enough was remembering Karate lessons when I was a kid and a teenager and just punching the gun out and staring straight down the sights. In Karate class we were taught to hold our punch out and to turn our punching arm into an immovable iron bar and someone would try to push our arm up or down and we had to keep it perfectly straight or do push ups. I applied this to my Revolver shooting with breath and trigger control and my shooting improved 97%.
    A Karate Chamber punch really can stop a knife attack with my Smith and Wesson in my hand!

    I am coming back into fire arms after a 20 year absence. I have plenty of experience with long guns and REVOLVERS...I recently acquired my first semi auto hand gun (Shield 9mm). I am fine with how to use them it is just.....I am totally unfamiliar with what the best value HP 9mm SEMI AUTOMATIC rounds on the market that function best out of a Shield 9mm.
    When it comes to hand guns I can rock a .357 Magnum revolver all day. But boy has the neighborhood I live in gone down hill. Renewed my CCW permit for EDC. I currently practice at the range with 115 grain Federal non HP's and they work MUCH better than I thought they would. But they still tend to just keep on going. Even legally on vast gun club open fields.
    I did NOT expect this kind of performance out of a 3 inch barrel 9mm. In a life or death EDC situation I am afraid I will X the attacker and X whomever may be behind the attacker. Advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

    I thought this was an excellent video for new pistol owners.
    Some things I would add is before you buy your first pistol make sure you've handled it at the store. Feel the weight of it, the difficulty of the slide, the trigger pull, etc. Make sure the gun fits you well. Sure, you can get used to just about any pistol, but for your first pistol you should go with something that fits well out of the box.

    Great video. I especially appreciate that you emphasized on the safety. One piece of advice: since you are teaching viewers about muzzle direction control, you might want to demonstrate the safe way. In your video you have pointed the gun at different directions before checking if it's unloaded and during checking. I understand that you know that the gun was unloaded. But new gun owners would pick up what you did and make lethal mistake. Keep up the good work. I enjoy your videos very much.

    BUT, trying to teach the youth of today?
    I gave up years ago! They simply do not want to PAY ATTENTION and seem to not want to understand just how DANGEROUS guns (and power tools!) can be when mishandled!

    • @LuckyGunner
      @LuckyGunner  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Depends on the gun. Some guns it's not really a problem. Others, like 1911s, letting the slide close without stripping a round from the magazine to slow it down a bit can cause damage to the internals. You'd have to do it a lot, though. Either way, it's generally considered a rude thing to do to someone else's gun, and probably not a wise habit to get into, but not a problem to do it occasionally.

    Good video. I thought the bit where you put your finger in front of the hammer to decock it was a bit much though. Unless your hands are compromised in some way, you can easily decock a revolver with one hand. Just am the gun at the floor while doing it. Also, do you prefer traditional speedloaders or jetloaders? My dream revolver would be a S&W .45 Colt/ACP carrying .45 Super rounds with full moon clips. My woods carry would be the same gun, but with .45 Colt +P+ hard cast loads.

    WARNING LEFTIES! I followed the racking instructions at 4:26 and got a round in my eye. Fortunately, it was a plastic practice round, but it still hurt for a day. I am a beginner and followed the instructions without question. If you hold the pistol parallel to your body as instructed, the round discharges toward you, not away. This is very bad advice for lefties and dangerous. My handgun and the handgun in the video are manufactured for right-handed people; unfortunately this is also right-handed advice.

    Someone told me that they put the magazine in and rack the slide and put it away. But my question is if the slide is racked for a long time is that okay for the gun?

      It’s fine to leave a gun loaded for a long time, but there’s a lot of debate about the magazine spring. General consensus seems to be “it’s fine”

    When you put away the pistol why do so many people they put the slide back into original position but they pull the trigger? Why they pull the trigger?

  • @lunelilyonrunescape
    @lunelilyonrunescape 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    For science, will someone confirm that I have this correct? If:
    (1) You start with a fully unloaded gun (no magazine inside, the slide is locked open so you can visually inspect the chamber, and no cartridge is inside the chamber).
    (2) You release the slide so that the gun is closed / looks like a normal gun ready to fire.
    (3) You insert a full magazine.
    At this point, true or false: the gun is NOT loaded and will only click if you pull the trigger, because there is no cartridge loaded inside the chamber--you still have to either push the slide release button or rack the slide in order to load a cartridge/bullet into the chamber from the magazine.

    • @iosonoi.7132
      @iosonoi.7132 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is correct. There is one flaw in your question, however. In point number two that you wrote you say have already released the slide. So if you insert the magazine while the slide is already forward, pulling the slide release does nothing since the since the slide (taking your number 2 point into account) is already forward. In your example, with an already forwarded slide, after putting in a magazene, you must pull the slide back to load the gun.

    • @lunelilyonrunescape
      @lunelilyonrunescape 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Iosono I. Ahaaaa, got it!! So using the slide release isn’t what loads the gun, per se-what loads it is the act of the slide moving from back to forward while there’s a cartridge in the magazine. And you can only create that motion using the slide release IF/WHEN the slide is locked back; if it’s already forward, the slide release doesn’t do anything.
      So in order to load the gun after step 3, I would have to “rank” the slide, right? (Forcefully pull it back, and then let it snap forward again?)

    • @iosonoi.7132
      @iosonoi.7132 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lunelilyonrunescape thats right. The slide lock ( sometimes called slide release) does not load the gun. It only allows the slide to move forward if it has been locked back.
      What actually loads the gun is the backward and forward motion of the slide.
      Pulling the slide back creates space for a new round to move up and the forward motion pushes this new round into the chamber.
      At this moment the gun is considered loaded and ready to fire. This ready-to-fire state is often called being "hot".

      @@lunelilyonrunescape well i saw from your writing style that you have analytical personality like me so it was easy for and fun for me to break it down for you:)
      If you have other questions I would be happy to answer them.
      One more thing about slide lock/vs slide release.
      People use these terms interchangably, but they are actually specific terms that shouldn't be interchanged.
      They both do the exact same thing (lock the slide back) but the name refers to how the user is inteded to actuate them. The practical difference is the slide locks are stiffer to pull down and slide releases are easier to pull down.
      The gun in this video has a slide lock, meaning its not intended to to be pulled down to release the slide forward (although it does not damage the gun to use it that way). It can be difficult to to pull them down so th better method is to slightly pull back and the slide goes forward.
      These mechanics work the same for a slide release, its just really easy to pull down the release. An example of this are 1911 handguns.
      Honestly, I wish all guns had slide releases

    Wait, you went from checking to be sure the chamber is empty to "after you've cleared the chamber" without explaining how to clear it if there's a round in there?
    Does the round just pop out? Do I need to tilt or shake the gun? What if it doesn't fall out? Do I need a tool to extract it?
    This may seem like a really stupid concern, but it's honestly one that causes me the most anxiety about going to a range for the first time... jamming is the next thing but one I hope to learn about in one of your next video's... that really freaks me out!

      Bill, if there is still a round in the chamber, make sure your finger is off the trigger, the gun is pointed in a safe direction and rack the slide back all the way, the round should be extracted just like if it fired.

    • @up2specks978

      Bill Scott remove the magazine out of gun, when you pull the slide back the round will either fall through the mag well out the bottom or extract out the side. There’s no way for it to go through the barrel unless you squeeze the trigger and fire the round. Which is what you don’t want to do!

    • @FBIAGENT725

      Choosing a lower or higher grain weight isn't really important for self defense or casual shooting. Generally you should go with something that is proven, for example 124gr HST, but it isn't a high priority unless you're doing something like long range precision shooting.

    Ok, so this may be a bit nit-picky, but isn't the first rule "Treat all guns as if they are loaded until you have personally verified that they are not"? How else would one inspect them and/or clean them?
    Also, I never knew that one should not let the slide go forward full force if the gun is empty, thanks for sharing that (I actually think there may be different opinions on that). Is it okay to let the slide go full force if one has snap caps and/or dummy rounds in the magazine?

    • @LuckyGunner
      @LuckyGunner  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I personally don't care for that particular wording of rule 1. If you have verified that a pistol is unloaded, what is the new set of rules you're using to determine what it's okay to do with an unloaded gun? Does that set of rules also include not pointing the gun at anyone? If you point a gun at me and tell me it's okay because you've just verified that it's not loaded, I'm not going to be too happy about that. It gets complicated quick, and I think it can easily lead to complacence. If you need to do something that seems like it's a violation of rule 1 (like dry practicing or disassembling a Glock), you do it as if you believe a bullet is going to come out when you press the trigger -- always a safe backstop, and finger off trigger when not absolutely necessary.
      You can let the slide go if you've got snap caps in the mag.
