Two things with Comcast from a longtime Comcast customer.
    1. They rarely give discounts.
    2. When you call the toll-free number, you are dumped into an automated queue, where you have to answer a series of questions so they can direct your call to the proper rep. Only after completing this do you get to speak to a human. If you do not encounter this when you call them, it is not Comcast.

The most important thing to identify scams is the need to pay using a gift card. No legitimate company requests gift cards as payment. But scammers need that form of payment because all other ways to get the money are easily traced back to them. Gift cards break the chain making tracing the money incredibly difficult.

    • @Ihileath
      @Ihileath ปีที่แล้ว +68

@@kenludlow7391 By the time they are asking you to pay for gift cards, they've probably already asked for identifying information about you that they can sell to other scammers or use for other scam attempts. @@andrewvelonis5940 You do not have to bring creativity like them. Just give them some bogus data when they ask for personal info, act like you have no clue. Usually the funniest things just come up as you talk with them. Stalling them for a minute is better than hanging up, as you will occupy them and that costs them money, both actively in hours and passively in lower "sales".
If you have the ability to setup some vm(virtualbox is free - never let them access your main pc), install some old windows(no need to license that, trial is just fine), with some browsers and random freeware. Just like some rarely used pc. Take a snapshot, so you never have to reinstall and are able to wipe the scammer from the vm with two clicks, after you are done. Then make them do their stuff and act like they will make a fortune on you. Slightly interrupt them, i.e if they use a browser, press "ctrl w" to close the tab.
The last one who "sent me to the router" to "get the serial number", while he installed teamviewer as his backdoor, became very anxious. Downloading and installing took minutes on my "old" computer and he had to come up with more excuses. That idea just came up as I saw, what he was up to.

This elderly person immediately knew it was a scam, but they had seen some scam bating videos in the past and thought they’d try their hand at it despite me trying to get them to hang up. Anyway the scammer managed to get this person confused enough by asking them things more rapidly than they could make up answers-they weren’t that quick to begin with. They let the name of their actual bank and their mother’s maiden name out before I finally got them to hang up. The scammer kept calling back too and I had to stay close to this person to make sure they didn’t pick up again.
Please don’t engage these scammers unless you have a clear plan and experience that Kitboga and others like him have. Just hang up or, better yet, don’t answer unknown numbers. All you do is tell them there is a living person behind the number and they’ll sell your number to every scam center and bombard you with 20 calls or more a day.
They are getting smarter and more percistant. Heck, this one almost fooled Kitboga. It was only by sheer luck he caught it.
Be vigilant, and make sure your loved ones are too.

It was the exact same thing as this Xfinity scam and the phone number they provided in the message was not a T-Mobile care number. They knew her name, the fact she was holidaying in Florida, her husbands name, her husbands health issues. And so the email was very convincing. My mum was ready to go out and get gift cards for her before I told her to call the organiser and check with her if she really needs help. If there's a legit discount, they'll have it. And if, heaven forbid, she does take the call - if they ever ask for gift cards for payment, hang up and block the number. Luckily, my mom listens. And she's even taken the extra step a few times of reporting the information directly to the companies. I've also sent my fair share of spam mail to various fraud departments. Unlike the typical refund/gift card scam, this one sounds more easily manipulated... All of the setup are made professionally, and the amount that they ask isn't something so ridiculous like other scammers, a comcast plan starts at 60 bucks and half that is merely 30... And it tops usually at 300 ish bucks which is what Kit has... So their range is 30-150 bucks, unlike those who asked 500-1000 bucks in a single call.

Ahh, so that's how the scam goes with the discount thing. I used to get the 50% discount calls about a service I wasn't even signed up for (probably FIOS but my memory is trash). A quick google gave me the results of "it's a scam" and I went on with my life. Lately I've gotten them again, this time for Comcast, so either the scammers decided to try a different company or have been able to figure out I do actually have Comcast.

While you've had a lot of scammers give excuses why you can't tell Target why you want their gift cards, then explaining why you can't tell their "promotional partner" the reason was new to the palate 😂

Sometimes the scammer will look up your address to see if it's real. Or to check if you own an expensive house so they'll ask for an appropriate amount from the victim.

The scam lead up was pretty sophisticated to end up with, - you need to buy Target gift cards.

So not only would someone be out the money they give the scammer but then they would lose their Xfinity services by thinking they don't have to pay for 6 months. That's crazy

    • @jwenting

Not XFinity but another cable provider but my parents once didn't pay for cable for several years, they didn't realise it was still connected as they were using satellite.
Then when they found out and called to cancel the cable company thought to send them a bill for more than 5 years of unpaid service.
They'd bought the house and cable shouldn't have been connected, but the previous owner had failed to cancel (or more likely had canceled and the cable company had messed up, that happened to me a few years later with the same cable company).

Gotta admit I had a similar moment. Got a msg on my phone saying that my utilities were going to be cut off due to non-payment. The utility was on auto-pay so I called the number they provided to find out what was going on. I'm told that they had replaced my analog meter with a digital one and that I owed them $600 for the new meter. I told them I didn't have $600. They asked if I had $200. Again I said no. They replied by saying "Well then, you're in trouble" and hung up.
It was at this moment that I realized something didn't make sense because never had I heard of someone from any customer service dept responding like that. I called the utility, verified that it was a scam, and gave the number the scammers were using to the utility.
