Guitarist Jan Akkermann is a raging volcano of improvisational excellence
True Dutch Masters! They made my youth so much happier!
To who ever requested this to Rory, may you live a long and fruitful life.
Jan Akkerman is a great guitarist, the group his a Dutch prog group, Thijs van Leer, was the yodeler, flautist, keyboardist, whistler, talented musician, Pierre van der linden the drummer is great ;they had several hits like "Sylvia" or the instrumental "Love remembered" their album Moving Waves is really good!
The song was actually over 6 minutes long but the tv company only gave them 4.5 minutes to perform. Rather than cutting verses, they sped up. This was played a lot on pirate radio stations
This is a myth that has been around for years, but it is not true. Focus used to perform it fast live between 1972-1976
@@Elias_Veine_Wiigwhat is wrong with a good myth 😂
this is freakin' awesome !! was not expecting the flute ! 🤣🤣
Vague memories of this on rock radio. So much better to watch and see who does what. Yodeling Amish-bearded guy showing off on keys. But wait! Flute!! Now whistling 😄 And everyone else just deep in it, playing their asses off, stone faced.
😄😄😄
This was a big hit when I was in Junior. High. Still hilarious.
Great reaction Rory , you were in hysterics most of the time !! It is very funny and the more you play you observe how outrageously talented the band is as well !!
I remember when this song came out. It was a lot of fun and indicative of the time of experimentation. Europeans had their own style. I don't recall if this group had any other memorable songs but this one takes the cake.
The first reaction when Thijs Van Leer starts with the vocals is usually the same every time - First, eyes widen, then jaw drops, then big smiles and laughter. This performance brings JOY to almost everyone who hears it.
The band had to fit the song into a limited time slot for the show. Rather than cut anything in the song they just sped up the tempo. Absolutely mental.
It's only about 40 seconds shorter than the album version
I USED TO HAVE THIS 45 RECOORD CRAZY 🤪 BUT VERY AWESOME!! I THOUGHT THEIR NAME WAS HOCUS POCUS. 🤔 THE B SIDE WAS CRAZY TOO!! LOVED YOUR REACTION RORY 💙 AND THANK YOU DAVID FOR THIS CRAZY REQUEST!! 🤪 🩷🔥🤘✌️
This was a bit of a novelty track at the time but brought them huge attention. The song features spectacularly in the movie Baby Driver. Their music albums from early seventies are terrific.
❤❤❤❤
the funiest bit is when he's trying to whistle and straining to get the note out !! 😂😂😍😍🔥🔥
No one EVER comes out of this more unhappy than they went in..fact
Waiting for the first reactor to just take a sip when the jodling start 😂 spray away 😂😂
Focus were a brilliant band, this song is sort of an outlier (comical for obvious reasons) but they had some beautiful albums and songs. The back story to this perfomance was they needed to fit this into a condensed time frame so they just sped the song up... Jan Akkerman is god on guitar.

Some of it sounds like punk. Maybe an influence.
ONLY standing O EVER on Midnight Special up until then. Also, this was played in a much faster tempo due to the fact that SNS wanted them to cut the song and the band refused. So they increased the tempo
Thijs Van Leer singing. One of the best ever rock guitar players, Jan Akkerman on the lead...
I thought you did this one already. A perennial on every rock stations top 100.
ok maybe top 500 i forgot what my radio station used to do
no , am sure he would have remembered !
The Midnight Special tv show would give them another couple minutes so they sped the song up and it was awesome 👏👏👏☮️

thjis van leer truly crazy funny like me
3:09 Biden gaffe?😂
Please don't forget your commitment to Talk Talk mate. You asked for people to leave some titles for you on the 'Living In Another World' live video. If you take a look, you'll find that plenty of great songs are there for your delectation. Cheers!
you know what would fit really well in the schedule?
a cosy late night kenny vs spenny session.
I hate this song. Rock music and yodelling? What a horrible combination! 🙄
it's a brilliant combination in fact , agree with Rory , unique song , fire !! 🔥🔥
@@treasuretrove7081 I'm truly glad that it works for you. Unfortunately, it's always rubbed me up the wrong way!
fair enough !! @@Owlstretchingtime78
F*** off!! It’s the best song EVER!!!
@@Elias_Veine_Wiig A bit strong for just an opinion, don't you think?
Prog rock = progressive rock.
Is yodelling dutch ? In a word , no but Alpine yodeling was a longtime rural tradition in Europe, and became popular in the 1830s as entertainment in theaters and music halls. In Europe, yodeling is still a major feature of folk music (Volksmusik) from Switzerland, Austria, and southern Germany and can be heard in many contemporary folk songs, which are also featured on regular TV broadcasts.
And yodelling also made its way across the Atlantic, into American country music.
Some of the best yodeling I ever heard was by the lead singer of a group from Hawaii called Puna Luu Blend in their great cover of the old standard She Taught Me How To Yodel
