I actually went out and bought a plastic owl and placed it in my cherry tree and still the birds are coming. These birds here in Canada are fearless. Great idea for the windmill. Thank you
Nicely demonstrated Mr Sam. I had the same problem with birds on my brassicas last year, but as long as the growing tip is still there the plants will recover. Andy
thank for the vid, when working with pop bottles theres a trick to make things easyer, just freeze some water in the bottle so that when cutting it does not bend, a bit safer when using a blade
LOL easy and fast, however I go the full monty, nothing beats the Portuguese bird scarer called the "Caravella" which is a full frame with a metal pot updside down and that is the drum which 2 balls or pieces of wood spining on a wooden shaft hit with . It is almost like the Slovenian one however the Portuguese made it 100 times more simpler and effective. I made 5 of those and sold them to some farms here in Canada. For the Canadian weather ( freak winds) they have to be metal blades.
CD discs work as well, tied on fishing line and left to dangle anywhere you can to scare birds off. Birds are scared of shine bright dangling things that swing around every which way!
Thank you so much. I'v made loads now. A suggestion..... I found the sellotape very difficult. Also tried staples, but they weren't great either. Now I use knitting wool, tied first to one spoke, then wound round the middle, in front and then behind all spokes. Keeps it firm - and looks quite pretty.
Mate., If that's your estimate of a centimeter,,,,,,your rulers broken. Great idea. Going to give it a go cos the pigeons are doing damage to the washing.
I am so glad I took Rickvanmann's advise and viewed your videos! You are very entertaining and I love your allotment! I also love Paul the Allotment god.
I came over here from Rickvanman as well and loved your videos, so I subb'd you. I am really thankful for this how to video for a bird scarer. I tried looking at others but could not tell exactly how they did it. You did a really good job at providing all the details. Thanks so much! Happy Gardening from Angie in AR, USA
Hi Mr Sam. Thought i would keep it formal under the circumstances (don't really know what that means but i do tend to go off on a tangent ) well thanks for your posts and advice. I have started on my wood pile which i show in my first ever TH-cam post yesterday.
I feed birds in my yard but don't like all my sunflowers being ravaged. would this keep my sunflowers from the birds but not scare them off from everywhere else?
Speaking of kale, I’ve just sow a few rows of kale seeds yesterday and when I cone to visit the site this morning there was a sign of bird scratches from it now, so I’ll just have to sow a few kale seeds again. Then make a bird deterrent device like old cd et al.
why don't any of you guys show them working in a garden or a yard. looked at a dozen videos, no one leaves the shop they work in....I want to see how the look as well as work...
+Roy Millegan Hi Roy its a while since I made them and the originals got lost and stolen in my move but I will show one in my next vid. Thanks for watching. Sam
Sorry to say but I have 6 of these I made 2 yrs ago around in a semi circle and I am sitting looking out of the patio doors at 6 pigeons wandering around looking for seeds dropped by the local house sparrows. If you still make them, a tip. Spokes from an old wheel are perfect to use for this as they have the thread and nut thing at one end and you cut the other bent end off. Put the bottle on, then a wooden bead, and bend the spoke just behind the bottle and bead. Then pop it in a bamboo cane which has been drilled down through the top.
Alternative to “wooden bead” is a second bottle cap with a hole in the center, positioned with its top facing away from the bottle, and retained in place by bending the wire as described above.
Sam - We have a large back yard with a Pool and trees in Nevada on a corner lot. The pigeons and blackbirds besides the usual robins and swallows are constantly in our yard. We want them to stay away, but keep the humming birds. Suggestions? Not a lot of grass, but some. more dirt and rock. The pool is the major attraction.
+Roy Millegan Pigeons like to land and walk so we usually use nets to keep them away but this is clearly not practical.Buzz tape may work,if you use the windmills you do have to move them everyday or they just get used to them.
Great to see how it is done Sam. The only extra bit of detail I'd love is on the wire used. It's such an important part of the update? Is wire hanger cut to size an option? Thanks again. Loved the updates from the start. Mossy?
Since my last comment I bought 4 solar powered gadgets that have magnetic or hook attachments and have placed them strategically around my balcony. They make a clicking noise that disturbs birds. This took a while to work because birds are stubborn and had been enjoying by balcony for a couple of years....ie creatures of habit. Eventually, months later I have far less a problem with birds although an occasional on or two still check my balcony out. Not surprising really as there are 100s of pigeons around my area with ignorant folks feeding them in park opposite from where I live......so those who don't know better will still turn up......but this is not their fav spot like it used to be thanks to these gadgets and cleaning after them is not such a big drama anymore.
thank you .....i will try this ,i like birds but they are driving our ten month old wild cat crazy he is inside laying on the windowsill and robins cardinals jays crows take turns flying really close to the window and get the cat crazy.i hope this works cause our little guy is doing his best to get tame ,we have a parakeet too the cat likes it ,but the wild birds might change that.
Here is a good tip get a rubber snake from Amazon less than 20 bucks tie it using fishing line on the top branch ,so it's visible between the second and top branches as the branch shakes from the wind so will the snake.....problem solved
Who the heck is nickin’ this mans bird scarers? How bad must a persons day be going for them to go and take another mans home made bird scarer? Fertilise my garden with them, I would!
I actually went out and bought a plastic owl and placed it in my cherry tree and still the birds are coming. These birds here in Canada are fearless. Great idea for the windmill. Thank you
Thanks, Sam. Love the editorials along the way....the fan works great. Made a couple and they scared flickers away. Used shiny tape on the blades.
I have saved lots of bottles of different sizes... to make cloches and as water dispensers etcetera. This idea is brilliant, thanks for sharing it.
Sparrows absolutely love chards!
Nicely demonstrated Mr Sam. I had the same problem with birds on my brassicas last year, but as long as the growing tip is still there the plants will recover. Andy
What crazy sorcery is this?! Love it! Going to give it a go a.s.a.p.
Loved the video, straightforward instructions and a bit of welcome humour ;8)
thank for the vid, when working with pop bottles theres a trick to make things easyer, just freeze some water in the bottle so that when cutting it does not bend, a bit safer when using a blade
Thanks for the idea. I'm getting tired of sweeping up the dirt the birds have been scratching out of my garden. Will give it a go...

Will definitly have a go at making a few, might even consider painting them in bright colours to make them more scarier cheers mate.

Very good tutorial! We have annoying pigeons and doves tearing our eaves apart! I'm making these! Thank you!!

Great idea I will surely try.
nice one i am putting in a one acre meadow from scratch and this will save some money ,better start drinking some cider
is the line a centimeter and a half or does he mean an inch and a half? it looks wider than a centimeter to me
Just made one , it works keeping crows and magpies from ripping up my lawn looking for leather jackets 👍
Finally an option I gon try it n let u know if it works
Im glad rick shared otherwise I wouldn't of seen your humorous videos thanks Sam. :)

Great series Mr Sam ,ive given you a mention in my last video.
Very cool. This and couple of dangling old cds should do the trick for birds. But what about squirrels?
Thank you now all i need is how to put on the PUSHOUTS OF THE CARAVAN HAVE YOU ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR A ELDERLY WIDOW?
Wire coat hanger can be used

chris spere hi Chris. Sorry to hear that. Try mixing them with other forms of scarers
Instead of a bead I used a button
Alternative to “wooden bead” is a second bottle cap with a hole in the center, positioned with its top facing away from the bottle, and retained in place by bending the wire as described above.
cool vid again keep them coming sam
Do you think a really big one would scare off cats and stop them taking a dump in my garden?
I have a huge problem with crows on our power line. Any ideas on where to put these to scare off those buggers?
Awesome! want to make them!

Nice bird scaring thing😀😀
Good idea
Good ideas thank you
? how about putting some uncooked rice inside to rattle around a bit... would that work?
Ur fool u will just attract more birds
Excellent you intelligent man
Will it keep the woodpeckers away ?
A good demo of effectiveness of this bird scare tactic would be a video of a bird getting scared and flying off.
brillant thankyou so much for sharing
Good idea I`ll try that

nice one mr sam, have big problem with crows, will give it a go, the buggers steal my duck eggs on our smallholding.
I like that idea,if I put dried barley in them it might scare all the cats as well.
Does this work for Hawks? Had one take my pet chicken 😭
thank you
You could put dried peas in it so it rattles and frightens the birds even more:-)
i will making a thesis like this can you help me sir
Great!!
Instead of using tape on the blades can't I just Staple them together?
plz also show how it actually kept away the birds.post a video on that.
hareramable 10 min blablablablablablablablablabla proof how it works nothing........

What is the name of the company? Thank you
can you post a picture of the solar gadgets and how to placed then on a balony....thanks
You could probably staple the bases of the blades together too
thank you .....i will try this ,i like birds but they are driving our ten month old wild cat crazy he is inside laying on the windowsill and robins cardinals jays crows take turns flying really close to the window and get the cat crazy.i hope this works cause our little guy is doing his best to get tame ,we have a parakeet too the cat likes it ,but the wild birds might change that.
thanks for sharing. kale netted...brassicas to be protected. The crows think they own this place.
Birds will soon make it their toy to play around!
After watching 60 sec of your video I got a water bottle, put a hole in lid, string a string thru lid and hung in the area and walaa
Why not just by 49 cent pinwheels?
You can buy a windmill from Poundland!
Here is a good tip get a rubber snake from Amazon less than 20 bucks tie it using fishing line on the top branch ,so it's visible between the second and top branches as the branch shakes from the wind so will the snake.....problem solved
Doesn't work for sparrows though😕
When you change scenes, that nose is loud and annoying. Good video, but can you make mine for me?
ok
Thank you. I’m trying to scare away a crow that keeps leaving bits of dead animals in the bird bath. Filthy.
Who the heck is nickin’ this mans bird scarers? How bad must a persons day be going for them to go and take another mans home made bird scarer? Fertilise my garden with them, I would!
