Iona has the charm, intellect and empathy to get the people she is interviewing to think it is a chat in the garden. As a result we get so much more. This was a brilliant 46 minutes.
I was a young policeman in Largs around 1973. My friend Robin Knox and I were on duty and dropped into Routenburn golf club. Robin was friends with Bob Torrance who was in the bar at the time. There was a guy hitting balls off the 1st tee up the hill to the first green and I asked what he was doing hitting balls in the dark. Bob said, “oh that’ll be Sam, don’t worry, all the balls will be on the green, we’ll pick them up in the morning. Sadly, Robin passed away in July last year 2023. He always had good things to say about Bob and Sam. They are local legends. I wish Sam well. He was a great golfer and a great commentator. We all thought he’d be the next Peter Allis. His admiration and respect for Severiano and his obvious sense of loss are so apparent here. Sam’s all heart.
I have no idea how every golfer/golf fan is not a follower of Iona. Heart and style collide in every video she makes. This is top level. Keep it up Iona!
Tears of joy watching this. Mr Torrance is the 1st pro golfer I ever met, the kindness he showed me has stuck to this day, a hero. As a young child at my 1st tournament I stood at the 18th green, children were asking for autographs, I had no idea what this meant but asked anyway, to my surprise Mr Torrance approached me and asked what he was to sign, I didn't have anything for him to sign and I froze. He very kindly went into his bag pulled out a golf ball, signed it a passed it to me, such a gentleman saving my embarrassment.
Simply put , what a brilliant video, full of emotion, tears ( any chat about Seve always does this) , the smiles, the cheeky grin, his twinkle in the eyes, the way Iona was speaking and asking the question with genuine interest, fantastically put together video, and to whoever chose the background music, spot on, perfect tempo, thank you for sharing this Iona ❤
Your greatest production yet, emotional, informative and to have Sam open up with all the memories was magical, what a character and hats of to you Iona, never interrupting, the sign of a great interviewer, you could see the immense respect you have towards Mr Sam Torrance. Magical
I adore that man. He stood and spoke to my wife and I on the Wednesday at the 2023 Scottish Open and you'd have thought we'd known him for years, he was so lovely. He even waved hello to us when we passed him 20 minutes later!
My goodness, what a wonderful video. It's lovely to hear him speak so candidly and with such emotion about his life, a great privilege. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much Iona. As I approach my 60th year, I often reflect on my 40 years of playing and watching golf. Sam may never understand that those of us who simply watch from the outside have lived lifetimes following the likes of golfers like himself. Whether as a player, captain or announcer, he's been a treasure. Thank you Sam.
could listen to Sam talking about golf in the 70,s 80,s and 90,s for hours....a great era for european golf and great characters that the game is missing today, God bless you Sam a true character of golf. Great vid Iona
Sam's autobiography was a favourite read a good few years ago and hearing him talk about things brings it all back. I was lucky enough to play at Woburn while the Senior British masters was on and I was behind Sam in the line for a breakfast bap, Sam took the last of the sausages and turned back to me, winked and said 'I hope you like Bacon buddy'. He is a true living legend and I could listen to him for hours, thank you for bringing him out like this Iona, your interview technique is incredible.
Absolutely sensational film,Iona such a great interviewer and Sam very humble, also very touching moments about seve, you can see how much he still means to people
An absolute legend is Sam Torrance! What a life he must of had in those old day's. A fine gentleman too! Thanks Iona, this one brought tears to my eyes
Hey Iona, I've followed your amazing progress and enjoyed every minute. I came in from a day of golf, takeaway in hand, checked YT & found this wonderful episode with Sam. I'm 68 & the memories thrown up by your interview brought back memories & emotions. I cried, I punched the air, I laughed, I cried again at Sevy's passing and throughout, your professionalism shone through. Hold your head high, magnificent, your not only learning your craft, you're nailing it & credit for a great production and edit. Your future is very bright, proud of what you have become after the disappointment of stopping playing, but I must say, still a force to be reckoned with out there. Take care of you & yours, God Bless.
Absolute class. Best one yet! I love the quote “worrying is the interest you pay on the inevitable”. Sam is an absolute legend and a gent and it shows in buckets. Bravo 👏
I’ve not used this word before when describing a TH-cam clip but that was … beautiful. Iona you’re an absolute credit to the game, I think I’ll grow old watching and listening to you. Sam you’re just a bloody legend and a genuinely decent man, there’s not many people I’d want to play a round with more than you. Thank you both.
Unbelievably good film. Two of Scotland’s finest. If broadcasters don’t build their future plans around you, then they are simply doing it wrong. Sam’s voice is iconic.
Sam is by far one of the great characters in the game. I followed him round gleneagles a few times and he was always brilliant to be around. His wife is also a fantastic woman. Very down to earth. Great video watching the two of you playing.
Iona, this is such a wonderful video, Sam Torrance is a proper hero of mine and this is such a heart warming and gentle interview it brought a tear to my eye. very well done
A magnificent interview Iona. Its a classic. Its full of emotion, wisdom ,humanity and the joy of what golf has to offer to those of us who love the game. It will be a challenge to surpass this interview Iona. Well done. Not a bad swing either!
Dear Iona Thankyou for these golf interviews They remind me of a simple time When golfers had time for people Without being surrounded by security And advisors. Wish the BBC would get back to the pro celebrity stuff again Golf is such a wonderful game It unites so many of us It’s wonderful characters Wonderful golf courses Lovely presentation And ofcourse you, Iona. A great interviewer Not to mention a good golfer A very talented lady. Best wishes John
Thank you Iona. What a super interview. This is a strange comment. I learned to play golf with my Dad starting about age 10. Cut off 3 wood and putter in his bag and if the course (Dalmahoy near Edinburgh) was quiet he would drop a ball for me. Holidays always near a golf course - Troon, North Berwick, Dornoch - same thing…drop a ball if quiet. And we went to several tournaments together. Sadly he died in 1972 when I was 17. To hear Sam talk about names from the past brings back so many memories. When Sam grew his mustache it was freaky how much he looked like my Dad and even his body shape and swing. Even his calm demeanor. Not in a weird way, but I followed Sam’s career. He was a favorite to follow along with dear Sevvy (all time favorite). After Dad died I carried on playing using some of his clubs! By the way I never grew taller than 5ft and am female. I didn’t get my own clubs until I was 22. Now retired and almost 70 I am still playing every week.
I have been a fan of Sam since the 70s, I have his autobiography, which he signed. I also used him as an example in training project managers to be good leaders, mentioning how he led Philip Price to beat Phil Mickleson and also his famous line in answer to “… the US have Tiger”, his response - “We have 12 Lions”. He made a mistake in one of his answers to you, about who was the best Ryder Cup captain, but that was due to modesty, he was the best. A great player, a great captain and a great man
This was my favourite guests you’ve had. What a fantastic man with amazing memories. Coming from the West of Scotland myself I felt a deep connection with him, but I suppose that is one of his greatest gifts, such a special person. Thank you Sam for the everything over the years. ❤
The quiet calm resonated by Mr Torrance is matched by the personality of Iona. This is developing into a must watch series, well done Iona and the production team, 1st class.
I've decided that by a fair margin this is the best golf channel. It never fails to relight that inner flame by focusing on the most important aspect. The love of the game. Everything else is a technicality. Thank you Iona. Please for the love of god keep doing what you're doing.
Sam Torrance: A golfing legend and gentleman. Though I missed his prime, I discovered him later, drawn by his resemblance to my father. His humility and kindness shine through in videos and interviews. Kudos to Iona for this excellent interview, part of an outstanding series. Great work by the entire production team.
What a great video. Brilliant questions from Iona about golf heroes in my era. Sam Torrance is a true Scottish legend and love hearing his stories. Golf has changed but not convinced it is better. Iona is a joy to watch and she will rise to the top of golf media.
What a beautiful man. I would so love to play a round with him and listen to every story he had to tell. Great interview Iona, you are exceptional at what you do. A true joy to watch.
The calm and chilled Sam Torrance with words of wisdom but for me Sam will always be remembered for the Ryder cup victory and Iona keep sending out these master class interviews.
Fabulous video. Stunning quality. What a guest, has always seemed to me to be a man of integrity and warmth, shines through in abundance. Thanks for the memories Sam. I’ll have a drink in the bin for you next time I’m at the belfry!
What a character Sam Torrance is and you can tell he has lived a full and fun filled adventure of a life. He may be getting old and with a few wrinkles but he still has that twinkle in his eyes and that mischievous grin. Respect to Sam - they just don't make characters like him nowadays.
Best guest by far. Sam Torrence was, is and always will be a classy classy guy and an absolute gentleman. Could listen to him and that voice for hours. Emotional man top as you can tell when he speaks of Seve.
Sam, what a man.!!! Every thing what golf should be about. I put him up there with the all time greats. We need this man with that voice at more tournaments.
Sam is such a top man, seriously humble and very likeable, had a great career and family etc but still speaks of others with such enthusiasm, would love to sit and grab a beer with Sam just to listen to his stories and kindness, awesome. And Iona, superb, what a great series.
iona ive just come across your channel and to drop on to one of my sporting heroes, well how lucky am i. I will be watching your others now such great interviews. as a former professional sportsman myself I often see interviewers that try and sensationalise events and never get the real story out or the feel of the person, may I say you do this admirably well and will be watching out for every interview you do from now on. I wish you all the best in your future and keep hitting them beautifully well just as we've seen in the video
I have loved and respected Sam ever since I started to play. As a man and a golfer. He along with Manual Lara opened our golf course at Roda Spain. As owners we had the privilege of walking very closely to them. He was amazing. It was a serious comp and yet he even allowed us to ask questions from the sidelines. This simple unselfish gesture has become one of golfing highlights in 40 yrs of playing. Sorry for the lengthy response, but wanted to pay my little tribute 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
What a beautiful video, I grew up watching Sam on the television in the 80’s ,with my dad. I’d forgotten what a legend he was, it was lovely to watch him, so full of emotion. Well done Iona, great interview.
Being a fool that takes himself too seriously, I really appreciate the elegance of Sam Torrance. Sometimes, I let a bad round get the best of me. But, I haven't played enough golf to be particular about how I play. An attitude like yours and Sam's helps keep me in line. Thanks!
What a great interview with an absolute gentleman.Sam was one of my hero’s growing up and hearing his reflection on life has a made a 50 year old man feel 10 years old again
What an absolute legend, Sam's emotions about seve showed how much he respected and loved him and I liked the tale about Lee Trevino who is my favourite golfer of all time, and I also agree that individual personalities thrived in that era, what a great man. Loved this one.
This is a piece of history, to listen to Sam recall his wonderful memories is priceless and incredibly special. Thank you Iona for bringing this out. x
What a privilege to watch & listen to Mr Torrance,to see the emotion when talking about Seve wow,he is an absolute gentleman & a treasure to golf. We could all learn from his humility. Great video Iona
I was lucky to be growing up as a teen during the 80s. As a proud Scot, Sam Torrance was the natural choice for boyhood hero, I just loved the man. On the bigger world stage Seve was the only man I held in higher regard than Sam. I witnessed the scene at the 18th in St Andrews when Seve won the Open, in what was unquestionably one of the finest Opens in history. What a privilege that was. A couple of years later I was serving Sam Torrance a pint as he sat in a wine bar I worked in in Glasgow. That was a privilege also. Superb interview & one that brought goosebumps watching Sam's fond memories of Seve, coupled with his pain at his loss. I wish Sam continued good health & have no doubt he'll continue living the great life he has already. ps Just got to the end, "sausage time" 😂 brilliant way to end a superb 45 mins.
What a joy, Sam a great hero of mine growing up in Fife golf was in your DNA, now in my 60's and having re discovered the great game after a 25 year gap. Keep up the good work Iona ❤
Well Iona what an absolute pleasure that must have been racking Sams brains two really proud Scots together talking about their love of the game ❤. Sam always wore his heart out his sleeve !!! Still remember the tears after he won his Ryder Cup!!!!
Thank you Iona. A wonderful production. Two extraordinary Scots. You have a real gift in bringing the best out in your interviewees . Can’t wait for the next instalment.
Superb … I had the privilege of meeting Seve twice on the same day … when I was working for Spalding Sports on tour …. I will never forget the hushed silence when he walked into the hotel restaurant …. He was a true gentleman on both times I met him and his sons and daughter … great memories and great times Iona ….
I feel like I have just spent an afternoon with a wonderful man, with a outstanding attitude to life. I played yesterday and struggled but Sam has inspired me to get back out there and keep going. I can't change yesterday but I can make tomorrow better, what a message. One of the best golfing shows I have ever seen on TH-cam.
had to watch this for 2nd time. Remarkable interview with a living legend. Thanks to Iona to help us all gain fantastic insight from this great stalwart of british golf.
Thank You Iona for bring Sam to all of us. I remember watching him in Ryder Cups but never knew much about him. What a very Humble and Gentle Man. I Love your videos and the content. All the Best!!!
What a truely moving video,I got emotional when he was speaking and reminiscing about the great Seve I had tears in my eyes. This is by far your best video Iona keep up the fantastic work from a fellow Scot
Hi Iona a late comment regarding your Sam Torrance interview it was great a very touching interview full of interesting bits and pieces you and your channel are totally amazing long may it continue and I hope one day on tv ? Why not sky or bbc would be mad not to take it up good luck Iona in all you do keep swinging and keep being you
Impossible not to warm to such a genuinely decent person. With his love of the game, natural wit, glint in his eye and his sense of mischief, Sam could read the phone book (is there still such a thing?) and it would be entertaining.
Iona, you've gone and done it again. What a fantastic video. Great interview and interviewee. Have always loved Sam and he's still a character to this day. Keep them coming! 👍
I’ve always loved listening to Sam’s dulcet tones and his stories are legendary. Iona is a pure gem. Beautiful young woman but an even more beautiful soul.
such a beautiful, relaxing and lovely video Iona- they just get better and better. Sam is such a decent, kind human being and its interviews and pieces like this that are the nuggets of joy and gold stuck in amongst the loud, in your face world of today- Top class
Iona has the charm, intellect and empathy to get the people she is interviewing to think it is a chat in the garden. As a result we get so much more.
This was a brilliant 46 minutes.
Agree with your comment, total class interviewer and interviewee, fab clip.
Lost for words again. Thank you Iona. Please don’t stop producing gems like this.

Nice story
Thanks for that Iona, great interview, I could listen to Sam's story all year, such a great man. 👍😊
Heard tales of Bob just teaching anyone and you could be the next lesson after open champions for pearls of wisdom.
What a wonderful story, Tom. I used to watch Sam play with my Nana and Papa when I was a kid :-)
I have no idea how every golfer/golf fan is not a follower of Iona. Heart and style collide in every video she makes. This is top level. Keep it up Iona!
The warmth and love radiating from this video is food for the soul. Brilliant.
Agreed. Genuine and humble. Learnt a lot from his Dad...and a wonderful human being all round. I salute you sir.
What an interview, thank you Iona, pure class. We all owe a lot to guys Like Sam, Seve, etc.
Tears of joy watching this.

💯
Sam Torrance is a class act on and off the golf course.
A wonderful storyteller.
They don’t make the likes of him anymore.
❤️🙏.x

Excellent show Sam, As a Scot I just love listening to your voice ..
This was utterly wonderful, thank you Iona, team and of course Sam
Unbelievably good film. Two of Scotland’s finest. If broadcasters don’t build their future plans around you, then they are simply doing it wrong.
Sam’s voice is iconic.
She may have too much substance, character and sincerity for today's "media". She's lovely.
This was probably the best interview and guest you could have picked Iona . Held me throughout the whole interview
Sam is by far one of the great characters in the game. I followed him round gleneagles a few times and he was always brilliant to be around. His wife is also a fantastic woman. Very down to earth. Great video watching the two of you playing.

To this day I cannot understand why Iona is not doing these for TV. Incredible once again.❤
Lucky for us she can do them for those who can find them on TH-cam.
Didn't think you could top the Adam or Butch episodes but this knocks them out of the park! A true Scottish hero and such a lovely man.
Sam Torrance: A golfing legend and gentleman. Though I missed his prime, I discovered him later, drawn by his resemblance to my father. Thank you Iona for bringing this out. x
What a privilege to watch & listen to Mr Torrance,to see the emotion when talking about Seve wow,he is an absolute gentleman & a treasure to golf. We could all learn from his humility. Great video Iona
Iona- thank you. Brilliant subject, brilliant interviewer, wishing it went on for a few more hours.
I dont know Iona at all, but I must say I immediately felt at home with this interview. Fair play to you girl and Sam Torrance is a legend😊
Both of you make us proud to be Scottish. Another warm and heart felt interview bringing out the essence of humanity. Well done.
Great career, great golfer, great story teller.
One of life’s good guys🏴
What a lovely film. Thank you. So many great memories.
Absolutely brilliant Iona, love listening to Sam, so genuine and any mention of Seve brings tears to my eyes.
This is brilliant. Wise & soothing. We need more of this in our world. Thank you.
What a well put together interview and video, captured memories and emotion of a well loved golfer. Well done Iona !
Great video as always. Love the interview bit, very natural and heartfelt. (OTRI community) keep up the good work Iona
had to watch this for 2nd time.
Iona.....best interview yet....do another one with Sam and get him to tell you some stories from yester year....it would be a block buster
What a lovely piece. Softly spoken, wonderful memories and you can feel the appreciation seeping out of him. Live life with a smile and a moustache
What a truely moving video,I got emotional when he was speaking and reminiscing about the great Seve I had tears in my eyes.
This is by far your best video Iona keep up the fantastic work from a fellow Scot
Listening to Sam talk Seve has me welling up, fantastic video as always Iona. Keep up the stellar work.
Hi Iona a late comment regarding your Sam Torrance interview it was great a very touching interview full of interesting bits and pieces you and your channel are totally amazing long may it continue and I hope one day on tv ? Why not sky or bbc would be mad not to take it up good luck Iona in all you do keep swinging and keep being you
What a great guy and interview. Loved watching him play when I was growing up, then see him captain Europe and then hear him on comms. Legend 🏴
Impossible not to warm to such a genuinely decent person. With his love of the game, natural wit, glint in his eye and his sense of mischief, Sam could read the phone book (is there still such a thing?) and it would be entertaining.
Thank you Iona. This is my favourite video so far. Sam is such a lovely, humble man. I could listen to him for hours on end!
What a treat for you being able spend time with him. Love his voice. Could listen to his commentary all day long.
This is golf TH-cam perfection. Thank you.
Fantastic memories and superb recall of details by Sam from Largs! That was magic Iona👍👍
such a beautiful, relaxing and lovely video Iona- they just get better and better. Sam is such a decent, kind human being and its interviews and pieces like this that are the nuggets of joy and gold stuck in amongst the loud, in your face world of today- Top class
