Cervelo P3X SUPERBIKE | Triathlon training 33 years after my last bike

  • Added a few bits to the P3X and took it out for a ride. My last road bike was in 1987, so this was a HUGE leap forward!
    I also address the obvious accusation that the bike just sums up the "all the gear, no idea" approach. Hint......it doesn't !!!

    Great bike mark! A few tips for you, 1) take the bottle off the front to begin with so you can see through the bars and allows you to adjust the bars and position far more easily. 2) you bike fit should get you in a better position but I suggest high sided arm cups like Kismit ones, being a bigger athlete like me this will help you push into the sides and create a stable platform in the bars. 3) enter as many local TT events as possible this will get you used to how to ride this at pace on some decent roads in a safe environment.
    Everyone giving there opinion on all the gear no idea are literally jealous that they don’t have it! They need go back in there hole! Loving the videos and supporting you all the way 👍

      mark lewis great to hear, I’m 6ft 5 and 100kg and just done 50 miles in 1:49:45 so I can tell you aero is KING! Once your more confident I would suggest a trip to see Matt bottrill so get yourself if the aero mindset and hide that big frame. You have great power already just need to get that to be the case over long distance. He changed everything for me so highly recommend!

    I've got that front hydration kit. It's very good except the little "sandwich box" section at the back of it is bloody useless and everything flies out of it. I took that off and it made it fit the bike better anyway.
    Also, it's not cheap but the gorilla cage on the back is about the only bottle cage I found that actually holds a bottle in. I remember doing an event about five years ago and there were folks with cheap bottle holders with there bottles flying out everywhere. It was like avoiding missiles. There is nothing worse than putting your hand behind you and the bottle is gone.

    Great video, as always!
    About the rock climbing analogy, I appreciate it is only an analogy by someone who does not do the sport. So there is no criticism here, just info.
    I am not great at the sport, but above average having 13 years of climbing and regularly climb 1000’+ walls.
    First, the rope ONLY serves to catch you if you fall and does not actually propel, push or pull you in any way. Some ropes do make falling a much more enjoyable experience though. Think falling into a pillow vs a bag of bricks (maybe not that hard, but you get the idea).
    Second, you should try climbing as a video series. It is a great balance of skill and strength and would make for some quality content.
    Keep up the great videos, and the open minded perspectives.

    Kudos. I spent a similar amount on my first road bike. No previous racing. Haters hated. 12 months later of structured training, 100W up on FTP, won my first 2 circuit races. Now a high level sprinter in the E12. No excuses can be made on equipment. It motivates me to train every day and stay consistent - most important.
    I see a lot of people who buy bikes and equipment, flaunt it on social media then 2 months later its on ebay. Think there's a big mind set difference here.

    • @BodieMoto
      @BodieMoto ปีที่แล้ว +1

      people really underestimate this, the confidence you get from training on good equipment is humbling, you know 100% theres is no one to blame but yourself. Even on a cheaper bike its "never the bike" but lets be honest some bikes are setups absolutely are slower. Knowing you have pro level equipment is such good motivation to grow into your bike

  • @Majestic1987
    @Majestic1987 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If it fits your budget, go for the best option available. Always. Worst case would be that you stop pursuing the hobby or sport further. Then you can at least sell the kit for a marginal loss. And if you keep going on, you will always grow into the kit, not hitting a wall at some point and being forced to throw out additional money down the line.
    That being said: I just bought a new roadbike that is also way faster than I am. But every time I see it, I have that craving to take it and go for a ride. That alone is worth every penny I spent. Makes me happy, and satisfaction strengthens habits.

    Hi Mark - love your channel; been following you for a while now with interest. Can I throw in my tupence worth - nothing wrong with all the gear, as long as you enjoy it 🙂 and it makes you happy! I've been doing tri for a long time - just one thing (sure you will have thought about it already). Get your new bike on a smart trainer and get used to bar set up, pedals etc - esp. after your bike fit where you will more than likely be, for a while at least, in a position that may or may not feel better / more natural for you. Forget about busy roads until you are super confident on the bike - give yourself every chance! One thought - sanctioned Ironman events are on closed roads, so you can concentrate fully on the bike, and not on dodging car drivers etc - and visa versa! Watch out for the stray pooches though!!! Enjoy the training, enjoy the kit - ignore the nay sayers. Ironman is a TT - it's you versus the clock; not everyone else around you ... All the best, Stevie 👍

    Another part of the point about the "all the gear.." comment is that it takes some time and experience to know what bike works best for you. I'm on my third aero-bike & I've learned from all three. One comment I was hesitant to make, is that the twitchiness you are experiencing might be due to the front angle and trail of the fork, you might be able to counteract this by moving the pads & extentions back, but then the bar is a long way forward and even further to reach & there doesn't seem to be enough adjust-ability in the pads either. So what I'm trying to say is that this might not be the optimum bike for you. Ideally one could train on the position, then get a bikefit, train on the new position, etc.., untill dailed in & then select the right bike from that combined with the experience of the desired handling caracteristics. It's a bit like shoes, it doesn't matter if you go for the highend shoe, it still needs to fit properly as well. I know of a few pro's who went a size up or down for various reason. Cameron Wurf for example went a size up last year for more stable road handling. Btw, you will find the aerobars more stable to hold if you angle the extentions more towards the horizontal. Then maybe once the fit is dialed in and you have the skills you can go full mantis on the public road. ;-) I better get off you case now, I'm starting to look like another twat in the internet. Best of luck.

    I've ridden bikes my entire life. My current ride cost £650 in 2014. It's likely I'll never change it. I'll also never enter any races or competitions or ride with a club although I have done charity rides every other year. It's not that I am unmotivated to improve, in fact my goal is to stay the same. What I mean by this is that the older I get [end of my 50's coming up!] the harder it is to beat my previous years times / distances. So consistency has become a moving target hard to keep up with!

    As a suggestion, to simplify your hydration of calories, carbs, electrolytes, protein, etc... look into Infinit Nutrition. No need to separate water from everything else. No need to eat or carry gels. 1 20oz bottle every hour and keep on chugging along. Give it a shot. I think you’ll be surprised. :-) As for handling, the base bar bull horns (where your brakes are) is best handling. The aero bars are only to be ridden with no traffic and DO NOT ride them downhill. It takes some balls to go aero as handling is minimal, and there’s no brakes without going out of aero.

    "All the gear no idea" - Christ I've heard that plenty of times. Essentially it comes down to "I'm jealous because you can afford a really nice bike and I can't". Then you get the "sub- Snipes", "why are you out on those carbon wheels in February"? - they'll chirp up at lights when you stop, "that will damage them". To which I would reply "that's okay I'll just buy some more".
    Plus, awesome kit makes you pull your finger out your arse when you're cycling. You can't be trundling along and some 12 grand bike.
    Although there is the downside... Put on a modicum of weight around the midriff and you don't show your face on the thing!
