@@booknerd8610 Awesome! I highly recommend Lost City Books (2467 18th St NW in Adams Morgan neighborhood). They have a great mix of new, used, and vintage everything. Some of my favorite used books were purchased here. Also, the books are all in great condition. Happy shopping.
So glad your maybe slump has been reversed. I enjoyed the quotes you shared this time. Augustown sounds so up my alley. I recently saw a video by Sunbeamsjess where she reviews another Kei Miller book, among others, and calls it speculative fiction. So maybe it isn't magical realism? It reminded me that you were talking about doing a video on that.
I can see why it's categorized as magical realism I think he's just challenging the way we think and how easily we write off other people's stories and ideas. I wouldn't be surprised if the author would prefer speculative fiction as the title. I've heard his other works are equally good. Glad you liked the quotes. And I just pulled the books to film that video tomorrow. VERY interesting results on this next one. It should come out in 2 weeks.
Glad you avoided the slump. I was in a bad slump in October, but November has been a fantastic reading month for me. Currently reading The Great Alone, which I know you DNF'd but I am hooked. 🙂
That's great! I'm glad it's a good month for you. That's always a relief after a bad reading month. I'm glad you're enjoying The Great Alone. I just really struggle with dark books sometimes, but I've heard good things about it.
I'm reading 'Gone' by Min Kym. It's informative about what it's like to be a child prodigy, being South Korean and what's it's like to have a Stradivarius stolen.
Augustown is on my list, and my library has a downloadable audio copy. I’ve never done that, but we’ll see. If I get an unexpected window of time I’ll add it - ever since _Braiding Sweetgrass_ I’ve realized there can be a great advantage to audiobook, where you get nuance or, in this case, dialect. I generally dislike dialect, have put off… is it Gaskell for that? though I don’t think the Jamaican one is particularly troublous one for me, still it would be lovely to listen to.
I definitely found it a bit difficult to read and that's despite being used to hearing the dialect and accent. But maybe that was just it, I'm used to hearing it.
I went to a showing of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera at the Detroit Institute of Arts in 2015 but if you want to view the show and information on the couple it's still on the internet if you google the DIA and Kahlo/Rivera. I read her diary and a couple of books but not sure if they would have enough information on their lives, also I bought the DVD for Frida. As always enjoy your videos and hope you have a wonderful week with your son and a Happy Thanksgiving. We are having turkey and ham...lol
Is the magic system in Warbreaker the same as in the Mistborn series? If it is, I was sure I'd never understand it, but then eventually I found myself wishing for certain metals to do certain things 😆
Nope, if I'm correct Mistborn is a metal based magic system and this one is color based. It's not really explained or talked about much. This book is definitely fantasy that is heavy on court politics more than anything else.
As short as Augustown is, I am reading it pretty slowly. (Going between audio and physical...sometimes both at the same time) I'm reading Born a Crime with my son at the moment also, and surprisingly the two books bounce off each other well. Well maybe not surprisingly in terms of colonial legacies in South Africa and Jamaica, but surprising that I just happen to be reading them at the same time without meaning to and it turned out to be a good combo.
Love that! It is a short book and is definitely one that I could see doing a slower read with. In some ways I was bummed that I was doing mostly audio for it as I felt like there were alot of things I wanted to make note of.
Good morning. Barbara Kingsolver received a lifetime achievement award at the National Book Award ceremony. I think her speech was wonderful. I think that you can probably still find it on TH-cam. Isn't that one of her first book? Have a nice visit with your son.
Afternoon! I did hear about that. Good for her! I'm not sure when this falls in line with the others. I've read two of her earlier works (The Bean Trees and Pigs and Heaven) and I don't think this is one of her best works. There was lots of good, but some of the writing and plotting just held it back for me.
Added Augustown to my audio TBR. Can’t wait to listen!
It was really good. Hope you enjoy it as well.
@ heading to D.C next week to visit my kid and planing to hit Kramers and bus boys & poets. Any other recommendations?

Whoa! That Augustown quote hits deep! Definitely adding to my audiobook tbr.
Right! Just wait until it's in context!
Glad you are enjoying your reads!
Me too.

@@noteworthyfiction oh, I can't wait! 👏
I have only heard good things of Augustown so glad it didnt disappoint. Poignant quote
It was really good and so was the audiobook. I think you'd enjoy it!
Hello! I'm new to this TH-cam channel. Thanks for making this video.
Hello and welcome! Thanks for watching.

I definitely want to see the Frida movie and thanks for the information on the show. Turkey and Ham, the best compromise!

Kei Miller is a fabulous writer and doesn't get enough attention
Based on this book I would agree. I definitely plan on reading more of his work. I don't know how or why this book isn't talked about more.
