  • Icon, mentor, and friend Jack LaLanne died today at the age of 96. He was the father of the modern fitness culture opening his first gym in 1936. His athletic feats were many. At 43, he did 1,000 push-ups in 23-minutes on the show "You Asked for It". If he wasn't telling a joke, he only spoke words of encouragement to acquaintances and strangers alike. I have a signed picture from this interview that has hung in my room since 2002. Jack says in part, "Anything in life is possible, make it happen". Words to live by! God bless you Jack!!

      Hi Rahul,
      I assure you that Jack would love to know that he is still inspiring people like you that are just now discovering him. He was an amazing man. Elaine LaLanne his wife is still going strong at 91 and was just introduced to the "Fitness Hall of Fame". Take his advice and lead a healthy life. You will never regret it! Best wishes, Jeffrey

      This man has been my inspiration since I was a chubby eight year old girl living on guam and his enthusiasum and energy got my sorry self-absobed ass off of the TV and into working out. I started swimming, horseback riding, and Thank You Jack LL and his beautiful wife for their inspiration through my prettty rough childhood years. I thought Wow he's like in his 50's and can do all that... well, I'm nine so YES I can try to do these things. I have done the alcatraz swim, some triathalons, and gearing up to do the bridge to bridge swim in SF . Thank You So Much for my life !!! I would be nothing without Jack's inspiration in the mid-70's . My mom was on foodstamps and my step dad was a loser. Thank YOU and your loving wife for my life.

    He helped me so much in 1972 after I gave birth to my daughter. I was back in shape totally within one year! If not for him I would not know how important exercise really is. I am 69 years old and I work out every day. Thank you Jack! I will miss you.

      Love your story! I miss him too. He always encouraged me to become a vegetarian. I gave up meat in his honor for a month, when he died. After a month, I felt healthier and had lost some weight. So, I've kept it up ever since!

      WeekendExplorer I’ve been a vegetarian vegan since 1980 and got severe onset diabetes at age 55 and it up in the hospital for over a week getting it under control. Dr. Richard Bernstein will tell you how to avoid it...leaving out the protein nearly killed me with all of the high carbohydrate vegetables.

    • @WeekendExplorer
      @WeekendExplorer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ElectedOfficial1 I'm sorry to hear about your protein issue. I really have had no health problems being vegan at home, but I do occasionally have some fish or shrimp mixed in when I travel. This is mostly due to lack of vegan options. I definitely think you need to do your research if you are going to be strictly vegan to make sure that you have a healthy sustainable diet. I somehow have avoided all of the pratfalls that I've heard from other people, mostly through dumb luck I expect.

      +R Paz I was disappointed recently, when Arnold Schwarzenegger tried to hijack history and suggest that it was he who had inspired the health and fitness craze on the Graham Norton show. Jack is really the only person I believe who could have claimed this. But, I never heard Jack suggest that. He knew he was instrumental, but he also knew there were others with him.

    Jack states in this video he began working out at 15 years old. He passed away at 96, and was known to have been performing his daily exercise routine the day before he died. That's 80+ years of consistent training folks. I bet he could count on one hand the days he took for rest.

      he never missed a workout. He was sick with phnemona worked out when he should have been resting. Went to the hospital after he worked out and never came back home. He died the next day. You have to listen to your body, he was proud of the fact that for 80 years he worked out and never missed one workout, but he shouldn't have been working out with phnemona.

    A few years back Men's Health mag compiled a puff piece list of the 100 fittest men of all time. Michael Phelps was their top choice. Jack came in at number four. A travesty, of course. Jack was super-fit for well over half a century, and remained fitter than most adolescents well into his Nineties. His records for pushups and chinups have never, to my knowledge, been repeated, not to mention his boat-towing stunts -- all of them done over the age of forty. No one else comes close.

    In 1961 or so, 7 yr old Tommy was up early watching Saturday morning TV. The cartoons weren’t very good, so I tuned in to Jack Lalanne. Fascinating. He told me that everybody should be up and active! He said that if mom of dad were sleeping in, I should go wake them so they could enjoy the show and work out with him. I did so, Dad just laughed, snorted, and rolled over and returned to his slumber.

    Save and play this video, often. The Man is a Legend. These are powerful words of wisdom in taking care of our body.
    Every time I work out I say a prayer of thanks. My mom made my brothers and I exercise to Jack LaLanne after we made fun of her.
    I always feel better working out to his videos to this day, over 60 years later. That and following his Bragg's diet. No Sugar. Eat Your Vegetables.
    It really is how we can make ". . .make it happen."

I created my first daily workout routine which included jumping jacks and running, as well as (laughably) bean bag target practice. I became a vegan at home in honor of his passing and have always had a primarily plant based diet... much of which I grew in my own garden.
