  • This resource was produced by Manitoba Immigration and Multiculturalism, to create awareness of workplace safety rights and responsibilities among Manitoba newcomers.
The video tells the story of a newcomer who agrees to do a job without receiving proper training. Through one dangerous incident, she learns many important lessons:
    • There are roles and responsibilities for workplace safety and health.
    • A worker has rights -- the right to know about hazards, the right to participate in making work safe and the right to refuse dangerous tasks.
    • There is a procedure to refuse dangerous work and the employer must investigate. A worker has the right to protection from discrimination and harassment. This means that the worker doesn't have to be afraid of losing his or her job.

I've worked in a production plant for 16 yrs. The companies say safety is their #1 concern. That's bs. There #1 concern is productivity, quality then safety. Anything else they say is bs. They don't care about you, you are easily replaced regardless of laws they'll find a way to get rid of you.

Great video which shows that some workers are aware that they are not doing the correct thing but the employer is responsible

My husband had an accident industrial. The co worker involved with my husband's accident created another accident weeks later a chemical fire. Burned himself and blood test came back with alcohol. My husband suffered shoulders and arms injuries. Lower back and forearms 130lbs fell on him from 8ft roughly. Re aggravated his ptsd and anxiety he had it under control. He suffers from nightmares and flashbacks now.

Those safety rules exist here in the US of A too, but most management doesn't care, they want the job done fast, not safe. We also have a lot of immigrants, some who are here illegally, and willing to work under the table for a pittance.

If she had a proper site induction in the first place, she would not had feared telling her line manger the concern of the foot pedal and feared refusing to work on an unsafe machine.
A site induction is an important first step for new starters and the first thing you must go through before you then explain the health and safety policies, risk assessments and method statements for their tasks. All this must be done before they start their new role.

Who put up the yellow caution tape and the red danger tape like that? That is totally confusing and irresponsible. Its one or the other!
