This episode made me realize that people can't see Aang airbending cuz he's literally bending air. We see it as blue visuals but to the characters it's no different than the breeze blowing
Toph was originally supposed to be this loud and big macho dude as opposed to the little blind girl we see here, but Bryke (Mike and Bryan) were eventually convinced by head writer Aaron Ehasz to go with this Toph and it was honestly a fantastic choice in the end! Despite the disability, Toph shows us just how capable and badass she still is and I love her for that. The Boulder was also based on Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) and Bryke intended to invite him to voice the character as well, but due to scheduling conflicts I believe, that wasn't possible. So instead, we got Mick Foley! Also, Toph's earthbending is different from that of Hung Gar (which is the typical style for earthbenders in general). Her style is that of the Southern Praying Mantis, which is a close range style that focuses the arms while keeping leg work to a minimum, using low and short range kicks. Practitioners strengthen the arms and keep them extended in order to reduce the recoil needed to gather energy for the next strike.
@@doubleasworkshop1692 It's not just Aaron Ehasz though. I get that he's head writer and everything but you can't expect me to believe that it was hugely just Aaron that made ATLA a success. There was also the collaboration of many different writers as well. Not to mention the animation team, track team, VAs, consultants, AND Bryke. Aaron may have been head writer, but without all these other passionate people coming together, ATLA wouldn't have been what it is today. Without Bryke, ATLA wouldn't even be a thing. Without Aaron, ATLA wouldn't be as polished. And without everyone else, this show wouldn't come to life. It's all a team effort in the end. I don't think we can just give all the credit to just Bryke or Aaron.

He's the reason we got a mixture of so many different cultures and style in the world and its characters. And I feel like you missed or ignored my last sentence where I stated he kept bryke on a leash. As good as an individual character writer bryke is, he has no sense of progression and development without bringing in some form of character conflict. Korra suffers from it immensely. Korra's spiritualism is never addressed. We never truly learn the philosophy behind airbending or how one masters it. Korra just happens upon it out of desperation, both in the bending match and vs Amon. But we get entire episodes focused on love triangles. We get an entire episode where toph breaks down earth bending for aang and we see what it takes for Aang to master it. That's what you miss out on when Aaron is not there to put Bryke on a leash.

I like how you noticed that her fighting style was different that other Earth Benders. While the 4 bending styles were designed by Sifu Kisu, they brought in another master, Sifu Manny ti design a unique fighting style for Toph. Regular Earth Bending is based on Hung Garr kung fu. Toph's is a form of Praying Mantis style kung fu.
When Aang knew that toph was the right earthebending teacher for him,he remembered what king Bumi said about he needs a teacher who listens and waits. But she's not no any earthebender. King Bumi knows this and that's another reason why he refuses to to teach aang. And in a way this episode showed how she wanted to keep her honor. In a sense losing her very first match not only shows how good she is but shows how angry sh became. That proves that the fighting she does and her skills uplifts her own honor.

Toph's introduction and the way she fits perfectly with everyone just reminds me of how bad ass these characters are, especially the female characters. Toph fights with a closed stance. with her arms and feet close together like mantis style. regular earthbenders fight with a wide stance. so toph looks very smooth when earthbending because she slides her feet on the ground to maintain the stance
When learning from the masters like toph did from the badger moles she can unlock the true meaning of earth bending how most benders are using their bending is just a fraction of what it can truly do only the masters can pull of the full extent

You guys should really tune into the new winter anime, my recommendation is The Promised Neverland, only two episodes in, and as a non-manga reader the unexpected use of tension and mysteriousness is what really brought me to make this my favorite anime of the winter! Please watch this anime! 💖

the thing that annoys me about some of the avatar fanbase is that they ripped korra to shreds for being immature and juvenile and act like aang in book 3 was who he was the entire time. aang and korra maturity is part of each ones growth. neither is perfect. rewatching this its become apparent to me personally that aang needed to grow just as much as she did. it also probably contributed to why katara wasnt interested in him at the start of the series.

@Fire soldier Whether or not Korra is good is subjective to some degree (since the animation is great and the story was so good that it won and got nominated for a lot of awards including an Emmy and an Annie) but the original lore wasn't flipped, that's not subjective. And more people knew the substyles because 70 years had passed since the last show, they can't keep the same 7 characters knowing EVERYTHING while everyone else in that ''world'' stayed the same. Bending is based on kong fu, try to imagine how many people in the world knew about kong fu or had access to learning it 70 years ago, not many, but now you can live in Scandinavia and learn about Chinese martial arts and learn about things that weren't accessible to the general public some decades ago. It makes sense.
Korra suffered because the writers were ambitious and tried something new. The original Avatar tackled one very basic villain. The villain needed no complexity since the focus was on the protagonists. Korra attempted to design villains that are complex and humanized. The chemistry of the main characters suffered. They did not really stick the landing but I did appreciate the sincere attempt. Whenever you try something new, sometimes you fail and that is OK.
The WWE stars references in this episode! The Boulder= the Rock Hippo=Hulk Hogan Fire nation-man, dunno if he's based on a specific WWE star or something, but he is based on the old 90's Wrestling trope that guys with Russian accents, are the bad guys in the narrative and always wears red clothing or a red cape. The Boulder looks neat and lean, and he always speaks of himself at the 3rd person and do lots of theatrics, just like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was doing. The Hippo is big and looks stupid, not unlike Hulk Hogan, he also says Hippo Smash!, wich is also something the Hulk says in the comics, and which WWE wrestler was called Hulk?, thats right, Hulk Hogan...

I always hated that academy it was nothing more than a belt factory. The Boulder is a parody of the rock from wwe. They wanted him to voice the character but he had schedule miscalculations. Hey had mick Foley mankind voice him instead. Toph is one of the few if not the only characters to have a lady name. Katara punked them kids so easy. They said time is an illusion and things are not as they seem. Toph is a great earth bender but plays the weak hand. Reminds me of daredevil her loss of sight enhances her touch she is one with the earth. I always loved this episode cuz I felt it was a parody of royal rumble or wrestlmania or the wwe all together. Aaron Ehasz was a huge reason behind the success of TLA. He literally kept Bryke in check. You can literally feel his absence in legend of korra

I always hated that academy it was nothing more than a belt factory. The Boulder is a parody of the rock from wwe. They wanted him to voice the character but he had schedule miscalculations. Hey had mick Foley mankind voice him instead. Toph is one of the few if not the only characters to have a lady name. Katara punked them kids so easy. They said time is an illusion and things are not as they seem. Toph is a great earth bender but plays the weak hand. Reminds me of daredevil her loss of sight enhances her touch she is one with the earth. I always loved this episode cuz I felt it was a parody of royal rumble or wrestlmania or the wwe all together. That fire nation guy isn’t really fire nation he just a heel character like when sergeant slaughter turned heel and sided with the iron sheik. Toph family is stupid rich and all she wants is freedom. Her running away though just brought more problems.
