I don't normally watch these longer videos, but I actually watched this entire thing and I must say I really enjoyed it. You two are so entertaining and comfortable to watch I didn't even realize how the time was flying as I was watching. Thanks for putting out such a fun and informative video!!!
"Will I never not be hot again" That is August's best description. Love it! And so happy to find a local farmer I can follow with the same weather and bugs. I'll have to make a trip up there this fall.
Enjoyed your content. Another flower farmer here. I took all the Gardener’s Workshop Courses and Lisa Mason Ziegler gave us great sunflower tips. When your sowing in the cell trays, put a minimum of 2 seeds per cell, this allows you to grow double the amount of sunflowers in the same tray. Also it keeps the flower head small for bouquets. Plus sow the same variety in the tray so they’ll germinate at the same time for you. Hope that helps. Wish you continued success!!
Hello from New Zealand! We use something called alstroemeria netting which is made of wire so fully reusable and easy to roll off the beds after the crop is finished. We use a battery-powered hedge trimmer to trim the crop just above the netting before removing it. It is expensive to buy, but so worth it!
I love you guys! I’ve learned quite a bit in just a few videos I’ve watched of yours.. thank you for sharing your knowledge..I’m glad I discovered your channel! ❤
Thank you so much for sharing your top 5 of each!!! I’m in Central Florida…hot hot hot and also have a roadside stand. After June 1st I plant my sunflower seeds directly in the ground because of the transplant issue in the heat. I also find I’m able to plant more in a short period of time by mass direct seeding 🌻 Happy Planting 💐
Laura at Garden Answer just put out a video today where they had Swirsky mites appllied to their garden via drone to combat white flies and thrips. This prevents the need for spraying which kills your bumble bee (male) population and protects teh environment as well. A Win WIN soultion! Give it a listen.
Love your videos and your set up! Can you please make a video on how you set up and started your social media marketing? Would love to learn how you built your following.
😂 y’all crack me up! Thanks for the informative videos!! From an urban/micro (whatever you call growing in your backyard) first year flower farmer in Norman, OK 🎉💐🙌
You guys are just hilarious. 😅And what a great idea to take August off! I hope it's a nice and restful break for your fam. I have never heard of that sunflower head eating pest. How sad! And I feel you on the ProCuts. They actually take about 80 days for me and bloom over 3 weeks! So I think you're right we just need to plant more. I'm also experimenting with other varieties like the Vincent's and Sunrich series. When you are planting on the scale that you are I think direct seeding is key. And the only way to be successful at that is by WAY overplanting. I would experiment a small section and see how it goes. Maybe cover with frost cloth while germinating. The Dirt on Flowers latest podcast talks about a tractor implement for direct seeding sunflowers so maybe look into that? New toy for the hubby? 😅 Sunflower Selections has best seed prices (many people don't know they are the makers of the ProCuts!) and have a bunch more pollen-free varieties as well! You can buy them by the thousands for much cheaper than Johnny's, even Geo's. My best selling sunflower is an heirloom variety from Baker Creek called Double Sunking and vase life is longer than any other variety! Seed is expensive so figuring out how to save it true to type is what I'm working on. My husband and I just had our first farmers market last weekend and it went awesome so we are super thankful for that and also getting ready to open up a drive thru flower shack on our property. More info and tips for social media marketing would be so helpful! It's been encouraging following along while you adapt and grow your business. This was a fun one watching the two of you go back and forth. ☺️ Love that you're in this together and way to go for all of y'alls hard work!
Hi, you two are so funny with your banter, making the flower info fun! Very good content! I have lots of praying mantis in my garden, some lady bugs and I don’t spray anything, my whole backyard is flowers, but I’m just small time. Wondering if praying mantis would help cut down bug pressure, but spray might kill them too? Loved your video!!!
Haha I am so glad you are enjoying watching. Thank you. We try to keep our sprays at a minimum and apply at the correct time to avoid as little good bug loss as possible
Your videos are truly inspirational and I love how organized you are with everything you are doing! You can tell you put a lot of thought into every aspect❤ For marketing or how to market a flower farm like this please what was your process? Did you do Facebook marketplace adds, Instagram, email or collaborations? Just curious because I know this is a big driving factor in any business but also flower farm business. Sincerely a new flower farmer in the making❤❤❤
Thank you so much!! We are going to do a marketing video separately I think to answer a lot of these questions. Try to walk through what I have done that I *think* attributes to our success
Just curious... Your "sawed off" seedlings sound exactly like cutworms - do you have those where you are? They only come out in the dark, so they're hard to notice, but they basically saw off the seedling near ground level. If you come out at night with a headlamp, you can spot them. Farmers all around us lose sometimes 50% of their seedlings this way in the spring. We have a flock of ducks that helps keep the cutworms (and grasshoppers) in our garden under control luckily, so we send the ducks into the beds to root around before planting, and it really helps. In really bad scenarios, people put cutoff dixie cups around each plant to protect them until the plants get larger (the cutworms can only fit their bodies around small stems). Anyway maybe that's not what's happening to you but your description sounded exactly like cutworms!
Here I find they help to get rid of aphids and white flies @@CoramDeoFarm . Ever thought about planting a "trapping" crop around your flower field? For example, marigolds are being used in greenhouses to distract and trap insects away from the crop and then they remove the marigolds and destroy those infected plants. I use nasturtiums a lot in the garden for that 2. There are other plants that do that 2
How do you sell them for so much compared to people just picking some up at Dillons/Walmart. How do you water them-well water or do you have to factor in a water charge? What kind of bugs do you have the most problem with? Do you have bindweed?
Walmart flowers are trash and look terrible comparatively. Once you see and experience local flowers, you can’t compare to grocery stores. Also they last much longer and not covered in harmful pesticides. People also like supporting local businesses over huge corporations. Everything is on drip irrigation. Our bouquets are priced to make us profitable as a business.
You guys are so funny!! So my advice would be instead of pesticides maybe try beneficial bugs.. there should be a insectary near by where you can order predators for all the bad bugs. 😅

Thank you Kelley!
You guys are so hilarious. I'm glad that you can laugh about your struggles already.
Haha thank you Teresa!
Thank you for all your hard work--I learn so much from your videos and you make it look like so much fun!
Thank you so much!
Best take away for me "you have to grow your customers". Thank you for all your thoughts!

You’re welcome! That’s awesome! I wish we could direct sow but our bug pressure and soil doesn’t support it
Also central FL👋 when are your suns ready for harvest? What are your secondaries that stand the oppressive heat and monsoons of summer?

Wow flower farm heros ... victory over mother nature!!! Congrats!
Love what you are doing!!! Proud of your hard work! 🙌🙏😃
Thank you Gayle!
I really enjoyed your style of video, very honest and naturally funny. ❤😊

Yes! Definitely on our list of videos to make in the off season ☺️
I just discovered your channel (I saw you on the flower farmers fb group!) and I'm really enjoying your youtube videos so far! Thanks!
Thank you!! 😊
I'm actually going to try doing this next year no idea what I'm doing but going for it

What was your final opinion for the year regarding flower netting? Will you be using it in 2024? If not what will you use? Thanks from a beginner.
We will corral the zinnias again, not net

Love your videos.
Im new to making my own videos. Is there a program you use for editing? Thats where i suffer and struggle the most.
We use FinalCut Pro ☺️
@@CoramDeoFarm thank you. I will check it out
Did you plant the marigolds next to the Xenia's? Because they repel bugs. I use them for that reason in my veggie plot.
Yes they are planted next to them but I don’t find that they help me too much with bugs that love my flowers. I wish!

thank you! Unfortunately I don’t think our bug pressure can be handled entirely that way at a commercial level
Are there any flowers you are starting by seed right now?
Nope but I will do a video in August of everything we plan to grow
Do you plant hydrangea? It's peoples " favourite
nope!
