Taking apart a Nissan Leaf EV battery

- I got my hands on a used Nissan Leaf 24 kWh battery pack that I intend to use for energy storage. How hard can it be to take it apart? I actually thought it would be easier!

Got three Nissan 24kWh packs, bought the individual modules from a company that resells EV batteries. Put them in 14S and use a Batrium WM5 Bms, its now running for nearly 3 years. Next project is a HV EV battery which does not need to be disassembled
The unknown central module is the Battery Heater Control. See: 1:13:45 The website below also gives a thorough explanation of the Nissan Leaf battery pack. It is offered by an instructor at Weber State University. The total length of the video is slightly under 2 hours.

Nice, i currently suck 400a from my 24kwh leaf with an upgraded inverter. For a year i have daily belted it do and from work , constant repeated 400a for 5 seconds usually. 0-60 Mph in 6.3 tested on draggy , makes for a fun leaf. We will see when the cells decide to call it a day.

When disassembled, there were 2 heating plates on top of the rear batteries as well as heating plates on the sides of the central batteries. Are heating plates also used on the front batteries? Thanks in advance for the response.
Am i right to assume since each module is 2s2p what the middle contact of each module is for balancing? If you measure the volage across the middle contact is it half of the modules voltage?
Wow such a good video very easy to follow along. This is a perfect example of renewable energy. Just because it is no longer working for the EV it can have a second life as solar energy storage. Most of these batteries are literally being given away. You can easily build a 10kw power wall for pennies. The future will thank you.
For what its worth, thats not a repair, they come from the factory like that :)

Checking voltage won’t get you far. You need to check capacity which is a daunting and lengthy process.

No they was all the same. Same modules/ cells.

Thanks and yes it is working fine. I ended up using 9 of the modules for that. But since I “only” have 250w and limited sun here I’ve so far passed about 130 kWh through them. (I have a Victron MPPT that tracks this).

It was a fun scooter but I sold it after making these vids, so unfortunately I don’t have any more plans for that at the moment.
What kind of BMS do you want to use ?

Thanks Allan! I actually got a 6s Mesa BMS from eBay, Germany. They had one with ~45A discharge and about half of that for charging. It was about impossible to find a 6s with Bluetooth so I went with this one without.
But the low voltage cut out is TOO low, so I have a Victron BP 100 to protect from that.
I think I recorded almost the entire “build” of this battery, so eventually I’ll edit that.

As of right now I’ve put about 28 kWh through that bms and it seems to still work good. My battery pack is 3,3 kWh so a few cycles.

So you know how much current these cells can discharge? Like what's the max? Also, what configuration was the lead pack in?
All I remember is that they are more limited in Amp draw compared to the cells in the BMW i3.
The modules are 48s1p. But every modules internal cells are 2s2p. So that should be 96s2p on the total cell count. Cells go to ~4.15 volt (398v).
I believe my modules had about 370Wh of remaining capacity.
But it was a long time ago I did that disassembly/ study.
