I drive the straddle carriers that move the containers on and off your lorrys. I found it really interesting and helpful seeing things from your point of view.
I found this video whilst trying to explain to a new driver how to do containers. I got my license just before coving so I had no training at all. I wish I'd seen this when I first started! Only other thing I would add is that at the back of the trailer is a bar that should be extended when carrying 45 foot containers. I thank you very much for the video
Yes, the 45 has the locks in the same position like a 40 but the 45 container extends 2.5“ past the locks obviously. This means it pokes out at the end. To ensure the whole vehicle now is not too long, the container is moved forward a bit to be within the length limit. Fun fact there are 45 container with rounded ends to make sure you the tractor doesn’t hit the container in sharp bends.
No it doesn't. You shrink the trailer to pin 3 marked yellow for a 45 and then use the front twist locks marked yellow.. YOU DO NOT USE 40 POSITIONING 4 ON A 45. You use position 3.
Thanks Can I just add that when you go to collect your 45' foot container - even after you have correctly set up your skelly trailer - do make sure the when the crane is overhead lowering your container onto your skelly, make sure you aim your lorry (shunt) for the right holes because the chances are you have been used to loading 40 footers and it's easy to expect the 45 to slot onto the same twist locks which it doesn't.....
thank you very much new driver here possibly going to get container work so thought i would familiarise with them this video is brilliant than you so much
Raul, thanks you, that was very informative. Hey, I bet the guy who tells all new drivers to go 2nd left at the docks is having a laugh, especially when people mention it on TH-cam! LOL
Got my test on Monday and giving containers some serious consideration as a first job if all goes well. These videos are immensely helpful! You've also convinced me in another video that agency might be the best way for me to go instead of staying in my current company which would be supermarket work and involve tipping pallets and cages all day myself. Could you recommend any agencies that do container work around Liverpool? Only if you're allowed, of course. I'm also considering Evri and Amazon. Been watching a few others that do those, it seems good too. Long days tho. I won't mind doing the longer days as long as I can get around 30-48 hours, 3-4 days per week. That's ideal for me. 4 on 4 off also sounds good. Glad to see you're often around my part of the world. Hopefully see you out there soon!
Weird that I’m watching your video this morning where you do Eldapoint and then on to Seaforth dock because this morning I’m about to do it in reverse. I’m lifting off at Seaforth and then lifting on on at Eldapoint. Good video for anyone wondering how containers work. 👍
Great video, thanks! Very insightful! By the way, I have noticed a MASSIVE improvement in your confidence and communication ability in comparison to some of your older videos. Really well done!
Hi Raul. Thanks for your videos about how to do things with containers. I have just started on them this week and if it wasn't for your videos. I wouldn't of known what to do. Cheers mate
Great question. Before you go in the docks your transport office must provide the booking number, container number and SIZE, aswell the receivers name and address. Customs can pull you in for checks right after you go out of the docks and you need all this information for them
No you never do handball at all on containers. Driver never touches the stuff. But yes there are jobs where it takes 8h for them to unload. Easiest job ever.
I heard that at least in London area if one uses the 40f inner front twist lock for the 45f box and vosa-nostra catches it one could be fined like it's an infringement or so. If that is a legend or not , I'd rather not gamble. So I learned the same thing, position 3 and outer twist lock in the front for the 45f box. Some trailers have a bumper extension, which legend also says it could welcome a fine if caught when extended but hauling a smaller box.

Hi pal. I don't know how you do it now, i got mine i think 3 years ago and it was £45 something like that. I think you can get it first time you go in the docks or maybe online now. Cheers
Hi Raul great video, I really like container videos for some reason. Do you think there is good money to be made as an owner driver on containers? If I had my own Operators License and had my transport managers qualification. Thinking £16k to 20k to buy a unit with around 350K miles on it (Range T, Actros, XF etc). Hire a skelly trailer for £100ish a week. I have looked a lot online and it's mixed comments, the ones that are negative seem to be owner operators so putting a payed driver in the truck and they don't actually own it as it's on lease! I reckon if a genuine owner driver who owns the unit and drives it it may be worthwhile? Interested to know your thoughts as you have run your own trucks before I gather.
Hi pal. To be honest i don't think it's worth to have just 1 unit. But it's a good place to start. I'm sure in notime you will be having 4 or 5. Sure there is good money. But at the beginning you will be running around like crazy to get things going. Been there done that. Now i just have other plans for the future 👍👍👍
@@Raul689 Thanks for the reply Raul 👍. It would be just one truck and me driving it, I couldn't be doing with the bother of finding and managing employees, not looking to make a fortune either just a reasonable living and a bit of independence. I'm currently an owner driver courier in a LWB van and often tramp Monday to Friday, a truck would be a more comfortable option. I'm just not sure there is the financial reward to justify the time and expense to upgrade to a 44t owner driver. Cheers again.
Hi Raul,i am 70 yrs old i am from Liverpool L.F.C fan , OK no crap from you Mancs or Cockneys 😁.I have worked out of Seaforth/Felixtowe ports back in 1975 to can't remember no i don't have dementure i still got my class 1 H.G.V licence YEA 😜.Unfortunatley disclamers are needed not because of you'r knowlege but because of the minority of dickheads out there that can't understand commonsense.YOU matey amongst a few other H.G.V driver youtubers are the best info drivers i have ever come across ,and at my age and experience of driving and still can do the job i think i can say to all newbies this man Raul is spot-on with knowledge.👌
even after 13 years of driving these road hogs , companies still say 'do you have experience in containers'? ,, like it some sort mystery it cant be learned in a few hours 👀
That increased my container-knowledge by 600%!
I think Raul IS a teacher!

Haven't done containers for a few years
Thanks for the refresher. It all came back thanks to this video.
Never knew there was so much to containers! Assumed they just got dumped on and taken off. Very interesting and well explained thx.
Returning to trucking after a few years. Very helpful videos. Thank you. And you’re a good man too. Bonus.
Very useful information and very good explanation. Thank you

Great explanation. I drove truck for 10 years. 6 on tankers and 4 on general haulage. I never did containers and have never used a twist lock.
Thanks. Yes quite a simple rudimental lock for such weights but it's just gravity doing all the work 😁
Excellent patient explaining, 👍, and that's from a former DRIVING INSTRUCTOR 😉
Awesome! I came here to learn about containers as a stacker operator but this gave me more respect for truck operators
Thank you!
Thank you with your help i will now be able to work with containers.
Raul, you are a great teacher!!
Glad you think so!

@@a320nick thx Nick
Thank you very good vlog
like ur truck and video very good rory Ireland 🇮🇪
Good video mate very informative, cheers
So you have to have it in position 3 for 45 foot. Position 3 for single 20 foot. Position 4 for 40 foot.
Yes correct thanks
Perfect, 👍👌👌👌👌
👍👍👍
Hallo from Latvia! I do the same job from Riga port. You have very nice channel, and I subscribed to it.
Awesome, thank you!
Another good vlog mate👍👍👍
Excellent video Raul on container Demonstration and keep up the good work 💯 that you are doing 😊
Thank you!
Great, how do you know the length of your container that you are picking up from the docks??
Great question. Before you go in the docks your transport office must provide the booking number, container number and SIZE, aswell the receivers name and address. Customs can pull you in for checks right after you go out of the docks and you need all this information for them
Scania, feeling the power in that beast 💥💥💥😂😂😂
Thanks for the tips, was stranded on how to load a 45 feet cargo 🚀
thanks mate that's great, do you like container work ?
Yes mate verry much 👍👍
Brilliant tutorial. Always wondered how these work. Do u get much handballing work with containers?
No you never do handball at all on containers. Driver never touches the stuff. But yes there are jobs where it takes 8h for them to unload. Easiest job ever.
Great vlog mate as always........stay safe
I was wonder if shadowing day or half would be possible to see in practice how job should be done ?
Thank you for that

Yes the question below how do you know the length of the trailer great video thanks

@@Raul689 thanks very interesting
Thought you streched the back trailer crash bar when carrying the 45 ft .Did a week on containers nice refresher.
You are right you have to stratch the back underrun bar
If you are dropping a box at the port and collecting another, do you have to re weigh after dropping first one off and before you collect the next ?
No. All the boxes are weighted on entry only. From there they will know the total weight on your way out
Quick question why do you pull away before putting twist locks into locking position after having container loaded ??
It's not allowed to go in to the crane area. So you have to pull out and then go do the twist locks.
@@Raul689 Thanks for reply stay safe buddy
Was that eldapoint in Kirkby where you got the box taken off
Good one learnt a lot
Glad to hear that
Hi Raul' great video mate, just one quick question, how do you go about getting your hands on a site card for the dock.
Hi pal. I don't know how you do it now, i got mine i think 3 years ago and it was £45 something like that. I think you can get it first time you go in the docks or maybe online now. Cheers
You press no card at where he swiped his card and they will tell you to go to the office with your license and the fee
Thank you lad
can hauling at at it's best my grandpa used to pull container
Brilliant 👍
Wish I could get a start on boxes, I'd move to my brothers in Liverpool, then hope you'd take me on for training Boss Man 👍👍
Absolutely 😄 nice and easy work

SAFE ROAD!
Brilliant videos, keep them coming 👍
Thanks, will do!
In north America there ar 53ft boxs
Nice
I have never understood why you cant run laden with the trailer shortened?? it takes up less room on the road and is easier to get round corners!
So if I load a 40FT i load on pin4 but for a 45FT I load on pin3?
Am I wrong thanks guys
