  • I spent three incredible days travelling across North Stradbroke Island and visiting so many beautiful places the island has to offer. Such friendly, generous locals!

Never forget the sound of curlews. As a kid remote camping in far North Queensland with the parents and hearing that sound in the middle of the night was the stuff of nightmares 😅

indeed was car camping by Musgrave park, fire works and curlews sounded like shooting people as in frontier wars , spooked me indeed until I realised, same with male possums and peacocks

Lovely to see the Sea Shanties. We stayed there many times in the 2000's when our kids were little. (and before the cabins were renovated). One of the magical things about it was every night two wild dolphins would arrive and play in the lights off the little jetty there. The lights attracted the bugs, the bugs attracted the fish and the fish attracted the dolphins. Every night they would visit each jetty along that shore line.. it was really special.

@WalkaboutWithRob Thanks Rob, I enjoyed this! Bought back some nice memories of when I used to stay at Straddie regularly. Swam at both brown and blue lakes, and almost got stuck when trying to use a normal car to travel further up the sandy drive (I aborted the operation!). In case no one's commented before; those weird looking birds are called Curlews; they make the most eerie calls during the night!

A nice trip back to Straddie for me. My mates and I camped in the scrub on Cylinder Beach for a week back in 1972 for a surfing holiday. Point Lookout was a very small settlement back then and the camp ground was right on the headland overlooking Main Beach, which is where we camped in 1973. I haven't been back since, so this was a great look around, thanks.

In the seventies we would catch the ferry, then hitch to point lookout, and camp at either cylinder or deadmans and surf for days on end. It was very quiet and unspoilt.

OK.. my father is a keyboard player Brisbane with first Broken Souls..playing in Mod Style underground venues in the Valley ...CloudLand.. and The Underground + Lennon's Hotel Queen St ..site where he and best friends were permanently based as house band ...top floor Hibiscus Room..for 8 yrs ( great gig ) .. Cozy & Young.
Now on the night of Festival Hall Show the Lads arrived after sunset... my mother was with child...and heartbroken as the Beatles were her favourite.. ( bewildered musician father was surprised that mother wasn't father's biggest fan.) Dad not a Beatles fan at all.
He played a gig in the valley finishes midnight..crowd numbers low due to ...the visiting band.
As he had friend who managed the bar at the Park Royal Alice St City..he drove his car to Park Royal and parked in secret spot around the side of the Hotel ( at that time no linen service trucks come) ... my dad ..!!.. Now after a Crown Lager..poured to glass ( fancy Hotel ).. he's couple of people asking may they have a cigarette of his. One fella with a quite voice the accent was so strong that he made a rude joke....my dad.. !!!
The fella was wanted Benson & Hedges Gold... cause he can't GET ANY.. nah dad said machine past the lifts..next mens toilet..has them. A young woman also join with same accent and she also want one ! In the pocket they go. They talk..the girl leaves..the fella introduced as Harry..but it's really George. No idea enters dad head... but dad reveals he's a musso..Keyboards his choice..the fella also says he plays for a living. The 2 bounce of Artists that mold their music choice. My dad Chick Korea and impressed his new friend and asked more serious musso talk.. I was brought up in this world...and it can unbelievably boring. Dad manager friend was keeping hiss distance..but nudgings from him to dad.. " come here Julian...." dad eventually goes all the way the bloody bar...free Crown for effect..and you summoned? That's George Harrison. .. the Beatles ( guitar player). " I know we are chatting about music now. " Julian he's in the band.. did he say?
No...he probably won't the story is that they are up at Ĺennons. They are here at ParkRoyal.. shhhhhn. Oh that's why he wanted my smokes.. George came to bar sat down..scored #2 more cigarette.. had a Crown with dad..made some moves back upstairs..nice to have B and H friends. And he gone. Dad will eventually come back home..the morning birds and the car..!
Wakes morning sick mother...fills her in on his night.
For 1 month mum did not speak to my dad !
    A very true story.

Man, so happy you decided to do that extra Dakebin track. There are many cabins I guess like where you were staying but my high school buddie had an establishment, well her Dad did and it was a haven for freedom loving 15 years olds who stayed over school holidays without overbearing adults around. Indeed my bestie returned there with my high school uniform to celebrate a wedding anniversary and I never got said uniform back. There I said it .. wtf. I digress, cool video Rob. Deja vu, i follow it intently. How could one not.

I remember sitting on that beach south of point lookout watching soldiers crawl up the beach as machine guns fired live rounds over their heads. My unit had our APC s arranged in the scrub a few yards inland. Mine had carried a field kitchen ashore, next to us were the medics getting body bags ready for expected casualties. News helicopters were told they would be shot down if they entered that air space. It has been over forty years so the official secrets act has expired. Thats how close we came to war with Indonesia over Timor.
