I left England for Canada in 1957. When I was of working age, if you got laid off, company closed, fired etc. we were given one year maximum of unemployment insurance (UI) where we had to regularly report in at the UI Office all the places that we went to, to look for work. When the one year was up, the unemployment insurance stopped at which point you ended up on welfare which was a much lower pay than UI. However, rent was still required to be paid, groceries etc. There were few people living on the street in the 80's compared to today. These people are on welfare or benefits for years on end and this only exasperates the situation as companies that are hiring want people with experience for that particular job otherwise, they may get hired at a lower pay rate sweeping the floors.

No, Mike. Most of the CAB do not get paid. I know because I used to work for them, for nothing, when I couldn't get a paid job.

I suffer with Migrains a lot, got Hospital checks etc. The doctors say heritary and the most horrible part is I can get them so bad it prevents me from working some days and it annoys the management over this and I lost jobs, especially the ones I tried and like doing. to relise the hospital messed up and I should of been on medication that they failed to provide. But is says that it can make me drowsey and not operate machinery. Though I'm looking for work from home or similar. It comes from my family side who are epilepsy and suffer aswell

Some people simply cant work either mentally or physically, and it really winds me up when people who seem to have never suffered serious depression think that people can just jump out of bed, smile on their faces, and do an 8hr shift, which is impossible for some people, so get your head out of your rear end and empathy for those people who are really suffering!

No depression between 1939-45 then? The munitions factories seemed to keep going at a rate.

I am a full time carer for my father and as such must be on call 24/7 365. Nothing would please me more than to get back to work I spend a couple hours a day doing essential things for my father and the rest of the time is pretty much my own, still on call 24/7. If I go to work get a full time job I will be at least £250 a month worse off per month and that is not affordable and there is no incentive to do it. The system is lazy, fix the system and people like me will happily return to work.

Tonlia quoted people being paid £3.50 a delivery with the minimum wage, which would be fair enough if they only made 1 delivery a day, which is absurd. In London, and other urban areas, these pests buzzing around on motor scooters and e-bikes carry out dozens of deliveries a day, and earn far in excess of the minimum wage.
